His left leg does not have the shortest frontal finger and the shortest back finger either is genetically deformed or also partly missing (it is too short compared to his right foot and his nail is just a little super short tip, like a tiny needle). We got him like that from the store. I don't know if the store owners accidentally dismembered it (I saw them handling a cockatiel in an unfavorable way, and they caught my budgie in a way that terrified the shit out of him, so I assume it might be that with the way they handled birds, that when they were handling him before I came to get him they might have dismembered his fingers accidentally) or simply he was the submissive and bullied budgie of his flock, and his flock buddies might have attacked and dismembered his fingers.

When he was new I thought this was part of a behavioral problem like stress. I tried giving him a better lifestyle and activity with bomding exercises to make him happy. Maybe it would mitigate it. It's not the only issue; He seems to be traumatized of hands, but since I've managed to tame him, he only gets nervous around them now and I'm the only one he lets me pet and willingly flies to me... so it could also indicate that he was mishandled by the owners

I give him a balanced diet consisted of seeds, vegetables, fruits and millets. I let him fly around and bond with him everyday to the point where he loves flying to me, softly chirping on me, chilling with me and even sleeps on my shoulder.

But now he still likes.. playing, or grooming? a finger that isn't on him, like it was actually still on him. His movement otherwise is fine and in line with normal budgies, but he still treats his bygone finger like it's already there

Is this something like phantom pain in human? Where amputees "feel" their dismembered parts even though they are not there? And is this a concerning behavior, or it might be just a completely normal habit he can't give up?

And does anyone have a disabled budgerigar that exhibited similar actions on their amputated parts? Grooming them, "using" them even though it's not there anymore?

I am interesred in this subject, and I'm a bit nervous if this is cause for concern
