AskScience AMA Series: I'm IΓ±igo San MillΓ‘n, a researcher who trains world-class athletes, including the two-time Tour de France winner, with the goal of learning more about cancer, diabetes and other diseases. I've learned exercise is the most powerful medicine in the world. AMA!

Hi, Reddit! I'm IΓ±igo San MillΓ‘n. I am an assistant professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes and Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and associate research professor in the Department of Human Physiology and Nutrition at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

I've also coached Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar to two consecutive Tour de France victories and I try to provide the most precise, scientifically-based training for athletes at the top of their game. But that's only part of it. I also work with elite athletes to better understand the intersection of metabolism and disease, and I've developed new insights into how regular exercise shapes our long-term health.

I'm here to talk about and take your questions on a variety of topics including:

  • What is metabolic health?
  • What's the relationship between exercise and cancer? Or Type II Diabetes and Alzheimer's?
  • Why is exercise the most powerful medicine in the world? And how can different exercises affect how our mitochondrial functions?
  • What kind of training do elite athletes do in order to perform their best?
  • What is the nutrition of a Tour de France winner?

My research is trying to help to identify the role that metabolism could play in the development of different diseases characterized by mitochondrial impairment or dysfunction. I can elaborate on the connection between Type II Diabetes and Alzheimer's, as well as the role that lactate plays in cancer development. I can also explain the most effective form of exercise to maintain metabolic health and how fueling and exercise efficiency looks different for everyone.

I'll sign on around 10AM MT (1 PM ET, 17 UT), AMA!

(RT Podcast) I'm the guy riding the Tour de France for Cure Leukaemia! AMA, I guess?

Hi /r/roosterteeth - I'm the person riding the Tour de France for charity that Gus mentioned at the beginning of the RT podcast this week! I wanted to post to say thank you, give a little more backstory, and share the link to donate for those who want and can afford to donate - Extra Life is such a fantastic event every year and the RT community gives so much to help that great cause, so I figured some of you might be interested in learning more about this ride that I'm so lucky to be part of.

Gus had the high points right (although it was actually my girlfriend who sent in an email without me knowing, so it was a total surprise to me):

  • The Tour 21 Challenge: 25 amateur cyclists riding the entirety of the 2022 Tour de France (route here, fun cinematic overview here), a week ahead of the pros (2,068 miles/3,328km, roughly 150K ft/50K m of elevation gain, all over 21 days of riding with just three rest days). Of the 18 riders named so far, I'm the only American - the rest are all out of the UK.
  • Goal of raising Β£1M ($1.4M)for Cure Leukaemia, the UK's blood cancer charity, which will go towards accelerating clinical trials of new therapies by funding 12 treatment centers across the UK. Corporate sponsors help pay for the costs of the event so that everything raised can go towards doing good for patients.
  • I have a personal goal of raising at least $40,000, and currently have raised $18,917, as of 18:10 PST on 12/23.
  • We start on June 24th in Copenhagen, riding three days in Denmark, then head to France for the rest (except starting Stage 6 in Belgium, and ending Stage 8 and riding most of Stage 9 in Switzerland).
  • Since I was selected in early October, I've ridden 1500 miles in training, and will probably continue to do at least 100 miles per week for the next few months (along with strength training), ramping to at least 250 or 300 per week immediately before we leave.
  • This is the only event like it in the world, and only the second time it's been done; the first year was 2021, and you can watch a documentary about that ride (aired by NBC Sports during their Tour de France coverage) here.
  • If you want to follow my training: I'm on Instagram and Strava as grahamd_, and

Are any of the console versions of the Tour De France series worth it as a direct biking simulator?

Just learned that (at least some) of the Tour de France games aren’t management games like Pro Cycling Manager and sim games are right up my alley.

Are any of them worth it? If so, I’m looking for a balance of ease of access and graphics.

EDIT: And sorry if this is the wrong place to put this; the developer, publisher, and series all don’t have a dedicated subreddit.
