1981 Southeast Asian Games Puns

Background: Across RPGSEA is kind of like Stumbleupon / directory for RPGs made by SEAsian folks.

Well...today, I just finished adding the 75th game to the site :)

If you look at https://across-rpgsea.com/directory you can even see a nice tile of the game thumbnails. These were mostly submitted by SEAsian designers themselves (then I manually check/upload/save).

When I made the site in March, at the time I really just wanted a repository of games shared by folks during Session Zero Con (a convention that happened January).

Now 9 months later, it feels really good that Across RPGSEA is still alive and kicking — because I'm really proud of the site, and maybe, folks are having a better, easier time discovering our indie games.

A few months back I saw this up-and-coming game for either the Switch or the PC (or both) that's about a high school boy from either Malaysia or Indonesia. It looked like one of those cozy slice of life narrative games that have drama elements. All I remember other than that is it features the character's girlfriend (or crush) in some significant way.

Other details that might help: I THOUGHT it was being published by iam8bit's Asia division, but I couldn't find it on their site. I also distinctly remember it being still in development.

Age of Empires 2 has several expansions with one being the Rise of the Rajas which focuses on medieval Southeast empires. There are four campaigns focusing on the rise of the Burmese, Javanese, Cambodian, and Vietnamese empires and kingdoms. We play as Gajah Mada as he fights for independence from the Mongols and builds the kingdom of Java, as Suryavarman I as he builds the kingdom of Cambodia, as Bayinnaung as he builds the empire of medieval Burma, and as Le Loi as he fights to free Vietnam from the Chinese Ming Dynasty.

To those who had not seen the latest trailer, see this video. This discussion is something I made specifically not just to this site, but to open up to other gamers outside Southeast Asia on what are the obstacles it faces in a completely differ gamer culture where its real life economical status heavily defines the games they play.

For me, when I saw this trailer this morning, it really leaves me quite surprised on just how big of a jump it made from the first trailer way back last year. However, this is something I do need to share and want to ponder. In this case, as a Southeast Asian (SEA) gamer, this is my gut understanding for who this games appeals to beyond the Chinese Mobile Gamers. It actually appeals as well to the lower middle class Southeast Asian gamers.

For those not aware of other MOBA games outside of DOTA 2 and League of Legends, a Chinese MOBA game called Mobile Legends Bang Bang (developed by Moonton Games) is one of the most popular and one of the biggest Esports games in Southeast Asian countries. In my current perspective, this will be its biggest competitor for many reasons.

a. Majority of SEA Gamers that want to play games see the majority of Nintendo, Playstation, and XBOX consoles as something for the rich. For most of them that cannot save enough money and almost never uses credit cards properly, gamin on those "gaming only" consoles are not worth it. You have to defeat this question thrown at you if you want to win them over: "Why get any of those consoles when a Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, and Full blown utility PC can give me games and everything else I need?

b. Of course, we cannot ignore the common stigma that Tencent leaves behind just because of being affiliated with the Chinese CCP and their blunders from past IPs like League of Legends in the recent years.

c. Finally, we do not exactly have yet a good idea on how strong is the Pokemon Brand in Southeast Asia. At least in my country the Philippines, it is in the realm of outdated in terms of the franchise. The most would recognize Pokemon is through Pokemon Go, the old school Anime, knockoff products and merchandise, and that it is identified as only a "purely kids cartoons brand".

d. These kinds of games are seen as careers that can alleviate themselves and their families and friend "out of poverty." Also known as the real life situation of most Filipino esports gamers and even fello

The main dev (u/Ateo88) has been working on it for over 3 years now, and I recently started helping out as we prepare for launch. There's an old browser based demo (link below), but an updated demo will be out on Steam soon, and Early Access in March. Localization is planned and it's PC only for now, though we hope to port to Mac and Switch in future.

EDIT: I would appreciate it if people respond humanely and refrain from insulting my mum.

Our conversation was brief, and it could be that she was too tired to explain further or irritated from something that happened earlier (unrelated to this). Maybe what she said was not entirely her viewpoint, but just her own personal experience from over 20 years ago.

She has not yet married off any of her children or started the search for it. Nor have her friends (whose children are near my age). She does not have much first-hand experience of arranged marriages today (a *post-*COVID world, digitally finding a spouse, etc), because everyone my age who has gotten married has had a love marriage. Or she was not involved in the process of the arrangement, she's just been involved in some conversations pertaining to it.

She is my mother and I still respect and love her. You lot have no reason to be disrespectful. It's impractical, useless and does not answer my question or further this discussion. When it comes to it, I will be holding my ground and doing it the way we understand as best insha'Allah. Over the next couple of years I know with the help of Allah swt it will all be fine and they will come to accept how I want to do things, within reasonable bounds ofc.

I've always said to my parents that I prefer an arranged marriage so everything can go halal (not that love marriages are haram, but keeping it halal these days is very difficult... if it happens then Allahu alam.)

I always assumed that arranged marriages go like this:

1. Parents find u a match / more than one potential
2. You agree / choose
3. You get to know each other w/ a wali present
4. Agree on the rishta
5. Get married

If at stage 3 you realise you're not a match, you can reject it.

After talking to my mum, she says doing so is "disgraceful" and talking without agreeing on the rishta is besharam if anyone sees (even with a wali?).

She says arranged marriages go as such

1. Parents find the match / more than one potential
2. You agree /choose
3. Families and the couple meet, agree on the rishta
4. (optional) You can meet to get to know each other more
5. Get married

When I asked if at stage 4 you can reject the marriage, she said no again, because then everyone would find it a big deal and talk and things so basically again... it's disgraceful and embarrassing since you've agreed on a rishta. Unless there's a huge flaw in the other person, then
