β€œIn the celebrated Treatise on Wisdom [1601], by Charron, we find, for the for the first time, an attempt made in a modern language to construct a system of morals without the aid of theology.

There is about the work of Charron a systematic completeness which never fails to attract attention. In originality, he was, in some respects, inferior to Montaigne; but he had the advantage of coming after him, and there can be no doubt that he rose to an elevation which, to Montaigne, would have been inaccessible.

Taking his stand, as it were, on the summit of knowledge, he boldly attempts to enumerate the elements of wisdom, and the conditions under which those elements will work. In the scheme which he thus constructs, he entirely omits theological dogmas; and he treats with undissembled scorn many of those conclusions which the people had hitherto universally received. He reminds his countrymen that their religion is the accidental result of their birth and education, and that if they had been born in a Mohammedan country, they would have been as firm believers in Mohammedanism as they then were in Christianity [see: religion as a function of birthplace]. From this consideration, he insists on the absurdity of their troubling themselves about the variety of creeds, seeing that such variety is the result of circumstances over which they have no control. Also, it is to be observed that each of these different religions declares itself to be the true one and all of them are equally based upon supernatural pretensions, such as mysteries, miracles, prophets, and the like. It is because men forget these things, that they are the slaves of that confidence which is the great obstacle to all real knowledge, and which can only be removed by taking such a large and comprehensive view, as will show us how all nations cling with equal zeal to the tenets in which they have been educated.

And, says Charron, if we look a little deeper, we shall see that each of the gr

CMV: Literature classes aren't just for fun, they are and should be for teaching you to read in a certain way

I see a lot of people, especially people around my age, talking about how lit classes in high school "ruined" reading for them. This is a sentiment I empathize with, since I didn't read for pleasure for a while after I left high school. I'd definitely learned to associate reading with required work rather than pleasure.

However, where I stop short is with the idea that middle and high school literature classes should be about just letting you read books that you like, or helping you find books that you like. "Literature" is an unfathomably vast array of works that spans just about every culture on earth. If you only ever stick to books that you like right away, you'll end up with a very limited view of literature, and of the world.

Now, I know that plenty of lit classes don't live up to the diversity of literature as a whole. However, I still think that there's good value in the "classics", as they're called. Reading complex literature (and no, most YA is not complex) and learning to analyze media through a critical lens is one of the most important skills a human being can have, especially nowadays when we're more personally responsible than ever for filtering the information we receive.

I think reading for fun is a wonderful thing, and I'd never judge someone for liking a book, provided it wasn't written by Ayn Rand, but literature classes are there to teach you something, to help you develop critical thinking skills. And odds are, the books that you like as a middle/high schooler aren't going to be books that can teach you those.

Description: Here you have a 1970 Rolex Datejust 1600 with a 1601 style fluted bezel. Comes on a very nice jubilee bracelet. Rolex stamping on the clasp and micro adjustment. Pie pan dial, great shape for its age, a couple dots of discoloration and a speck of dust under the crystal. Watch comes with box, no papers. Non quick set, fitted with an aftermarket clear-as-day sapphire crystal. No issues keeping time while in my ownership.
Description: This is quite a beautiful watch. The jubilee bracelet is eye catching but elegant and iconic in the way only Rolex is. I've gotten a lot of compliments on this watch, and whoever is lucky enough to win this will too!
