A list of puns related to "Backwater (song)"
I apologize for the length of this in advance. This happened some years ago but still seems relevant today so I thought I would share the story.
So back in the 90βs I was working for a European based financial firm. U.S. offices were managed by Europeans with a regional head office in New York. Younger employees were generally underpaid/overworked as in your first few years out of college the promised reward was being promoted to a Director position where the salary, perks and bonus structure would really kick in (kind of like how law firms promote their younger lawyers to partners after a long wait). As junior associates, the only good news was that we received the same five weeks of vacation per year (plus a few weeks of sick leave) as our European counterparts, which for me meant a lot of camping and stay-cations during the summer since I didnβt really make enough to travel to exotic/expensive locations.
The offices were set up in a way where the business development (βBDβ) Directors each had a junior associate. The BD guys would generally network, schmooze and travel around their territories to meet clients and new prospects. Once back in the office, the BD guys would dump their meeting notes on the desks of their junior associates to follow up and land the business, aka a βhunter/skinnerβ model. As a junior associate, I was pretty busy assisting a BD so I routinely rolled over at least two weeks of vacation every year. I had worked at the firm for three years and was starting to get antsy for a promotion. Right after Thanksgiving, my boss in the West Coast office told me that I was being transferred and promoted to the Southeast office come the new year.
I really had no interest in working in/living in the Southeast, but I wanted to advance my career. I rolled over my usual two weeks of vacation into the next year, so I was eligible for seven weeks of vacation that next year. After celebrating New Yearβs with my family in CA, I packed up my car and drove across the country. Once in the new office, I settled in and met my new boss, who promptly informed me that he wasnβt actually promoting me to Director though I was being given the responsibilities of the role as he judged me to be βtoo youngβ but was also told that if I demonstrated that I could do the job, I would be promoted next year. I was pissed but didnβt have a choice other than moving back home and starting from scratch so I agreed to it. I disliked my new boss instantly as co-workers to

It's clear that based on just about any modern metric the British Wizarding world is a disaster. The criminal justice system uses torture, the political system is corrupt and incompetent, the educational system is horrendous, the economy makes no sense at all. Everyone local thinks Hogwarts is the best school on the planet when it's clearly a horrendous school with an incompetent headmaster.
Are there any fics that take an outsiders view of Wizarding Britain during the 1970s-1990s where everyone else on earth knows how wacko the place is?
I think there are some people already on the steam version wondering how to get the XBox exclusive Saarkir Backwaters dragon:
In-game you have to go to the settings and there is a tab called 'Cross-Platform'. Here you have to activate it and set a password. You will receive a Century-ID, note it down. Then you have to re-download the game through XBox App and start it. It will ask you if you are a new player and you have to say no and enter your Century-ID and password.I had to retry that several times as the game kept telling me I'm already logged in.Once you are on the menu, you will find the announcement in the news banner. Click on it and click claim and you should be good to go.
You can also link your XBox account to your Steam account in the XBox app, but this is misleading and I think it is unnecessary.
Just curious about what your top nations are and what are the least powerful ones. Whether they are kingdoms, empires, superpowers or galactic federations. What makes one powerful? What makes one not so? Iβll share my examples but they are still underdeveloped.
Lore context: A Dark Angels naval patrol meandered through a region of space and this particular star system popped up on the charts.
Meta context 1: people ask variations of the question 'what is life like away from the frontlines' all the time
> βAnything on the system from our records?β asked Sammael, looking at Malcifer who had been tasked with the investigation.
> βNothing remarkable,β said the Chaplain. βThe system is on our star charts, about fifty light years from our current position.[---]One inhabited world, Thyestes Five. Last Administratum census was a little more than seven hundred years ago.
> Population between three and three-and-a-half billion. Self-sustaining agriculture and industry, widespread settlement across two main landmasses. Normal tithes rate, met more or less on target for previous seventeen hundred years. Imperium-standard technology level, Planetary defence force called the Thyestes Provosts. Three Imperial Guard regiments raised there about fifteen hundred years ago, no longer active. Last threat, ork attacks nearly two thousand years ago.β
> βNo priority supplies to strategic worlds?β asked Seraphiel.
