A list of puns related to "1964 Democratic National Convention"
President Jackson was widely expected to win in the Primaries, but a high youth *write-in* campaign and a white backlash would have something to say about that.
New Hampshire -
Since this happened, before the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Jackson win without opposition.
Wisconsin -
Wisconsin was 5 days after the Primaries. Due to this, the write-in movement for Bobby Kennedy hadn't been able to get enough to win the state or come that close. Instead, George Wallace would have his turn against the President. In the state, Wallace rallied up the white ethnics getting an impressive 39% with President Jackson getting 45%. Write-ins for Bobby Kennedy in the urban areas of the state got him 16%. Jackson won the state, but it was clear that his support was very very low. Soon after, Bobby Kennedy resigned as AG (despite promising not to) and announced his candidacy.
New Jersey -
President Jackson hoped he could win in New Jersey while Wallace hoped he could get a win over the President. Bobby Kennedy needed to get a good showing and New Jersey was a good opportunity to do so. A lot of the hawkish and urban votes got split, giving Kennedy a solid 43% vote. Jackson got 30% while Wallace got 27% of the vote.
Indiana -
Indiana would be a key state in the primaries - with all 3 candidates believing they could have a good showing at the beginning. However, Indiana's lack of a strong minority vote along with a comparative lack of Unions would hurt Scoop Jackson. In the results, Kennedy expanded his vote from New Jersey getting 45% of the vote, Wallace got 27% with the sitting President Jackson got 28%. Then, in a stunning speech - Jackson announced he would not seek re-election to focus on the War in Vietnam. He then began rallying up favorite sons to his candidacy who were all united around Lyndon Johnson of Texas.
Nebraska -
Despite being a typically conservative state, the Nebraska Democratic Party was pretty divided between young Omaha Liberals vs rural farm conservatives. However, the lack of white ethnics plus RFK's attack on Wallace potentially cutting farm subsidies would hurt Wallace. In the end, Robert Kennedy got 58% with Wallace getting 39%.
Maryland -
Despite the high minority population, Maryland had just as many if not more 'backlash' white ethnics who were highly attracted to Wallace. Furthermore, racial issues had divided the state heavily and got many Kennedy voters in 60 to Wallace. In a shocking upset, Wallac

The Democrats are hopeful that after their successes in the midterms they will manage to translate it into a victory in β64. Several popular politicians have announced campaigns, with five major candidates in the running for the nomination. They all claim that they will be the best candidate to bring in disaffected Republicans and get back in the White House after 12 years.
George Wallace
The favored candidate is the 45 year old Governor of Alabama. He first came onto the scene when he won a surprise victory in β58 with the backing of the NAACP. Known for being a racial moderate in his time as a judge, during his time as Governor he has become a supporter of Civil Rights and even invited Martin Luther King Jr. to speak at the State Capital. He had also started the βNew Dixie Movement,β which takes former Confederates, such as Longstreet & Mosby, and promotes them as men who recognized their wrongs, and degrades men such as Forrest & Stephens for their inability to recognize the truth. He also uses the Confederate Battle Flag, as he states that βThis was the peopleβs flag, the flag that represented what the average person was fighting & dying for; the Stars & Bars was just the flag of the intolerant & backwards aristocracy, who couldnβt accept the future that was coming towards them, just like some elitist & unpatriotic folks down south that I could name today.β Due to his un-vague insinuations, he has faced several attempts on his life and has received even more threats to do the job right. He is known for his populist rhetoric which inflames the crowds he speaks to. He supports Stateβs Rights, calls for a major cutdown in the FBI, and wants the Department of Justice returned to MacArthur era levels. He also is a supporter of workerβs rights and has devised a plan which would provide subsidies to States for their own social security & medicaid programs, so that they can be more efficiently run by each State individually. Along a similar vein, he also supports increased school subsidies to each State, with a portion earmarked specifically for trade schools. He also supports an increase in funding for the Small Business Administration, so that they can subsidize & provide loans to small businesses across the nation. He also supports a strong foreign policy and supports the space & nuclear programs, stating that nuclear energy could be the key to limitless power.

