Since their last Copa del Rey trophy in 1984, they lost the 1985, 2009,2012, 2015, 2020* and 2021 finals.
*They played the 2020 final in April 2021 against Real Sociedad, losing 1-0.
Athletic Club de Bilbao is one of the biggest clubs in Spain. Many would put them as the third biggest club historically, but at the very least they are in the top four. They are a gigantic institution with 8 La Liga-titles and 23 Copa del Rey to their name, with a state-of-the-art stadium and a huge fanbase. But despite this, they have picked up the unflattering tag of "Spain's biggest losers" since their last period of genuine success in the 1980's.
In the 1983/83 season Athletic Club won a La Liga and Copa del Rey double, a huge success. It brought incredible scenes of hundreds of thousands of people out celebrating on the streets of Bilbao, and at that time you would be hard to find anyone predicting that they wouldn't win another big title for the next 37 years and counting.
Let's go through the finals they have played in and lost since that wonderful campaign:
1984/85 Copa del Rey: The start of the curse. Athletic loses the final to 2-1 AtlΓ©tico de Madrid
2008/2009 Copa del Rey: A 4-1 defeat to Pep Guardiola's sextuple-winning Barcelona side
2011/2012 Copa del Rey: Marcelo Bielsa's thrilling Athletic-side are comfortably swatted aside by Barcelona, with the final score being 3-0
2011/2012 Europa League: In the same season, Bielsa's Athletic experienced another heartbreaking final defeat. Once again they lost 3-0, this time to AtlΓ©tico de Madrid
2014/2015 Copa del Rey: Ernesto Valverde's side tries to go one better but once again comes up against a formidable Barcelona and loses comfortably 3-1
But nothing could prepare them for what was to come this season, with Athletic Club having reached the Copa del Rey-final two years in a row, but due to covid the 19/20 edition had been postponed for a year.
2019/20 Copa del Rey: Athletic don't even turn up to the biggest Basque derby that has ever been played, Real Sociedad wins 1-0 but the scoreline doesn't reflect just how little Athletic offered in this match
2020/21 Copa del Rey final: Still in mourning from losing the derby final, Athletic barely compete and allow Barcelona to run out comfortable 4-0 winners.
In summary, Athletic is a club that many people admire. The fact that they are the 3rd or 4th most successful Spanish club and one of 3(Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Club) to have never been relegated from the top flight whilst using only players trained in Basque academies is a remarkable achievement. Many would say that they punch abov
