There are hundreds of huge 17th and 18th century country manor mansions in Great Britain and Ireland, all of them with incredibly intricate and lavish interior design. Who were the people who built them? Was it local general labourers or private companies with trained staff?
Iβve been a builder for three months now, and since I started I canβt help but scan every room Iβm in to see how it was built. Itβs given me new appreciation and insight into how exactly rooms take form. Even just a simple room with minimal interior construction (skirting boards, plasterboard, light fixtures) can take a team of builders, electricians, plasterers etc. days to finish, due to the sheer amount of precision required.
Iβve visited many country houses in Ireland, and Iβm struck by the excessive interior design, I simply canβt imagine how such rooms were constructed in the past with simpler tools, less developed engineering and less labourer skill.
So my question is were these rooms designed and planned by a small number of skilled individuals who then delegated to a staff of general labourers or did large private companies of the time train and supply teams of skilled builders?

[CLAIM] United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
Hi guys,
I'm deepfriar, and I'm looking to claim the UK. I'm still doing some catch-up on current in-game events since the 1836 divergence (with a lot of help from hugh, thanks); but, overall, I'm generally hoping to play a semi-historical UK with a special interest in domestic affairs and the colonies.
While I'm not especially well-versed in 19th century OTL history, if you guys have any suggested reading please send them my way.
As per the wiki, here are the some basic outlines of what has happened so far and my future plans (lots of help from hugh):
- Events since 1836:
- Supported the Dutch (along with the French and Prussians) during the Belgian Rebellion
- Prince Alexander of Orange-Nassau married to Queen Victoria
- Papua ceded to the UK in return of recognition of Dutch authority over Borneo.
- Alliance with the Dutch.
- Closer alliance with the Portuguese
- In return for Goa and Mozambique.
- ?Alliance with the Ottomans
- Received Cyprus and Rhodes.
- Conflict with Russia
- Was mentioned to me that Riga and Talinn were ceded but also that the OOC validity was unclear.
- Seizure of Aden.
- Sikh invasion of Tibet
- Sikh invasion of Tibet
- EIC intervention on the Sikh side (~3 regiments foot; ~1 regiments cavalry; 3 battalions horse artillery).
- Ireland
- Successful establishment of a new governing body for Ireland easing sectarian tensions; increased Protestant migration
- Ineffectual relief for the 1839 Hurricane.
Plans (for now):
- Resolve the Opium conflict.
- Ireland
- Continued governmental reforms, easing of sectarian tensions.
- Piece together what's going on in Continental Europe.
Thanks guys.
