I'll say this from the get-go, I wasn't exactly clamoring for a new Kurt Vile album. His last album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze came out about 2 years ago, and there was still plenty to digest. But Vile is very much a songwriter in the '70s vein, and artists during that time usually did release an album every 1.5-2 years, so he definitely is following in the footsteps of his influences.
I love the leadoff track. "Pretty Pimpin'" has a wonderful unassuming vibe, and has a great, relateable storyline - where after years of parenthood and/or job/life experiences, you look in the mirror for a brief second and wonder who the hell is looking back at you.
There's some great new instrumentation on this new one. The biggest new instrumentation going on (though I'm pretty sure he's played it before in some capacity) is the banjo.
So...why is this not hitting me? It may be because each time I've listened to it, it's been in an environment where I'm easily distracted - be it work, or on the road, or at home (juggling 3-4 tasks). The reviews have all been stellar, but I keep thinking "this is another Kurt Vile record."
The biggest drawback is the album's relative lack of hooks. Smoke Rings For May Halo may have had its share of misses, but that album's hits - you just couldn't get out of your head. This one is more like a late-night grower. In interviews, he even said he recorded this album later at night after his wife and kids went to bed. And being a situational listener, I tend to want to set a specific environment for a certain type of album, e.g. listening to 'late night' albums at around 2 in the morning.
Does this album have enough to keep you curious and coming back? Yes. But for many people, if they think "this is another Kurt Vile album" - there's not going to be much incentive to get them back on a second or third listen.
It's by no means bad. And if you're just learning about Kurt Vile from The War on Drugs, this is an excellent place to start. However, for those who have several Vile albums in their collection, I fear this one has the danger of getting lost in the shuffle of all the other great music out there.

Could anybody direct me to a tab or able to sound out the little guitar riff from I'm Goin Down?
It borrows from This Time for Africa / Waka Waka and matches the melody of the singing in the chorus, but online I can only find the chords for the song and the actual guitar solo.
