Mrs. Speaker, Members of Congress, Auditors.
It is with great honor I welcome you to the opening of the 17th Congress of East Africa. Hopefully, all of you know who I am by now. But for our new MOC, I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Hamidi Abasi, President of the East African Federation. Some might say I run this country. In a way, they are right. I am the Head of State. Everything happening in our country is my responsibility. Sadly, those who say this often forget our democratic values.
Behind me works 395 representatives in the East African House of Representatives. Each and every week, you gather in this very room to discuss and debate about everything from handicap sports status to the future schools of our country. A couple of hundred meters away work 25 senators in the East African Senate. I honestly do not really know what you do. But I can assure you that you are doing a really good job at it!
420 human beings. Handpicked by the population of the East African Federation. You are all a part of creating a future. A future for our children, a future for our country, a future for us. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder. You are doing an amazing job, without you, I would not be able to run this country. We would not be able to run this country. Because running a country is not a one-man show.
At times it can be tiring. Trust me, I know. So I hope that you have taken the past month and relaxed, slept and rested. With that said, running a country is not something you suddenly can stop doing. Meanwhile we have had our three annual weeks away from the chambers, thousands of officials have been working around the clock. They always are. Just as people should not forget the MOC, we should not forget the officials.
Now, ladies and gentlemen, I can see that Mrs. Speaker is gasping and I take that as a sign that it is time for me to end my speech with the final conclusion that I could have just said thank you instead of writing a long speech about it. Thank you for your amazing work. But, as you might know, I like taking it one step further. For you. For the people. For the East African Federation. Because we are one people. One destiny.
I hereby open the 17th Congress of East Africa. Thank you!
>Hamidi Abasi, President of the East African Federation
