THE GREAT YUAN SHU IN THREE KINGDOMπŸ’‚β€β™€οΈ

Yuan Shu is a character in the three kingdoms that comes from a long line of elite members of the society.🧐His growth through the government ranks was rapid as he rose to the status of the General of the household Rapid as a Tiger.πŸ… He, in turn, rose to the top of society and became a powerful warlord. βš”οΈ

One of the skills he lacked was in his administrative duty.  This he combated by taking administrative advice to advise from more experienced hands 🎭like Sun Jian in affairs relating to his Military affairs.

He was prominent in the struggle against the corrupt rule of the Han dynasty.πŸ“œ After aligning with Dong Zhuo and taking over the capital, he then, in turn, aligned with another group of warlords in a bid to go against his former ally. 🀝

His father ended up dying at the hands of Dong Zhuo in retaliation for his rebellion. This led to a struggle between him and his stepbrother for the mantle of leader of the family.πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

After taking the mantle of leadership in his family, he was able to defeat Dong Zhuo with Sun Jian's aid repeatedly.

In the end, Yuan Shu's kingdom was destroyed by Cao Cao after his failed attack on the Xu Province. Yuan Shu saw the rest of his days out in a village. He later died from an illness he suffered from.☠️

Dynasty Warriors 9 Yuan Shu ending

Good day everyone. I've just finished Yuan Shu's story in DW9 and was pleasantly surprised. It's both emotional, tragic and has a good moral. It was nice to see Shu finally understand the essence of kindness just before his death, which forced him to cry and see how wrong he has been the whole time.

I think it's one of the best cut-scenes in the series, it'd be nice to hear your thoughts.

Idea-Building: Yuan Shu's Officers

Hi all.

I'm trying to come up with ideas for the generals and advisors under Yuan Shu. I'd like to vary them in terms of motivation, personality, appearance, fighting style and any other factors I can get away with.

I have already been advised to vary where they're from and why they serve Yuan Shu. Some are from the areas he has domain over, some are childhood-friends of his or owe allegiance to the Yuan family. Some are friends with allies of Yuan Shu or personal enemies of Yuan Shao or his allies...

A quote from Harry Potter referring to the Death Eaters is quite appropriate.

>"They were a motley collection; a mixture of the weak seeking protection, the ambitious seeking some shared glory, and the thuggish gravitating toward a leader who could show them more refined forms of cruelty."

Obviously not openly evil in this regard but Yuan Shu, as history showed, wasn't very good at holding onto power. Nonetheless, I have been assured that he did, at one point, control some of the largest areas of influence in China during the beginning of the Jian'an Era and I'd like to build up some ideas for what sort of people served him and what they did under him.

The information I have is sparse so anything for the following is much appreciated.

Chen Ji (How can I vary the Ji? There's already at least two Chen Ji's running around)

Chen Yu/Gongwei

Han Yin

Shi Yiguan

Yan Xiang

Yang Hong

Li Feng (Same problem. There's already at least two Li Feng's. Any variations?)

Liang Gang

Yue Jiu

Yuan Yin

Zhang Xun

I've already got some ideas for Ji Ling, Qiao Rui, Liu Xun, Jin Shang, Yuan Huan, Huang Yi/Zi'ai, Lei Bo and Chen Lan. Yu She and Xun Sheng might not have existed but I need not necessarily leave them out entirely.

And the Sun need no introduction.

So anything you can suggest will be taken into consideration. Thanks.

Ji Ling Joins Yuan Shu (190 & 182 Start Dates) Mod

Hi everyone,

I released a new mod on the Workshop that addresses something I feel that I've seen many people discuss before: Yuan Shu's lack of unique characters in the 190 start and his difficulty in obtaining them because of the relatively high (50) legitimacy cost.

