PSA: Owen Griffith who died in Isle of Wight, VA in 1698 was most assuredly NOT the son of John Griffith and Jane Owen of Lynn, Carnavan, Wales
This might not be directly relevant to anyone currently on this subreddit, but I have seen so many trees that perpetuate this error that I wanted to make a quick PSA so that it might appear to future researchers on Google searches.
Many people have connected Owen Griffith who died in Isle of Wight, VA in 1698 to John Griffith and Jane Owen of Lynn, Caernarvon, Wales. Of those few trees who cite a source for this, many of them are citing to page 260 of "Historical Southern Families: Volume VI" by John Bennet Boddie. This page purports to be a reproduction of a chart (apologies for the Ancestry link) for the Griffith Family from the "Visitation of London 1634 page 332." Boddie's chart lists 3 children for John Griffith and Jane Owen, including "Owen Griffith second son came to Isle of Wight Will dated 7/15/1698" For obvious reasons I was suspicious about this chart since a chart made based upon the 1634 Visitation couldn't possibly know about a 1698 will. Since the original source would be better than any reproduction, I set about locating this chart. Having located the "Visitation of London 1634" I saw that page 332 bear no such Griffith chart. This made me more suspicious, but I decided to look through the surrounding pages and found this chart on page 334. Perhaps Boddie simply made an error, one might say. However, if you look at this original chart, John Giffith and Jane Owen's second son's entry simply reads "Owen Griffith 2 sonn." At this point it was quite clear that Mr. Boddie had taken this chart and asserted that the Owen Griffith in VA was this same gentleman, but that he had provided no real evidence to support that assertion. I then decided to Google the names involved and see if anything came up, and there were a few people who alleged that the Archives in Wales said that John and Jane's son died in 1671, but nobody was providing any real sources for that information. The National Library of Wales has a biographical entry for various members of the Griffith family, including John Griffith II, solicitor. His entry states, in part, "His
