As politics has become more polarized, one area where the farther ends of the right and left seem to agree is general distrust of our government’s institutions and processes. The right has, to an extent, always been anti-establishment in terms of distrusting the government. However in recent years the left and more outspoken progressive sect have also expressed populist and anti-establishment beliefs. One example is the senate parliamentarian, whom a narrator in a Now This video described as “having more power than the president” despite the fact that the current parliamentarian was appointed by former senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and has done her job in a nonpartisan accordance. The Supreme Court is currently undergoing its own partisan metamorphosis, as is Congress as “establishment” candidate with leadership and political experience are replaced by inexperienced and younger populist candidates.
