Is it possible to extend current WiFi SSID with an Access Point?

Hello. I bought a Netgear WAX610 Wireless Access Point that I put in my upstairs.
I can set it up with a SSID easy - but doing so, my devices keep switching back and forth and its quite bothersome as the AP signal is weak downstairs and my devices sometimes chooses to go with that one.

I do have a cat6 cable pulled upstairs and plugged into the AP, but it doesnt seem to extend my wifi without Me creating a separate SSID than from my router. Is this possible to fix? And if so, did I get the wrong device perhaps?

TLDR: I just want the AP to extend my current wifi signal via a ethernet connection.

Thanks all.

Standalone U6-LR resets WiFi SSID after a power cycle

Just got a new U6-LR to replace an older Ubiquiti AP that I had. I was trying to set it up without installing the controller on a local computer (really don't want to install Java on my workstation).

I can setup the AP with the Android phone app fine, but after unplugging it and plugging it back in it the AP needs to be reconfigured, it's reverting back to it default SSID. The indicator light on top is blue, but it does not keep my configuration after a power cycle.

Do I need to install the controller software to configure the AP permanently? If I do I guess I'll create a VM and get it installed there.

Edit: I went with Ubiquiti again because my first AP was rock solid. I set it up maybe 5 years ago and then never had to touch it again. It never once went down and never gave me issues. I'm replacing it because unfortunately my EdgeRouter PoE gave up the ghost a couple weeks ago and the old AP was passive POE. Wanted something with active POE because I have a non-ubiquiti POE switch, so here I am!

Can a WiFi station be connected to more than one SSID at once?

Wired ethernet is a bounded medium, so it makes sense that if you only have one ethernet interface/port on your station, it can only connect to one L1 network. But with WiFi, it's unbounded so you could (at least in theory) be associated to more than one SSID/L1 network at once.

However, I've never seen the above (1 radio connected to a plurality of SSIDs) done before. Is there a reason for this? I've never seen an operating system allow you to do this, so I'm assuming there's something obvious I'm not thinking of.

Maybe another way to ask this question: What would happen if a single station had more than one WiFi card/radio? Would it permit you to connect to two SSIDs simultaneously?

If I change my ISP do I need to update my routers wifi networks (SSID)?

I recently switched my ISP, and upon setting up my new modem it asked me to create a new WiFi network to connect to. I thought this was odd because I was under the impression I could just keep using the same SSID.

And checking my Routers Setup page, it’s only showing my previous SSIDs in both their respective 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ on my network map.

So now I have three different SSID and all of them work. But the new SSID I set up is significantly slower (80mbps vs 220mbps download speed).

So was there a point for me to create a new SSID when switching ISPs?

And how come the new SSID I created isn’t showing up on my routers network map? Where is it even connecting to?

Any help would be great, thanks!

UniFI on 3 floors, which settings to use? Same SSID on the 3 WiFI-AP or different name? Mesh or no mesh? AP group or no group?

Hi,

I am in a house with concrete walls on 3 levels plus an 800 square meter garden around it.

Currently my hardware is the following

First level: UDM with WiFi enabled

Second level: NanoHD connected with Ethernet

Third level: nothing

Garden (near garage): ACPro connected with Ethernet

I created 4 WiFi SSID with different names, they are in the same AP group (group ALL AP's) and in the same network (LAN).

Overall I am satisfied, just few IoT not working perfectly and some spots in the house with my Laptop/W10 has weak signal.

The few IoT and the LAptop ( in some spots) it should connect to other AP but always connects to the weaker AP for some strange reason.

What do you suggest I change?

LPT: When you buy a new WiFi router don’t login into the new network on all your devices; Changed the new router’s SSID and password to match the old one and everything will just work.

I set both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz to the same name and let the device choose which it prefers. Mileage may vary on older routers.

Also, set your 5Ghz 2.4Ghz to NOT support 802.11b since it will slow down the network.

Edit: as others have pointed out, it should be the 2.4Ghz protocol that you’d configure to disallow 802.11b.

Recommendation on a Wifi AC with VLAN per SSIDs

I’m finding it tough to compare Wifi APs that meet this set of requirements.

