When Montreal and Vegas meet in the Stanley Cup Semifinals, they will be 2,240 mi/3,605 km apart. This will mark the farthest distance between two opponents in the NHL semifinals, passing the 1993 Clarence Campbell Finals between Toronto and Los Angeles (2,174 mi/3,498 km).

And for the record, I was using the straight-line method to calculate the distance, not Google Maps.

23 years go, June 3rd 1993, Marty McSorley gets called for an illegal stick in game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.

Reports suggested Canadiens coach Jacques Demers knew which of the Kings' hockey sticks to challenge, thanks to a Montreal Forum employee assigned to the Kings' locker room who temporarily moved the Kings' portable stick rack to the Montreal's locker room. Demers has denied this and credited captain Guy Carbonneau with spotting McSorley's illegal stick.

Because it's the cup

With Phoenix's win tonight, the last time any of the remaining Western Conference teams was in the Stanley Cup Finals was the 1993 L.A. Kings. Before that? The 1970 St. Louis Blues.

And none of these remaining Western Conference franchises has ever won a Stanley Cup. Should be interesting.

Also, if Florida, Ottawa, and Washington win, Philadelphia will be the only remaining 2012 playoff franchise with a Stanley Cup (if, of course, you don't count the original Ottawa Senators).

Were the 2008 and 2009 Stanley cup finals between the Penguins and Red Wings the best finals series’ since the lockout?

The amount of star talent was simply baffling. The Red Wings, led by Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Rafalski and company, were Mike Babcock’s finest team. Experienced, battle-tested vets vs. the up-and-coming Penguins, led by Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, Staal, and Gonchar. Throw in Hossa on both sides and an intense game 7 in the latter final. Thoughts?

The Montreal Canadiens are on pace to have the worst point total for a team reaching the Stanley Cup Final in the previous year (since 2001)

I only went back to 2001 because that's when the loser point was added for OT so other point totals may have been skewed.

The previous distinction was held by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2003 at 61 points.
