How could an economic outlook based on potlach evolve in an industrial or proto-industrial world?

Potlach is a type of feast or gathering that has been practiced among Pacific Northwest Native Americans (the Tlingit, Haida, etc) for centuries, and is a primary legal institution for a lot of cultures in the region. In a nutshell, a wealthy member of the community hosts a large party in which they give away or destroy large amounts of their wealth in order to demonstrate their relative wealth and gain followers; it also serves as a time to work out legal disputes and have celebrations (this is a gross oversimplification, but for the purposes of our discussion, it works as a summary, as the economic aspects of potlach are the important thing here). The most crucial difference between a system similar to potlach and a system more similar to what we have now is the use of wealth; in mercantilist, feudalist, and capitalist economies, wealth is usually displayed in the form of expensive luxury goods rather than redistributed, meaning that whoever has the most wealth is considered the wealthiest. In a potlach-based economy, since the wealth is redistributed to followers rather than hoarded, whoever gives the most wealth is considered the wealthiest.

Thinking about how a potlach-based economy would work with a pre-industrial or newly industrialized culture, I imagine mercantilism would work out more or less the same, with the difference being that profits from exports would go towards strengthening the state via potlach as well as more conventional means. In such a society, those who invent newer and more efficient ways of doing things would find themselves culturally beholden to redistribute the wealth they made off those inventions to their followers (in this case, employees). This in turn would probably encourage innovation, if not to enrich oneself materially, rather to enrich oneself societally; if you're trying to upstage the employer on the other side of town in a potlach-based economy, a new gadget or mechanism that they can't replicate is an excellent way to do it. Given enough time, this might result in a pseudo-socialist or pseudo-communist economy, where innovation is encouraged for the sake of advancing cultural wealth rather than material wealth (and thus, indirectly, for the sake of employees, workers, and everybody who benefits from the innovations the wealthy commission for potlach ceremonies).

Thoughts?

IMF: World Economic Outlook - Managing Divergent Recoveries (April 2021 Chapters)

The IMF recently released the newest installment of its publication the "World Economic Outlook" including 4 new chapters. It has also updated its projections for growth. Descriptions and links for each chapter are taken from the issue's webpage here.

Full report text (PDF download) - includes all 4 chapters

Table of updated projections

Chapter 1: Global Prospects and Policies

Although the contraction of activity in 2020 was unprecedented in living memory, extraordinary policy support prevented even worse economic outcomes. One year into the COVID-19 pandemic, a way out of this health and economic crisis is increasingly visible, but prospects remain highly uncertain. The strength of the recovery will depend in no small measure on a rapid rollout of effective vaccines worldwide. Much remains to be done to beat back the pandemic and avoid persistent increases in inequality within countries and divergence in income per capita across economies.

Chapter text (PDF download)

Chapter 2: After-Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prospects for Medium-Term Economic Damage

This chapter examines the possible persistent damage (scarring) that may occur from the COVID-19 recession and the channels through which they may occur. Importantly, financial instabilitiesβ€”typically associated with worse scarringβ€”have been largely avoided in the current crisis so far. While medium-term losses are expected to be lower than after the global financial crisis, they are still substantial, at about 3 percent lower than pre-pandemic anticipated output for the world in 2024. The degree of expected scarring varies across countries, depending on the structure of economies and the size of the policy response. Emerging markets and developing economies are expected to suffer more scarring than advanced economies.

Summary of Economic Affairs 2026

World

  • The world continues to watch in terror as several local conflicts threaten to jeopardize global stability. In particular Asia seems to have spiralled into a conflict hotbed.

  • World economies are spooked by a crisis in the Chinese debt market.

Africa

  • Morocco completes an epic water project and her economy booms as a result

  • Tanzania continues her march onwards ever carrying the economic weight of the East African Union.

Europe

  • The United Kindom completes a grand surveilance of her seabed rescuing her economy from the threats of Asian crisis.

Asia

  • The Chinese juggernaut took a haymaker in the form a debt bubble but as ever Chinese resilience and government action absorbed the worst of it.

