Why did grappling martial arts seem to predominate in West, South, and Central Asia; while striking martial arts seem to predominate in East and Southeast Asia?

Hello all,

I noticed that wrestling (of all variations) is the "primary" traditional martial art practiced in the Turco-Persian sphere of influence in Western and Central Asia as well as South Asia with literally countless styles of "native" wrestling in addition to modern greco-roman or freestyle; however there appear to be no "native" striking martial arts with your only choices being European-style boxing or some form of a striking martial art from East Asia.

It also appears to me that the opposite is true for East Asia, where there does not seem to be the same native grappling tradition with the focus instead being on striking martial arts like Muay Thai, Sanda, Lethwei, Tae Kwon Do, etc.

Is there any known historical cause or famous text that may explain this "schism" this that we know of? Or is it down to "that's just how it is"?

Thanks in advance !

How did the art of carpet weaving develop - did it originate in one place or many places separately? Why do carpets play such an important cultural and economic role throughout Central Asia and the Middle East?

I’ve travelled a fair bit through Central Asia and the Middle East (and parts of North Africa) and am always interested to see the different styles of carpets. Two things that always seem common though are (1) that they appear to be a highly sought after item (and I’m never sure if this is due for functional or status/cultural reasons) and (2) it also seems like carpets/rugs are seen as a good method of storing wealth, I assume because they are always tradeable/sellable and in many cases increase in value in time. I am interested to understand how this developed and whether it was coordinated eg through Ottoman influence or arose more organically in different places.

For people living in South-east Asia, VIU just uploaded eng subs of Amazing Saturday

I guess this means we will be getting professionally subbed episodes of Amazing Saturday (with a pretty fast turnaround time too, posting just one day after the Korean episode).

Not sure how this will affect Dareumi though, I am deeply appreciative of their efforts for many years now but I suppose they can focus on Idol Dictation Contest and past episodes now.

TIFU by getting myself shipwrecked off the coast of an island in South East Asia

This happened this afternoon. I’m a foreigner living in the Philippines, been here about a year and a bunch of neighbors invited me to go fishing with them. Turns out by fishing they meant drinking and barbecuing at the beach, which was awesome anyway.

Now don’t imagine a fancy resort or anything, it’s pretty close to where I live but it’s just a really small little village on the beach, little wooden shacks and fisherman and many little boats, people drying out seaweed in front of their houses etc.

We drink all day, from 10am till about 4pm. At some point, around 4ish, one of the local village dudes who had joined us tells us he has a small net out in the water and he wants to go pull it up.

Of course he asks the β€œAmerikano” if I want to do it, because I thought we were going fishing, anyway I’m like fuck yeah bro

Now there’s another dude with us, one of my neighbors who also wants to go get the net, and β€˜coz we’re buddies and his English is pretty good we decide to go together.

Neither of us have done this before, but the waters here are super chilled, it’s like waist high water with no waves, you can literally go like 300 feet out and the water is only chest high at most.

So off we go, we’re looking for a set of blue bouys. We have one scrappy oar and TINY LITTLE BOAT, dude this thing is like 8 foot long, 2 foot wide at the widest point, we’re only bringing it to the put the net and fish inside.

We get about 400 feet out, we’re fuckin’ pushing the boat, wading in water when my buddy mentions to me that he actually can’t swim, water is getting a little deep (chest high) and he’s getting a little scared.

I’m like oh shit dude alright, you get in the boat, paddle, and I’ll walk/swim alongside.

It’s good to remember that we’re both pissed out of our faces, giggling the whole time joking about how we’re fisherman now.

β€œYeahhhh, ahh, I been fishing these waters since I was just a boy” and putting my ear in the water and telling him how many fish I hear and what not. Great times. Giggling all the way.

Turns out, we had passed our set of bouys fucking ages ago, like, we’ve overshot 300 feet already.

The only bouys I see are fuckin’ miles away. Atleast 700/800 maybe 900 more feet. The whole adventure seems like a lot of work and the fun starts to dissipate. We’re actually pretty far out now.

The ground disappears. It gets fucking deep, fucking quickly and we’re shit I don’t know, like 1000 feet out from the shore and the water is cold and

[Suggestion]We NEED servers for the rest of the world (South America & East Asia)

Jagex is missing a HUGE opportunity to get new players in many continets

I myself am a Venezuelan legit player (miniclipper since 2004, nearly max total, 2b bank, have never sold gold) and it is frustrating to attempt end-game content with unreliable ping

Usually: -I die a LOT to corrupted hunllef because of single lag spikes, thing is too unforgiving and this is frustrating AF since I could have not done anything about it.

-Hallowed sepulchre runs last over 9 mins, on which my 70 ping world becomes 150 @ floor 5 making it even more challenging. (NA worlds are so unstable to south americans that every 10 mins or so they all shift, worlds that had 70 ping become 150, worlds with 150 becomes 70, half NA worlds are over 300 and EU/AUS worlds are over 300 always as well)

-GM combat achievments? I'll never be able to do these

-COX... since cox is long and the ping varies sometimes I fight olm @ 70 ping resulting in easy kills or at 150 resulting in multiple deaths

-Inferno? perpetually procrastinating it, I know I'm gonna punch a hole through my monitor if I get a lag spike at latter waves

-TOB? Phosani? PKing/PVP minigames? Raids 3? Nex (back in rs2 nex was doable, 10 years later servers are worse than back in 2011)?.... Guess they seem unforgiving and a lag spike would completely kill my motivation to keep going

Can we please get a Brasil server? I've seen multiple posts for Asian servers as well, the asian gaming market is probably the biggest one in the world. South America is pretty huge as well, even League of Legends have a Latin America North and Latin America South servers, acknowledging Latin America as a customer
