I had read An Intimate Chronicle: The Diaries of William Clayton a ways back and several entries by Clayton gave me suspicions that their relationship was... well, quite complicated, and maybe scandalous?
Clayton was personal scribe for Joseph Smith and seems to have had a deep and personal relationship with both Joseph and Emma. He records quite a bit about plural marriage, his first introduction to plural marriage and also Emma's dissatisfaction and anger over it at times.
Clayton records how Hyrum had asked Joseph to write down the revelation on plural marriage so that he could show it to Emma and convince her of it. Joseph seemed quite sure that Emma would reject it. Hyrum did take it to Emma where he received an ass kicking by her over the "revelation" (Smith, pp 557-558).
In May of 1843 Joseph seems to show some paranoia or suspicions over William Clayton and Emma's relationship ββ¦President Joseph told me that he felt as though I was not treating him exactly right and asked if I had used any familiarity with Emma. I told him by no means and explained to his satisfactionβ (Smith, p. 106).
It was less than a month later that Joseph again approached Clayton on the subject. William says, βThis A.M. President Joseph took me and conversed considerable concerning some delicate matters. Said [Emma] wanted to lay a snare for me. He told me last night of this and said he had felt troubled. He said [Emma] had treated him coldly and badly since I cameβ¦and he knew she was disposed to be revenged on him for some things. She thought that if he would indulge himself she would tooβ. Joseph then mildly threatened Clayton that disloyalty could lead to a loss of the Celestial Kingdom (Smith p. 108).
It's interesting and almost comical to see jealousy from a man who had already entered into secret plural marriages and even secretly marry other men's wives. But why the suspicion with Clayton? They did all spend a great amount of time together, but this is the first I've heard of Joseph questioning someone over whether they had gotten frisky with his wife #1.
Also in the spring of 1843, William Clayton had secretly married Margaret Moon. She had been engaged to another man who was on a mission. There were several people that were naturally upset over this, but one of them was Emma. Joseph had told Clayton that " Emma was considerably displeased with it but says he she will soon get over itβ (Smith, p. 115).
After Josephs death Emma
... keep reading on reddit β‘I know the Tanners published the supposed salacious parts of his journals. Does the Intimate Chronicle contain the same content? Is it worth reading?
I have been reading around and keep on finding references to the fact that Clayton Publishing, who first published Astounding Science Fiction (under the name Astounding Stories of Super-Science) also published a host of other Pulp magazines. I haven't been able to find, however, what these were. Does anyone know? Are there any good sources about Clayton publishing and what it produced apart from astounding?
The battle is a random encounter in a stone temple filled with traps. Both combatants use only the paraphernalia they used in their respective films.
