Shit is flying EVERYWHERE. ALL DIRECTIONS. It's fucking madness. It's so loud. I went outside and couldn't shut the door because it was so powerful. It blew my glasses off and I chased it about 10 feet before it flew off the edge of the balcony. I'm not kidding.

Last weekend, I had this fantastic Japanese-Style Afternoon Tea at a cafe in Ginza, Tokyo. Lowest level of the box was Savory, middle was Japanese Wagashi Sweets, and top was Japanese-Style Western Sweets. So extremely photogenic!

How is life around Hachioji and other outer/western wards of Tokyo?

Good Morning!

My Japanese wife and I currently live in Vancouver. We aren't too sure about having and raising kids here. I lived and attended high school in Tokyo 20 years ago. It is to this day still the highlight of my life.

I would like to be near but not in Tokyo, if we were to make the move in the next couple of years.

I'd like to hear from other locals what the life is like in and around Hachioji and other outer wards of Tokyo.

What are the house prices like? How about renting a 150-200 square meter store?
How vibrant is the area in terms of festivals and other community events?

I think south of Tamagawa near Setagaya would still be too urban for us. I also think western-more areas of Tokyo could be more earthquake proof.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm looking for.

We will potentially open up a small cafe/restaurant.
We want to live in a house.
We really value feeling of community.
We can drive but would like to have easy access to a major hub like Shinjuku under an hour or an hour tops via rail.
Having local and foreign tourist interested in high quality coffee and exotic foods would make things easier.

Does what I'm looking for exist in this area or anywhere else?

Found in western Tokyo, smells intensely of artificial grape flavoring. It’s currently in bloom, though the smell is starting to get less strong. There’s another instance of this plant nearby that I’ve seen large round yellow fruits on, though there might be a different plant under it in that case.