Here's the link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2470584078

Specifically, this addresses Yuan Shu's one historical unique character currently in the game: Ji Ling. Although he starts with Yuan Shu in the 194 start, in both the 190 and 182 starts he is in the Han Empire's recruitment pool. Because the Han Empire often doesn't hire him, he bounces around other factions recruitment pools for a while before being hired. Because he has fondness for Yuan Shu, he often shows up there, but Yuan Shu simply doesn't have enough legitimacy in those few turns to hire his only historical unique general.

This mod aims to spice up Yuan Shu's faction up by having Ji Ling join Yuan Shu in the 190 and 182 campaigns BY DIFFERENT MECHANISMS (read below for details).

190 Rise of the Warlords Campaign: Ji Ling will start with Yuan Shu in the 190 Rise of the Warlords campaign. This is accomplished with a simple lua script: in the vanilla game, Ji Ling is in the Han Empire's recruitment pool in the 190 start. The script I wrote removes Ji Ling from the game, and then recreates him in Yuan Shu's faction. To prevent too much desire for higher court position, I set him to only spawn at rank 2, so you get to pick a skill on turn 1 (see screenshots). This also helps him not immediately leave the AI Yuan Shu faction due to dissatisfaction, which would violate the purpose of the mod.

Ji Ling now starts with Yuan Shu in the 190 start date, always at level 2

182 Mandate of Heaven Campaign: Additionally, I've created a new event for the 182 Mandate of Heaven campaign where Ji Ling will have a chance to join you after 30 in-game turns. Note that unlike in the 190 start, the event will only trigger if you are playing as Yuan Shu: if you are playing any other faction, the event will not fire and he will not necessarily go to Yuan Shu. This is to prevent him from suddenly disappearing from the player's faction. After all, MoH is more of a sandbox experience anyways.

Lastly, I added him onto

Faction Spotlight: Why you should play Yuan Shu

Why you should play Yuan Shu (in 190 AD)

https://preview.redd.it/hl3y5q2uymt51.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=34ff0952dbea69f12ac36d24e172c93074b04430

Full credit to u/pbadger8. People have been clamoring for more of these and figured I would give it a shot for one of my favorite figures of the era. I am going to keep it close to his style so people reading through these have a sense of uniformity. That said, let's jump right in.

Who am I?

The illustrious Yuan Shuβ€”styled "GōnglΓΉ"β€”gallant, powerful, arrogant, and weasely. You are rich, powerful, and influential thanks to your family: a born winner whose claim as heir would be assured had your father not made a child with a servant maid to make your half brother, Yuan Shao, or "the family slave" as you like to call it. Though he threatened your inheritance from the moment your uncle adopted, you are the only one fit to take up the mantle as Yuan family leader. You know it. Your brother better know it. And you'll make sure that the rest of China knows that you and only you have what it takes to rule over the lands.

Yuan Shu starts with Arrogant, Cruel, and Ambitious traitsβ€”he's a man who knows what he's worth, what he can become, and he will rise above the common rabble to make sure his potential is fulfilled...just make sure no one shoots that target on his back in the process.

Where am I going?

Renowned as a skilled, gallant hunter, you showed signs of greatness from early on in your career. You were nominated as Filial and Incorrupt, a label you strove to uphold by leading your corps of Imperial Tiger Guards (falsely attributed to a certain little conqueror) to slay the eunuchs who had been plaguing China with their self serving manipulation of the emperor.

Though you sought to end the corruption, all you truly managed to do was drive a frightened emperor into the hands of Dong Zhuo and guarantee his rise to power. You fled to Nanyang, allying with other influential warlords to combat the usurper. You thoroughly burned your bridges with him by executing every single envoy he sent to negotiate, eager to win fame by defeating this traitor to the Han.

How should I play this loveable weasel?

Yuan Shu is one of those characters whose faction mechanics get a bad rap, I think, when in reality he is by far the biggest diplomatic juggernaut in the entire game.

Rather than recruiting characters through straight gold, you instead use your unique faction mechanic, L

PLEASE try Yuan Shu!

