Xlr Connector Puns

I’m setting up my studio, a hybrid setup of gear I have collected, new gear I’m investing in, and in-the-box software/plugins.

For my outboard preamps, I’m planning to use an XLR patch bay to improve productivity during a session, and clean up the room. I have a lunchbox with 500 series preamps (SSL and Neve), a cheaper tube preamp, the Apollo Twin X, etc. And so I need to connect them to the patchbay.

Would you spend 2x the price for gold plated XLR cables, or go with silver?

Considering I do a lot of post production editing, manipulating EQ, effects, chopping, etc… doe the added benefit of gold cables justify the extra cost?

I'm a sound engineer that soldered his fair share of XLR cables and like to generally attempt to fix broken things. So when a friend of mine told me his Sony ECM-670 condenser canon microphone had the XLR connector damaged and that he messed it up while attempting to fix it I offered to take a look at it.

I dismantled the connector and indeed he made a very poor job at trying to fix it.Although I realized there were some components between the XLR "pins", my electronic knowledge is extremely basic, but after a few Google searches I realized it might be some security condensers. But, while removing the solders one of them broke.
Although I kinda wanted to test the microphone without them and soldered everything back without (BLACK to 1, RED to 2 and YELLOW to 3) and the microphone is now working well, but since I don't understand the reason they were here in the first place, now that they are not anymore I'd like to know if that could be a problem?

From my understanding, condenser microphone needs a 48V external power source called PHANTOM power which uses the ground pin (PIN 1), PIN 2 is in-phase signal (hot point) and PIN 3 is 180° out-of-phase signal (cold-point) (symmetric XLR pro connection) are those components suppose to act as some kind of diodes or something?

I'm using a Sound Devices Mixpre 3 mounted under my video camera. It is oriented so the XLR plugs face the rear of the rig. I've got a pretty light-weight set up, but I've noticed that I often rest the rig against my chest as I'm filming. This means sometimes the XLR cables get some pressure. They aren't taking much weight - maybe 500g-1kg max. But it is some pressure all the same.

How gentle are people treating their XLR connections? Am I worrying about nothing? Or do I need to start thinking about some sort of cable/plug protector? And does such a thing exist pre-made for the Mixpre-3?

Looks Like it's normal Heatshrink so i can just cut it open, but does it make sense to Re-Use that Clamp where it pinches the Cable Together, or will it not get the same Tightness?

Hey all,

I'm buying an XLR cable for my LCD-X and am making sure that if it's custom it's truly XLR. My question is that on the female end of the connectors do all 4 pins need to be connected to a wire from the base XLR male connector? I'm not used to or acquainted with the modding or making of wires so I need clarification on what I should expect. For more information to make sure, the connectors on the LCD-X are mini xlr to connect to the drivers. I've been offered a modded cable that was custom but originally single ended but then modded again to be XLR, is this true XLR or just a modded connection so I don't receive all of the benefits of XLR? Thank you!

The XLR headphone (front) connector on my Schiit Magnius has always had some vertical play in it since purchase (new, A-Stock). It's almost as if the connector will 'click' up or down like a toggle switch.

I haven't been that concerned as it's had no impact on performance or usability. But after looking at a picture of the board on Schiit's website, I'm now wondering if it's putting stress on the contact points.

My experience with XLR connectors is limited to the Magnius. Searching didn't really yield any results.

Has anyone else experienced the same (with Schiit or another manufacturer)? Is it a cause for concern?

So it's been about a month since the last one of these due to life ramping up, but I also have a ton of exciting new products as well! Also, to make up for the time since the last post I've grinded out a ton of batches and have my biggest drop I've ever done and combining it with my sale pricing to bring ya'll some quality cables at an even more reasonable price! I liked the way I did this last time with a dedicated update section so I'm going to go ahead and do that again below! If you're not interested in what we have going on/in the pipeline, please feel free to skip ahead down to the tables where we have all for sale items listed :)

Updates:

• MDPC-X is being added to my inventory from here on out. Decided to give it a try after seeing Voxel swear up and down by it for my entire time I've been making cables and have got to say I now see why he swears by it. I don't plan on removing paracord, however, after working with the material and seeing how much better the end products come out I'm only going to recommend MDPC-X from here on out. For those unfamiliar with this it's an alternative sleeving material that will replace paracord on the cables. It's made out of a similar material to techflex and as such gives much more vibrant colors as well as increasing the springiness of the coil resulting in a much more premium feeling cable. Here's a picture that should show you the difference between the two materials (MDPC-X is on top). The one downside to this material is the additional cost (about 5-6 times the cost I can source paracord for). Choosing MDPC-X will add $5 to a standard length cable, but I can promise it is without a doubt worth it! I have a much larger order coming this week so expect to see a lot more of it in the future. All cables will be explicitly labeled with [MDPC-X] in my tables below so you can easily tell which are and which aren't.