> βNone. Utterly unremarkable, as I said.β
> βAlmost a backwater, one might say,β said Sammael.
>
TLDR: A planet that hasn't been attacked for almost two thousand years, with self-sustaining industries, a population of 3 billion to 3.5 billion, and last sent troops off-world 1500 years ago, 'only' qualifies as "almost a backwater".

Title pretty much says it all. My family is currently in Colorado, but with the bad air, very short growing season, crazy land and real estate prices, and complete lack of greenery for the most part, we're looking for literal and figurative greener pastures. We want at least 2 acres (my husband would prefer 30-40. We like solitude.), but no more costly than $600 - $700k. Preferably much less, and ideally near-ish a military base.
So far we're thinking North Carolina (Fayetteville, Asheville Charlotte/ Durham/ Raleigh), Georgia (anywhere but south of Atlanta, except maybe Augusta), and South Carolina (no specific places in mind yet), which I know doesn't fit the moderate to liberal political hopes, but as long as I avoid the topic I can keep my mouth shut and deal with differing political views.
I'm hoping that maybe one of you fine people will know where we should be looking. Specific cities or general counties would be very appreciated!
Iβve been recommended this website to shop for tarantulas due to their cheapish prices, are they reputable? If not, any vendors youβd recommend?
Saw that this RPG got kickstarted. Has anyone played it? Any thoughts on the system? It seems cool, but there isn't much discussion I can find about it.
This is purely anecdotal, and I've not been to a live show since pre-covid, but when I've seen small-to-mid-sized bands announcing tour dates recently, there's usually a Chicago show, maybe a Detroit stop, but a Grand Rapids performance is far less frequent. Soccer Mommy and Peach Pit are just a couple of acts that spring to mind.
I felt in recent years that a show in GR was becoming a staple for bands of a certain size crossing the Midwest thanks to our amazing smaller venues (Pyramid Scheme, Stache, Tip Top, etc.) I hope that's still the case and this is just a blip (or misconception on my part).
I've always felt these two universes would fit right into 40k lore.
For Dune, the Navigators in both lores seem very similar, and the rival houses in Dune remind me of Hive guilds and houses and the overall monarchical/feudal feel of some 40k planets. Lastly, the emphasis on melee combat for mainline troops in a sci-fi setting always reminded me of 40k.
Thief, with it's grimdark, gearpunk setting feels like it only needs some aquilae and a few servitors to be a 40k game. Also the Builders' hammer symbology reminds me of Fantasy's Sigmarites.
Am I crazy or does anybody else get what I'm thinking here? What other series do you think could easily belong in the 40k universe?
I'm having some plumbing work done to replace some clay pipe that has had tree root intrusion and the plumber suggested installing a backwater valve. The city would reimburse me for the cost too. We haven't had any flooding issues and our house is raised but never say never. I'm more concerned about the valve closing sometime whether when it's supposed to or due to malfunction and then having sewage/water backup into the floor drains in the basement. How would I know when it's closed? Do I need to check it during every heavy rainfall? Thank you in advance.
EDIT: To be clear, this article, for example, talks about the concern I have: "This βself floodingβ is caused when the flap of the backwater valve closes during a rain event, trapping water from the foundation drain behindΒ β or βupstreamβ β of the valve (keep in mind that while the flap in the valve is closed, the floor drains and weeping tiles in behind the backwater valve are being filled with water from connected downspouts and from showers, dishwashers, etc). This trapped water will have no place to go and, if there is enough of it, it will enter the homeβs basement via floor drains or below grade fixtures like sinks, toilets, showers, washing machines and the like."
i have just read pharos ans my ass is full of questions, why was the demon so afraid of the pharos? what was at the bottom of mount pharos that made little kell and his men so uneasy? was awaking the tyranids lost in the intergalactic void a bug or a feature? and why did the writer think it would be nice to make the death of the masked one such a "hero of the imperium" deal if he was going to make him also bring the tyranids upon the galaxy? i need answers and a clue as to what HH book read next