I am a Total War addict. I have over 3500+ hours on TWWI and TWWII combined. Since the WE DLC is till a bit far I decided to go back to TW3K since it had received many updates since late last year when I stopped playing. Oh boy! It's so much better now. I kept replaying campaigns I had played before, and the improvement is very noticeable and in almost all aspects.

This post though is just to tell you to try Yuan Shu's faction. I had NEVER played as him before since he seemed a lame character, without many legendary characters, meh unique units, etc. But he is a powerhouse! For once in my thousands of TW hours I can see how impactful diplomacy is. It's a blast! You keep gifting 5000 coins/turn for people to acknowledge you as future emperor, which sounds ridiculous as ANY other faction. But trust me, it works for this one. Everyone LOVES you after a while! Also, you can't recruit many generals, so the few you have are very special, and this helps you develop a sort of special link with them.

PS: I had never manged to capture Xu Huang, but it's ultra easy as Yuan Shu, since he just prances through your territory by turn 4-5. I beat him (and captured him) in legendary with only 3 generals. It was a hard battle, but with cycle charging cheese it's doable and man, I think Lu Bu has found its match on this guy. He hits like a truck.

Yuan Shu and Liu Chong Too

Continuing on suggested warlord tweaks I decided to talk about these two together because not only are they linked by story events but mechanically speaking both are pretty well realized. Fortitude and legitimacy are both well designed and give very powerful buffs. There isn’t a lot to suggest changing. The only things I can think of is that Yuan Shu (or whoever your faction leader is) should get a little bit of additional legitimacy from being on the field like Yuan Shao now does with his lineage gain. It would also be interesting if perhaps Yuan Shu had some additional assignments to spend his lineage on that brought different buffs. As for Liu Chong I really don’t think he needs any mechanical changes though I wouldn’t mind if he could spend fortitude on something like maybe annexing Han empire settlements like Liu Bei. This would fit Liu Chong thematically as a scion of the imperial house.

For faction unique buildings, of the two only Shu has one. I personally don’t like it. The best use of the building chain it replaces is corruption reduction. Yes, the zhong administration increases wealth from all sources, but without corruption reduction that feels kinda meaningless. I wouldn’t mind if the effects were tweaked to make it a little stronger especially since it costs precious legitimacy to build. The reform tree his unique building is down is also very long so it’s unlikely you’ll even get to build the Zhong palace during your game.

Like a said, Liu Chong doesn’t have a building and doesn’t need one as the trophy cabinet is a very good replacement. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few more trophies added to unlock. There are currently trophies unlocked for fighting yellow turbans and Han so maybe add some for fighting Nanman or nomads (assuming they’re next).

Now for unique units we’ll start with Yuan Shu. Let’s be real, rapid tiger infantry and warriors of the left are bad and pretty much always have been. The common joke is the only rapid thing about these units is how quickly they die to arrow fire. Even with the recent nerf to archers this is still true. However i now have a bit of hope for these units. With Fates divided yuan shao got the LIang daring infantry which are also a shield less Melee infantry. Except these units have a cool ability that buffs their speed and damage actually making them quite deadly. The ability to rapid advance helps deal with the vulnerability against arrows and adds enough damage to help turn a melee fight. I would li

Yeah yeah everybody hates Yuan Shu, his unique bonuses/units aren't too great and there that diplo cheese with his legitimacy ability. However, his campaign starting position is difficult in a good way. Liu Biao is more powerful than u and you don't have enough food and money to send a 3 stack to snuff him out and defend against liu chong, Zhang yang and Yuan Shao at the same time. Unlike most other factions Dong Zhuo might actually send LΓΌ But to fuck you up as well. Then u gotta fight Cao Cao because without food you're getting minus 20 disorder a turn. Your generals hate each other and theyre generic against unique gods of war but u gotta make do with what u have because it's so desperate. A Yuan Shu Guide: Look at me I'm the Dong now.