Every website i go to says that the 3rd pin is on the bottom but the rean rt 3 mp has it on the right. and the 2nd pin is on the bottom so has the female mini xlr the 2nd on the bottom. also the beyer mini xlr to 3.5 cables has the 2nd on the bottom and 3 on the left. meaning they all work toghether.

but every damn diagram has the 3rd on the bottom so how do i wire the mini xlr. (also the rean mini xlr's are the only ones i can find near me)

edit; is the 2nd ground then. also doing it unbalanced to a 3.5.

So I just got an Apart Champ 2 amplifier, but I don't have the needed cables to connect i to audio player. It has "Channel 1 Input - Bridge" and "Channel 2 Input" in the back, on each side of the 2 output amplified audio. I got some questions:

1. Do I need to wire both of the up, with L and R side of stereo (CH 1 gets L and CH 2 gets R)?
2. My idea is to cut a mini-phone cable (audio jack), and put the wires into the connector, test if it works. Is that possible?

I have 2 200w floor speakers, but only a 35w amplifier, and this one is 350w, so that's why i want to test it.

So I’ve recently purchased a MixPre-10 ii and love it, but I’m having a big problem with my XLR inputs. The connectors are consistently getting stuck and I have to use incredible force to get it out every time. Even though I’m able to get the pins out by unscrewing them from the shell, I’m afraid of damaging the inputs on the connector.

Has anyone else had this problem with this mixer/other MixPre mixers? I’m considering getting a replacement if it seems I just got a defective one (though it seems to be on all 8 inputs). It would seem easier and smarter than adapting all of my XLRs to remove the lock, as I’ve seen from videos.

Hey there, I used to use my headset mic for streaming but recently decided to upgrade to an actual microphone. I decided on a dynamic xlr mic since I have some background noise and want more control over how my audio sounds like. I'm a bit confused about the whole xlr thing, I heard that I need a cable connector and a mixer / audio interface. I only plan on streaming gaming so I just need audio for my game, my mic, and sometimes discord. Do I need a mixer or audio interface just for this, and which one is recommended, mixer or interface. Some recommendations for which one to get would be appreciated (I'm getting the Shure SM7B mic, link) I have a pretty hefty budget but since the mic is $400 I am looking for a $200 or less mixer (200 being around the max, but I can go for more if I get a good pitch). And recommendations on a connector would be appreciated.

Updates:

• With all my commissions for them fulfilled, I went ahead and used up the last of my first batch of cerakoted aviators to provide an assortment of White and Black mixtures for those of you like me that like monochrome. My cerakote vendor also should have my next batch done hopefully next week and it's 100 total aviators. I'll continue to try to stock as much as possible with black and white connectors as they're 70% of the total order, but I also have some spicy ones in the works so keep your eyes peeled for future posts!
• I finally got my restock of YC-8 connectors and still have about 100 more of those bad boys on hand to be able to keep having those available for my regular drops since the demand for them has been high every time I've included them in the sale posts!
• I got a package that I swore got lost at sea or swallowed by the USPS distribution center that contained an order that I had already gotten replaced since it took so long to ship. It was mostly USB-C connectors, but I doubled my stock of Mini XLR cables as well so since I had a fair bit on hand I decided to do a batch for ya'll to gauge interest as to whether or not I should keep these as a permanent fixture in my drops. If these sell well then expect to see some more of them :)
• With all these other connector types that are a little more specialized I will likely be rolling back a little bit on my standard aviator connector production. I don't believe I made any new standard aviator cables for this drop that weren't on the last one, this is just stock that hasn't sold yet. I'm definitely not getting rid of them or anything so don't worry about that, I just likely will start cutting down to my more popular colorways on these.
• I've been trying to get my hands on a larger variety of techflex and paracord colors to be able to offer as much variety as possible. I was looking at ordering a new cable, but I was also eyeing off some headphones that use a Mini XLR connector. Currently my headphones use a 3.5mm connector so I was wondering if there is any issue if I ordered the 3.5mm connector and used an adapter to Mini XLR if I was to get a pair later?

Would this work okay still?