  • South Korea bares the worst of the economic crisis out of china, and a war in North Korea against Russia. Her economy has the major wobbles as a result.

  • Taiwan breaks under pressure of sanctions and crippling global action, her market is worse for wear as she slips towards becoming the new DPRK.

North America

  • The United States holds its breath as Taiwanese sell-off and Chinese debt crisis give her economy a spook unseen since 2008. Joe Biden's legacy may come from how he reacts.

South America

  • Brazil is hit hardest by the crisis out of Asia and her economy makes her neighbours panic in response. South America holds its breath waiting to see the Brazillian response.

Oceania

  • Australian AHSRI project insulates her nearest neighbour New Zealand but cannot spare her northern ASEAN neighbours or south Pacific islands. She will be expected to carry the load for them in the recovery to come.

  • Timor-Leste survives the crisis by joining ASEAN and a bunch of trade bloc's and keeps herself afloat.

Sunstrideralar, known by the community as Sunny, has brought you this first global market Panic with Eve's glorious help. Please wish Eve well and curse Sunny for bringing your economic ruin.

Summary of Economic Affairs 2025

World

  • The world watches in terror as several local conflicts threaten to jeopardize global stability.

Africa

  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen years of economic policy come into fruition as growth exceeds initial investment.

  • Tanzania, after years of quiet growth and reforms, has seen a similar achievement of growth. One has to wonder if not this century perhaps next century will be the African century?

Europe

  • Europe sleeps as economic progress remains stagnant

Asia

  • The Sea of Japan, or East Sea for those of us civilized enough, has seen an open air nuclear explosion for the first time in years and years. This has lead to a slowdown of shipping and fishing in the region. Japan in particular has seen a reduction in growth due to war concerns.

  • North Korea has seen pressure from all sides as it further isolates itself from the international community. With Chinese and Russian disapproval of its actions the only question on the mind is how much longer the hermit kingdom can last?

  • The Chinese juggernaut continues to grow as various domestic policies and reforms come to fruition. With the RoC acting up a slight hit in trade is taken as the world watches. Additionally, one needs wonder about the various sources of debt incurred by the People's Republic

North America

  • Uncertainty in East Asia has lead to some slight reduction in growth for the American superpower

  • As with all things Canada follows the American lead

South America

  • South America do be slumbering

Oceania

  • Smart maneuvering by the Australian government, both domestic and beyond, has lead to modest growth.

Sunstrideralar, known by the community as sunny, has been brought, forced really, along onto the IMF team to better simulate the world economies.

Summary of Economic Affairs 2021

World

  • COVID-19 response far and wide across the world has been swift and merciless. As the vaccine has made its way out to the world economies have found themselves rebounding for lost growth in 2020.

Africa

  • The destruction of the GERD and subsequent flooding of Sudan has caused investors to flee and economic activities to halt. The prevention of total collapse was due mostly to American and Chinese aid into the state. Investors in Egypt, running at the site of American withdrawal of funds, have caused quite a slowdown in economic performance.

  • In Eritrea the collapse of the government after the death of the President, and the coup by the military, has eroded already rocky faith in the government.

  • In South Africa austerity has lead to a rare burst of economic growth. Will this growth continue past year one?

Europe

  • Italy has emerged from the pandemic with a staggering 9% growth rate, as promised by the PM, due to mass reforms and economic investment.

  • The rest of Europe sees mildling growth as governments are slow to rebuild following the pandemic.

  • As the promise of cheap Ukrainian wheat into the UK is realised British farmers huff and puff and Ukrainian farmers count their blessings.

Asia

  • Macau pentuples in size as the central government sees fit to take a gamble on the city of Sin. With the legalization of brothels what can this eternal playhouse of the Devil do wrong?

  • Russia making money moves with Japan and South Korea has restored some faith in the country following the absolute shitshow that the Europeans and Americans have given the bear.

North America

  • Mass internet investments find merit in the US.

South America

  • Argentina finds itself finally taking advantage of lithium resources in the country.