Hello, and welcome to how to swing that big bad Yuan dong around without having to vassalize 100 people as the filthy lesser brother. Also for the record I play on hard. Your mileage may vary on harder difficulties.

Alright, so at this point we've already selected the only proper starting choice and are now playing Yuan Shu

Yes perfect some nice ancillaries

Now you might have to restart once or twice if you get really shitty starting ancillaries. You want something semi decent, because you're about to dupe that tiger down south of his only possession worth a damn.

That's right the imperial seal

You don't want those silly ancillaries I just made you restart to get better versions of, you're going to give it to the frosted flake mascot for a fancy stamp that gives you the divine mandate. I think that's what it does? Ah who knows, you're an emperor, the little things like what imperial seals do is for your underlings.

Look at that he's even willing to pay us for the privilege of removing the horrible burden from him. We're really the good guy here.

Now we can go ahead and do the usual beating up of the trash starting enemy and taking the jade mine.

Hello sweet sweet jade. You should just delegate this because arrow towers are mean.

Don't waste any of your money on buildings or any such nonsense there will be time for that later.

Oh and don't forget to equip the imperial seal like I totally didn't forget until the end of the turn

Great we've ended the turn and started turn two.

First we'll go ahead and move as close to Nanyang as we can because we need to keep moving. Time to fill out the chaff...I mean soldiers a little to help you with your little conquest.

I guess you could pick anyone but I like strategists and this is what I always do so you if you want to follow me exactly you will too.

Next do a little recruiting to fill out the army more. I replace the calvary and unique unit in Yuan Shu's army just to get some more money rolling in and bring Yan Xiang up to 5 archers.

Army should look like this generally unless you went with a different general

Go ahead and end the turn.

Then you'll move up to the border of the lumberyard for Luoyang

Then we'll go ahead and end the t

Yuan Shu is one of the best late game factions ?

Many people find Yuan Shu useless and boring. I myself did once.

But it is because they only see his early game, which is kinda hellish. Legitimacy is hardest resource to gain early game. And his unique units suck.

Many people underestimate his late game economy. He late game economy from Industry and Commerce is "crazy rich asian". He doesnt need to rely on trade for income.

Moreover, he can obtain 30+ legitimacy per turn from his "underdog" vassals. Vassals give permanent legitimacy, not 8 turns. Use that to become super super rich, and afford expensive units.

To compensate his useless faction units, we can just unlock "dragon units(Azure and pearl)" via tech tree, boosting his economy and food at the same time. I prefer Azure first.

Yuan Shu is hard, but he is like Forrest Gump. You may see him only as a limping warlord, but you havent seen him run.

Yuan Shu and the long con

Normally not a fan of espionage features in total war games, but I have to admit I was impressed by how one single move completely torpedoed my last playthrough.

Be me, Liu Chong, 182 start. Decided to try abandoning Chen and relocated to the NW sector of the map via the convenient river. Crushed the Liang rebellion, took out Han Sui and Ma Teng, pushed Dong Zhuo to the eastern bank. Even managed to snag Lu Bu before him from Ding Yuan.

That's where my problems began. Early on I recruited a female strategist with some decent traits. Adopted her and managed to lure in Lu Bu via marriage and promptly made him my heir. So I think I'm doing pretty well having secured my corner when all of a sudden the next turn I lose vision over the central chunk of my map. WTF?

Check the notifications and it turns out Lu Bu has defected along with his wife whom i adopted who turned out to be Yuan Shu's spy. Even worse, she was governor of Anding which has a livestock and farm thus is the major food surplus province in that area of the map. I'm now -20 food in the hole. Lu Bu also took with him a +2 Public order faction wide ancillary and a -5 corruption one as well. I move my remaining third of the army (which didn't defect) into Anding where what do I see but Lu But sitting in the city... with a full stack of Chen Royal Guard he took with him when he defected.

To add insult to injury the treacherous woman took all four of my grandkids with her along with Lu Bu.