Ah the Democrats. Once losing in a landslide to Republican Candidates, now posing a real threat to them. The Election of 1924 has proven to the Democrats that they can still win the Presidency.
Al Smith, the third placer in 1924, has made the decision to run for President once again. With Underwood and McAdoo rejecting to run for President again, many see him as the presumptive nominee, but we'll see how things play out. Position wise, Smith is much like Underwood. Heavy opponent to both the KKK and Prohibition. However, Smith is a dirty catholic, which will turn off some voters. Otherwise he is a safe, but sort of boring, candidate, with appeal to the north.
Senator Walter F. George of Georgia
While certainly not a Progressive, Walter F. George of Georgia certainly does have some Progressive leanings. He currently supports Hoover' reforms, and the Senator would be a safe choice for the Democrats position wise, but is relatively unknown by most of the general public. This could both hurt and help George depending on what he does with it. On the other hand, he does oppose any sort of civil rights legislation, as he believes it violates the constitution.
Senator James A. Reed of Missouri
Senator Reed certainly is an unknown figure. Like many leading democrats currently, he opposes the KKK, but this does not mean that he is anti-racist. He once said that all non white people should not be allowed into the US, and supports restricting immigration. However, Reed was the only senator to vote against the Emergency Quota Act of 1921, which would've heavily restricted Immigration. So, yeah, he's quite the complicated figure. But, he's also experienced in economics. But we won't need experience in economics, the economy is booming!
Chairman Cordell Hull of Tennessee
Representative turned Chair of the Democratic National Committe

Senator Joseph T. Robinson of Arkansas
Joe T. Robinson is the incumbent Minority Leader for the Democrats. He supported Wilson's progressive agenda, and championed the Keating-Owen Act. The Act banned sale of goods made in factories employing those under 14 and mines employing those under 16. A Progressive through and through, Robinson is a safe pick for VP.
Major General Henry Tureman Allen of Pennsylvania
Not much is known of General Allen's personal beliefs, but what is known is his war experience. A war hero and veteran of WWI and the Spanish-American War, General Allen's war experience is sure to bring in at least a few votes. He was also the Vice President of the 1924 Olympics Committee, so that's something. One problem is he's very old, being about 69 years old. Some fear he may even die soon.
Senator Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky
Initially a Conservative, Wilson's New Freedom agenda inspired Barkley to become more Liberal. A staunch Prohibitionist, Barkley was a speaker for the Anti-Saloon League, and helped pass laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol. He's a Democrat through and through, and will remain loyal to the party no matter what. He also has much appeal out west, which is important. If the Farmer-Labors nominate Thomas instead of Hoover, the West will almost certainly be a very contentious area.
Illinois Secretary of State Lewis Stevenson
Stevenson does not have much experience, sure. He's only served as Secretary of State for the state of Illinois, but that doesn't mean he's not an active Democrat who can do the job of Vice President just fine. He's the son of former VP Adlai Stevenson, and is very active within the Democratic Party. He's frequently consulted on Party Policies, and is very trusted within the Democratic Party. He'll also be happy to do much campaigning in Illinois, a key state the Democrats w
... keep reading on reddit β‘After a crushing defeat in 1924, the Democrats are eager for their revenge. Five big candidates stand up to get their party's nomination and restore the Democrats to their former glory.
Candidates:
Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo
William McAdoo was the Secretary of the Treasury under the Wilson administration, and is the son in law of President Wilson. McAdoo is known for his energy and enthusiasm, and would bring much needed energy to the ticket. He is also an ally of the Progressive Movement, and if he and Hoover are nominated, it would almost certainly be the beginning of a new Progressive Era.
Al Smith is the incumbent Governor of New York. Also a Progressive, Smith is well liked by the Democratic establishment. However, his Catholicism and heavy association with Tammany Hall may be liabilities for the Democrats.
John Davis, former Representative from Virginia turned UK ambassador under the Wilson administration, also throws his hat in the ring for the nomination. Davis has appeal to both wings of the party, but has little appeal from the rest of the south for his pro segregation stance (despite supporting black voting rights prior in his career).
Oscar Underwood is a senator from Alabama. He is known for his anti-KKK stances. Despite threats from the KKK, Underwood stood strong. Underwood is also anti-prohibition. He is also a supporter of Wilson's progressive reforms. Underwood's anti-KKK stance could potentially help out in the North.
A former Populist, the former Secretary of Agriculture would definitely help in retaking the west from the Republicans. Other than that, not much is known about him nationally, and he is only really known amongst rural voters out west.

