A list of puns related to "BWRX 300"
Hello everyone,
Almost a year ago I posted a comparison of the Thorcon SMR power plant vs the equivalent renewables.
Now it's time for V2, this time against the BWRX-300, a more conservative reactor choice, and because why not, I've made it in GIF format!
For the purpose of the comparison, the renewables are sited in almost ideal conditions, solar having a C.F of 25%(California is 28.4%), and offshore wind being 63%(GE's number), despite the best offshore wind farms in the UK only being at 50%.
The solar panels are assumed to have an efficiency of 20%, a cell coverage of ~75%, and a mass of 20kg/250W. The comparison is per MW(adjusted for C.F), not accounting for the lifespans and degradation. The giant stack of panels assumes they are each 4cm thick, and only contains the panels themselves, not any of the mounting hardware, foundations etc. The 8km^2 is solid panels. A real solar farm would be at least twice the area, and the gaps would increase at higher latitudes with greater panel angles.
Fuel use is based off of 50MWd/kgU @ 900MWth = 6.57t/yr = 394t/60yrs = ~500t pellets.
I've ignored the potential for the BWRX-300 to be boosted up to 30%(390MW) with Lightbridge metallic fuel, as well as storage/backup requirements for the renewables.
EDIT: Just realized that two of the turbines are missing, so only 30 are in the gif.
My intention is to show the differences in scale caused by the low power density of renewables, and thus illustrate a case for why SMRs have so much potential if the mass production and modularization that have made renewables cheap can be replicated by the nuclear sector.
I've read in a couple of places that GE Hitachi's BWRX-300 "Eliminates LOCA" and therefore simplifies a lot of safety stuff.
But I could not understand from their materials how the LOCA is supposed the be made impossible / implausible. Can someone explain?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!

Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
