Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jai is a chance of doubling the AFL’s Serong population at next month’s draft.
But he’s “nothing like Caleb.”
Instead, Gippsland Power staff think he’s one of the most versatile players to walk through the doors in the past decade.
Standing at 192cm, 13cm taller than Caleb, Jai has shown an ability to play as a deep forward, inside midfielder and even as a tall defender.
He also won the running vertical leap (96cm) at this year’s NAB League testing day.
“He’s nothing like Caleb,” Gippsland Power coach Rhett McLennan said.
“He’s a Jack Gunston type. Plays half-forward, he’s got really good goal sense but he’s got the capacity to move up into the midfield.
“He’s shown an aptitude in every spot. His capacity to play a number of key roles is one of the attractive attributes he holds.
“Jai’s game is his athleticism. His agility is elite. His vertical leap is elite and his speed is quite good as well. From an athletic standpoint, he’s definitely got Caleb covered.”
And according to McLennan, what some may see as Serong’s biggest question mark could actually prove his making.
Victoria’s COVID lockdowns mean the 18-year-old didn’t play a competitive game last year and managed seven NAB league matches this season but it’s not expected to cruel his development.
“He’ll be more of a slow burn in his development whereas Caleb hit the ground running,” McLennan said.
“The biggest attractor is he hasn’t played enough football over the past two years.
“He’s also never been able to do a pre-season because he’s a cricketer as well for Geelong Grammar. His capacity for growth in a full time football environment is huge in my opinion.”
Gippsland talent operations lead Scott McDougal said there’s “been some love” from AFL clubs for the Warragul product, sparking hopes of a Serong reunion.
“I think he’s our best chance to get on a list this year and he deserves to be that player after all the work he’s done,” he said.
“He’s a real specimen as an athlete. But he’s first and foremost a footballer.
“He’s right up there with one of the most versatile players I’ve seen in my ten years.”
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
