... keep reading on reddit ➡What are your favourite moments of your favourite characters? Here are a few of mine. Moseley
Complaining about being a chump, just standing there watching a men be dressed, when he was talking about Matthew being reluctant to have a valet dress him. Like, it's such a small moment but it really made me smile, and I can mark that as the point I began to warm to him. I think what I really liked what that he was so blunt and straight talking about it, and pointed out that actually, a job where you are predominately helping a grown get changed can be very awkward. Especially when you have nothing else to do except just stand there and watch.
Getting Dr Carson to get him out of being conscripted. I guess we are meant to see it as cowardly, but considering how awful the trenches were and how much the war really achieved, my hat is of to him for getting out of that situation (ditto for Violet for already trying to pull strings to spare Moseley and William the trenches.)
Befriending and defending Miss Baxter. and tutoring Daisy. Was a wonderful chance to see a different side to a character who is so often used as a comic relief. Kind, generous, clever and passionate. The overall arc of Moseley starting off as the butt of jokes, but showing this stronger and smarter side of him, culminating in everyone around him being so happy when he makes a success of teaching, is really heartening. And all the time keeping that self-deprecating, funny characterisation which makes him so engaging.
All his comedy moments. Dyeing his hair blue, accidentally getting drunk during the flue outbreak, pretending to be a cricket star, and most of all, curtseying to the queen. That scene was both my favourite moment in the Downton movie, because it's hilarious, and least favourite, because it is excruciating. What is so painful is how long that scene, with all those silences is. No music, now relief from the pure agony he must have been feeling. Excellently done, but I still can't watch it without looking away or skipping forward. He's always ripe for comedy gold.
Thomas
Dancing the Grizzly Bear with Daisy. One of his few series 1 moments when he isn't scheming or being cruel, instead just having fun.
Getting his hand shot on purpose. His acting in that scene, when he sees the wound and thanks God for his deliverance, that mix of agony but also relief when he realises he will never have to go back in his voice, along with the music and light, just sends shivers
For my 2022 reading challenge I have decided to read 1-3 books from every country in the world. This past year I attempted to do the same but the lack of preparation meant I was bogged down finding and waiting for books. Below is my reading list I have compiled as several people have mentioned they were interest.
Facts
It contains 520ish books with two countries I still need to find something for. 40% are female, 55% are male, and 5% are by various authors. There is a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. It includes everything from memoirs, cookbooks, histories, anthologies, legends, folkstories, poetry, plays, fantasy, romance, chick-lit, and scifi. The bulk is literary fiction.
Methodology
I started with the books I owned that I haven't read or wish to reread. I then looked through my TBR list on goodreads and reassigned those. From there I looked up my favorite authors on https://www.literature-map.com/, and included other authors similar to my favorites. From there I googled each country for their top 1-2 most popular authors. I finished with suggestions from reddit (including the country threads on r/books) and the amazing https://ayearofreadingtheworld.com/thelist/ . Authors with unlisted titles are because I was not able to find a copy of any book by the author at my library or for purchase (<7$) secondhand. These will need to be ILL and I’ll be deciding on the exact title when I apply for the loan.
Updates
I will be updating reviews of the books, as I go, on a subreddit I made for this called r/worldwidebooks . People are welcome to join me in the challenge for all of them, parts, or just to laugh.

A quick word to Travers and a five minute wait later, and a young woman arrived at the door. She was shorter than the crew we'd interviewed so far but still just as physically fit - certainly stronger than I was. She seemed guarded in much the same way as Okumu - but her features were not outright hostile - apparently she had a better sense of diplomacy. If I were to guess she'd probably be in her late thirties.
"Mind if I have a go?" asked Sarkona. Tungsten gave a brief bow and sat down, Sarkona taking his place. "What is your name and rank, please?"
The reply came back in a distinctive voice - no notable accent, but a little scratchy and worn. "Reserve Specialist Emery Meers, base botanist."
"Thank you. And when did you last see Commander Jackson?"
"In the canteen, last night. He was taking his divorce really poorly and Hollings and I thought we'd cheer him up a bit. One thing led to another and before we knew it we were all a bit tipsy."
"A bit?"
She sighed, "Alright, I admit it, we were really drunk. Jackson was especially bad, Hollings had to practically carry him back to his room. The two of them went off together. Then I went to bed and tried to sleep it off."
"Did you often drink with the Commander?"
She huffed, "No. But you know, he was feeling down since his divorce so I said to Hollings we should try and cheer him up."
"Can you think of any reason why anyone on the base might try to kill him?"
It took her a moment to respond. "Okumu has never liked him," she said, "Some bad blood there. Hollings was sponsored into the program by Jackson, guy was practically his mentor - doesn't seem like the type. The Doctor? Who knows. I've been training with him for three months and he hasn't given me one fact about himself - I've seen potato plants with more personality."
Antonia chimed in at that. "Did you say you're a botanist? What are you hoping to do on the upcoming mission?"
She looked a little disappointed at the statement. "Ah, I'm not actually on the mission. I'm a Reserve Specialist - I'm training for the mission afterwards - if it even goes ahead. But if I do get to go to Mars, I'll be trying to develop plants that can grow in a hostile environment."
"I'd love to see what you've been working on," Antonia said.
"Boring things mostly - genetically modified plants for growing in space. The interesting botany t

If you've got those down, we can move on:
The example of "Five Fold Prophet" Wanda Alger popped up on another Reddit sub a bit ago. In response, I opined that...
"Wanda may or may not be a True Believer; IDK4S, OC. But if she isn't, she is one of the most cynically sociopathic leveragers of The Manipulation of Fear by the Pseudo-Christian Cults I have yet encountered.
"She is no better -- and actually far worse (and more dangerous), in my opinion -- than many of those who physically led the charge up the Capital steps almost a year ago. A righteous fool profiting from Let's you & them fight! in the best tradition of the irresponsible 'rabble rousers' in Hoffer's book who wouldn't be caught dead in the actual front lines of The Revolution.
"Paranoid-Delusional Disorder is sooooooo common among the Prisoners of Hate including those described at the links below:
"Is Fear of Militant Islam the New Christian Crowbar? What do YOU think?
"Christian Fundievangelism has ALWAYS increased when Militant Islam threatens Christian Hegemony
"Actually, several other clinicians I know who deal with Religious Trauma Syndrome patients agree that the fundievangelical churches appear to be full of untreated victims who are displacing their rage in exactly the manner described in the OP's post and my direct reply to them."

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