Candidates:
Jonathan M. Davis is the incumbent Governor of Kansas, and he has quite the resume. As Governor, Davis cut taxes, endorsed women's rights and prohibition, increased funding secured for veteran's pensions, limited banking procedures, authorized an improved road bill, and controlled utilities. Davis is most definitely fit for the job.
The mayor of New York steps up for a shot at the Vice Presidency. He is known for fighting against big business interests to try and protect the working man. He will be the correct choice if the Democrats choose to go full on Progressive Populist.
The Governor of Nebraska, and younger brother to the legendary William Jennings Bryan, has decided to run for Vice President. If he is picked, it will be mostly due to name recognition. Voters out west definitely remember the Bryan name, and could either bolster a populist ticket, or balance out a Conservative candidate such as John Davis with a populist one.
Democratic Candidate for President in 1924, Senator Oscar Underwood
Democratic Candidate for Vice President in 1924, Governor Charles Bryan
It was finally over. Over 78 ballots, it was finally over. The Battle of New York, or the New York National Convention, is what finally caused the Democrats to ditch the god awful 2/3rds rule. McAdoo and Al Smith duked it out for the first 60 ballots, with Underwood acting as a spoiler for both sides. McAdoo finally worked out a deal with Underwood, in which Underwood would be the pick for President, if McAdoo got to be Secretary of State. Underwood eventually took the lead, and eventually got the 2/3rds necessary to become the nominee. The Vice Presidential Ballot went much, much, better. Governor Charles Bryan was nominated on the 4th ballot.
The Democrats had their ticket. It was time for them to retake the White House!

With George Smathers and Lyndon B. Johnson announcing they both will not run again in 1968, the Democratic Party is frantically rushing to choose a candidate to compete. There are four options.
Hubert Humphrey, Senator from the state of Minnesota and good friend of Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert is running a liberal democratic campaign and is against the Vietnam war.
John Glenn, former NASA astronaut, Glenn is in favor of many similar economic policies as LBJ proposed in his Vice Presidential Great Society programs. Glenn also wants to increase funding for space exploration. He has not yet stated his position on the war in Vietnam
George McGovern, a Democrat from the state of South Dakota, McGovern is currently a stand-in candidate for RFK, who is still in poor condition after the failed assassination attempt on him. If
John Connally, a member of the conservative wing of the Democratic Party from Texas, he wants to cooperate with the Republican conservatives across the aisle. Connally wants to see the Vietnam war won by ββ¦any means necessaryβ.
Summary of Andrew Jackson's First Term
After the Federalists, three more conventions meet. One, the Democratic-Republican convention, stands strong, expecting to nominate an incumbent. The second, the National Federalist convention, is a new party who has to choose whether to endorse the incumbent president or vote for someone new. Finally, the Bucktails, holding only 24 seats in the House, have to choose a candidate who can hopefully revitalize their party.
1828 Democratic-Republican Convention:
Candidates: Incumbent Andrew Jackson had no opposition for a second term.
Balloting (1):

---|---|
Andrew Jackson | 256 |
Jackson won all 256 delegates on the first ballot.
Vice Presidential Balloting: While president Jackson easily got renominated on the first ballot, his Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins' path to renomination would be much more difficult. Tompkins was a Democratic-Republican strongly opposed to slavery, which most southerners disliked. However, Jackson supported Tompkins, as the president worked well with him and according to Jackson, Tompkins serves a valuable role in balancing the ticket. Overall, Tompkins did win on the first ballot with 154 delegates, but Secretary of State Edward Livingston, Governor of New Hampshire Levi Woodbury, and former Secretary of Treasury Martin Van Buren were all proposed as alternatives.

1828 National Federalist Convention:
Candidates: Many National Federalists wanted to endorse Andrew Jackson for the presidency, but Governor of Connecticut Oliver Wolcott Jr, as well as Representatives Roger B. Taney and Francis Baylies also ran. There was a draft effort for former Minister to Britain Richard Rush.

