A list of puns related to "Back to Front (Gilbert O'Sullivan album)"
Examples include Ko-Ko being engaged to his ward Yum-Yum at the start of The Mikado and the Lord Chancellor almost marrying his ward Phyllis in Iolanthe. In neither case does there seem to be any objection to their getting married other than that the man is not the romantic lead. An inversion happens in The Pirates of Penzance with Frederic nearly getting engaged to his nurse Ruth, yet the age difference between them is here accepted as comical, and in any case Ruth would not have had guardian status.
So just the other day I caught an excellent community theater production of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, and just a few minutes into the first act, I realized with delight that I was watching a modern Savoy opera. The score was maybe not up to the same level as Arthur Sullivan, and the style was very much its own thing, and more in line with modern musicals than Victorian comic opera, but the spirit was all there. There was an old maid singing out the back story, there were ancestral portraits coming to life, there were patter songs, and wonderfully witty lyrics, and amazing multipart harmonies. I can't stop listening to "Poison in my Pocket".
I'm curious what other modern musicals people would recommend that might scratch that G&S itch of mine.
Thanks in advance :-)
Hi everyone!
I want to audition for a community production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury and am wondering if anyone here has some audition song recommendations?
I'm a mezzo and require a comedic, English, song in the style of G&S.
Thank you!!
