First leg was played at full attendance on March 12th in Turkey, less than 24 hours after the Danish PM put the country in lockdown. Prior to this match, Liverpool had faced Atletico at Anfield with 52,000 spectators the night before, even though Spain was turning into a COVID-19 hotspot, as a decision by UEFA. A study shows that this match led to 41 COVID-19 related deaths.

March 12th, eight Europa League matches were to be played, but only six were. Two were cancelled due to them involving Italian sides. EUFA decided that the fixtures, which did not involve Italian sides were to be played, as if COVID-19 was not a factor in any of the other countries. All fixtures had attendances.

After months of battling the virus, Denmark has proved that it is possible to let football fans return to stadiums, but with vast restrictions and regulations. With the season having finished there has yet to be seen an outbreak as a result of a football match, with attendances as high as ~7,500. Despite repeatedly attempting to get in contact with UEFA, in order to secure fans' a chance to attend one of the most important matches in both clubs' histories, the home side has been met with standard replies from UEFA, which now means no fans will be able to get into the stadium on Wednesday next week.

UEFA's handling of the COVID-19 situation has been appalling from the start. While Europe was closing down, UEFA pushed teams into travelling across the continent and gathering huge crowds, which in return helped spread the virus. Now that the virus is regionally under control it is undeniably sportingly unfair that the Copenhagen side will not be able to invite fans and sponsors to attend the match, despite the situation being under control regionally.