Lewis Cass - Senator Lewis Cass is soon to be retiring from the Senate - but he still desires to be in Washington. Thus, he has made a last half-hearted attempt at the Presidency. He was a clear supporter of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the idealogy of popular sovereignty in regards to slavery. He is also an advocate of Manifest-Destiny, even supporting Scott's Compromise of 1855 despite being "The Father of Popular Sovereignty" in order to gain land. He advocates expansion to take Cuba, by force or purchase and opposes agreements with the UK, dating back to his War of 1812 days, and he of course advocates Popular Sovereignty.
James Buchanan - James Buchanan is the recently elected Senator from Pennsylvania after some time away. A contender in the 3 previous nomination battles, Buchanan has support from many in the South. He is an ardent expansionist calling to revisit the Oregon Treaty, looking at Cuba and even Alaska. He is also known to be sympathetic to many in the South, through his close friend Wiliam Rufus King and he believes in allowing states to choose their own course for slavery while attacking abolitionists in New England.
Stephen Douglas - Senator Stephen A. Douglas is known as the Little Giant and is a Senator from the state of Illinois. He is an advocate of massive expansion - both via Whig Internal Improvements, Democratic Trade Policies, and Manifest Destiny. He has adopted Senator Cass's position on the slavery of supporting popular sovereignty and wrote the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, vetoed by President Scott. Nonetheless, he swallowed his pride and supported the Compromise of 1855 as a measure to save the Union. He is also very ambitious and makes another attempt at the Presidency, however, with opposition from the Deep South due to his unrelenting support of the Compromise.
Daniel Dickinson - Former Senator Daniel Dickinson of New York is a darkhorse candidate for the Presidency. Being nominated by his home state of New York, he hopes for a deadlock to win. He is a firm Hunker, staunchly opposed to the Wilmont Proviso and even opposed to reconciliation with Free Soil Democrats named the Barnburners. Despite this, with Van Buren's age and Marcy's time out of office, Dickinson is the only man who can stand for the fiercely independent New Yor

With incumbent president Ulysses S. Grant's administration being rocked by scandals and corruption, a new political party has been formed by dissatisfied Republicans: the Liberal Republican Party. The Liberal Republican Party seeks to root out corruption in politics through civil service reform, and is generally classical liberal. They have already nominated former congressman and newspaper editor Horace Greeley for president and Governor of Missouri Benjamin Gratz Brown for vice president. The Republicans unanimously re-nominated Grant for president, and barely nominated Senator from Massachusetts Henry Wilson over incumbent Vice President and Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax for vice president. The Democratic Party has two choices: either nominate Greeley for a united anti-Grant ticket, or follow the party's platform and nominate a Democrat.
THE CANDIDATES
Horace Greeley
Horace Greeley is the Liberal Republican nominee who is seeking the Democratic nomination in order to form a united anti-Grant ticket. His campaign themes are anti-corruption and civil service reform, due to the corruption and scandals in Grant's administration. 61 years old, Greeley has been involved in politics dating back to 9th President William Henry Harrison's election in 1840, and has also been a major newspaper editor. He was a U.S. Representative from New York for 4 months from December 1848 to March 1849, although he was unpopular amongst congressmen due to his newspaper investigating Congress. He was one of the founders of the Republican Party, which angers many Democrats. Nominating him would also nominate Benjamin Gratz Brown for vice president.
James Bayard Jr.
The leading opponent of nominating Greeley, Democrat James Bayard Jr. was a U.S. senator from Delaware from 1851-1864 and again from 1867-1869. His father was also a U.S. senator from Delaware, but was a Federalist. His maternal grandfather was a signer of the Constitution. A conservative, Bayard was an insanely strong supporter of slavery, and even represented slave owners in front of the Supreme Court. He also supported the South seceding from the Union, including Delaware. When he was required to swear an oath of loyalty to the Union he refused, stating that such an oath would be unconstitutional, and a

Democratic Nominee for Vice President in 1928: Representative Cordell Hull of Tennessee
This Convention was a lot less chaotic than the last one. They had a clear front runner, and they went with it. Al Smith of New York has won the nomination for President, with the charismatic Representative Cordell Hull of Tennessee for Vice President. Hull, a southerner, will most likely keep the southern base in line, while Al Smith will help with gaining votes in the north. The two trusted figures in the party will almost certainly give Hoover a run for his money. Al Smith's anti KKK stance also appeals to black voters turned off by Hoover's pocket veto of the Anti-Lynching act.