  • supports at least 2 2.4Ghz SSIDs connected to 2 VLANs
  • supports at least 2 5Ghz SSIDs connected to 2 VLANs
  • VLANs supported in Access Point mode
  • no PoE or at least comes with a power adapter.
  • covers 1500sqf (if less I could get two)
  • supports over 40 devices
  • I don’t need crazy speeds but would be happy with at least 100

The vlan part is what I’m having a tough time finding. Seems a lot of the AC are actually routers which will VLANs until you put them into AP mode which has virtually no features. I’m not opposed to running OpenWRT either, but would be nice not to have to run that.

How do i refine that function to only scan a set channel and furthermore search for a specific SSID?

Disabled WiFi and hidden SSID

I'm using my existing router and disabled all 12 SSIDs on my T-mobile 5G gateway, as confirmed by the web portal's statistics page. But, as others here have noted, a network scan shows a hidden SSID on the 5Ghz band, with a Nokia ID and a MAC address identical to the gateway's, except for a "75AA" suffix. This SSID disappears when I turn the gateway off and comes back when I turn it on. If I try to log on to it with the gateway's SSID and password, I'm not able to connect. Does anyone know what purpose this unreachable network serves, and if there's any way to truly shut off the gateway's WiFi?

Ethernet connection named itself after my Wifi SSID, can I fix this to avoid confusion?

A few days ago I got my new PC, an Intel NUC. At first it wouldn’t connect to my Ethernet so I went ahead and connected it to my wifi temporarily. (I just needed to reboot my Ethernet over Powerline adapter and then it worked fine). I turned Wifi off but now the Ethernet adapter has named itself after my SSID that I connected it to. The SSID is NCC1701D 5GHz, (yes I’m a nerd.) If I click on change adapter settings, it will only let me rename the β€œEthernet 3” part and not the SSID part. Since wifi is off I think I am correctly connecting through the Ethernet, am I not? How can I fix this?

How to change SSID on ZigBee bridge? Orbi router used for WiFi

I have set up a ZigBee bridge with one temp/humidity sensor at my house. Now I need to move it to a different location where SSID is different.

The environment is an Orbi mesh router which merges 2.4 and 5 Ghz wifi bands.

I think one approach is to set up at some distance from nearest Orbi so 2.4 is stronger than 5 Ghz.

I think another key is to turn off mobile data on my phone.

Any other ideas? I guess maybe figure out how to adjust power of 5 Ghz in router but I hope to avoid that hassle.

Wifi Extender Performance with Different SSID

Hi Everyone, Either I am terrible at searching or cant find anyone who wants to accomplish similar to what I am doing.

My wifi doesn’t reach my detached garage. I understand wifi extenders suck and greatly reduces speed and reliability.

However, I only want wifi in my garage for my Wyze cam, smart switch and smart garage opener. I do not need wifi for any other uses in my garage

If I just setup an extender with a different SSID, would the performance on my main network be unaffected or would it still be reduced ?

Thanks

Can your Wifi password be stolen if you try using it on the wrong SSID

Today I managed to get one of my old Windows tablets working again, and it had trouble finding my router's SSID. I initially tried connecting to a network Windows marked as a "hidden network" as I saw it had quite high signal strength. I thought perhaps as its software was out of date, it for some reason couldn't resolve the SSID's name.

It first prompted me to put the SSID name in, so I typed in what it would've been had it been the correct SSID. Then it asked for the password, which I typed in and immediately when I hit enter, it said the password was incorrect. This of course means that SSID was almost definitely not my own router.

Let's assume that the hidden SSID had malicious intent. Would it be possible for that access point to snoop for any failed SSID name/password attempts and then use those details to try connecting to my own router? I do not suspect any wrongdoing, I just want my mind at ease going forward!

Thanks!

Looking for recommendations for wifi smart blubs , that don't drop on SSID shared 2.4Ghz/5Ghz

I've tried the below smart bulbs, work fine when they work. They have to be power-cycled every 24-48hrs (they drop off the wifi). It seems this is a known issue, but TP-Link doesn't have a fix for it. Anyone have experience with bulbs that don't have this issue? I'm keeping the creation of a seperate SSID on 2.4Ghz-only as a last resort.
