Todd Edwards was born on May 12th, 1974 in Dubuque, Iowa, as the son of a farmer and a nurse. During the 1980s farm crisis, his house was mortgaged, which made him become active in politics as a Midwestern populist. He enlisted in the military in 1993, being deployed to Iraq ten years later, where Edwards killed 47 enemy troops. He returned to America in 2006, being narrowly elected to the State Senate two years later. Edwards was known as one of the most populist senators, and soon become the Minority Leader. In 2014, Edwards ran for United States Senate promising protectionism, two-tier universal healthcare, a living wage, protecting unborn life and gun rights and to champion rural infrastructure.
Todd Edwards, an Iraq War combat veteran and former State Senator, narrowly defeated Joni Ernst in 2014 to succeed Tom Harkin as Iowa's junior US Senator. Edwards has caused controversy among fellow Democrats due to his openly pro-life, pro-gun stances, and focus on pro-worker populism at the expense of intersectionality (despite aligning with progressive Democrats on economic issues), but these views won him a loyal following in the Midwest and Appalachia. After dropping out of the Democratic presidential primaries in March 2020, Edwards filed with the FEC to run for reelection, highlighting his writing, co-authoring and co-sponsoring of populist economic legislation, also promising to work with the presidential election's winner to deliver for Iowans and Americans.
Incumbent Governor Kim Reynolds threw her hat in the ring, running as a mainstream conservative, both socially and economically. Reynolds promised to write legislation implementing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the US Constitution, ensuring low taxes and regulations across the board, champion free trade, and propose a bill reforming America's healthcare system through the free market.
Jessica Martin, a progressive Democrat and State Senator who unsuccessfully primaried Edwards, ran as the Green Party candidate. Marco Perez, a Republican state representative, was the Libertarian nominee.
