Just found out about warmlines. Has anyone used these? Lines you can call to talk to someone else who has been through stuff, and they aren’t crisis lines, you just call and talk. Just curious if anyone has had experience with this, was it helpful? Warmlines.org was where I was looking.

How is a warmline supposed to help?

I am asking this question as honestly as possible because I think I might be doing something wrong.

I need therapy for my PTSD. I am aware of this. I am not taking any psych meds and my psychiatrist supports this - but also thinks I really need therapy.

The waitlists in my city start at 6 months and go up to 18. I have been told I might need to wait longer because I work full time and night/weekend appointments are harder to get.

When I asked what I am supposed to do with potentially waiting a year or more for help, my insurance company gave me a warmline. I have called it threee times. Each time I felt worse than before I called.

If I wanted to talk to empty air and not have a response of any kind, I could talk to myself.

β€œYou can say anything you want.”

Mmmkay I wasn’t aware anyone was restricting what I could say. It doesn’t make me feel better to say how awful and alone I feel only to stop talking and it’s just dead air.

How is that supposed to help? Am I doing it wrong?

Talked about the warmline already buuuut

This guys voice it was so trusting I really wanted to trust him.And - I don’t trust it isn’t my thing . I self harm a lot to show myself concern / affection but that really good human did that for me.

I just remember near the end of our conversation I was twirling my charger and listening intently .. trying to take his words to heart. I want to believe I can’t open up . But I did.

Now my brain doesn’t want to remember what was said and wants to tell me it was a useless cal but it wasn’t . He said things I deserved to hear and imma remember eventually. That is all.

In case anyone else doesn't know about "warmlines": an option between "nothing" and hotlines when you just need to talk to someone for a bit and you don't know who to call

https://screening.mhanational.org/content/need-talk-someone-warmlines/

I struggled with self-doubt about whether my problems are "bad enough" to deserved to someone so I have only ever called hotline a few times.

I managed to find a warmline earlier for the first time this week when I really needed one. I just needed to talk to someone on the phone for a few minute but my anxiety was paralyzing me from making a call to a friend. It really turned the rest of my day around.

It's basically an in-between option for when you need to talk but haven't reached "this is a medical emergency". They'll encourage you to call a hotline if that is an appropriate next step, but otherwise they provide a listening ear with someone who isn't typically a professional therapist or counselor but has been trained for the line.

Calling warmlines has helped me through some rough spots. Call and speak with another person for about 10 to 20 minutes about what you're going through. Here is a list of websites that list warmlines. I've called many of these myself, and if you're in a spot consider giving one of these numbers call

I wish someone had told me about warmlines sooner. They are free. Generally may want you to call if you are in that state. Some don't mind what state you are calling from and they won't even ask you.

When you call they probably won't ask you your name. I get a mix of people. Some I have deep conversations with, some are more superficial. Many of these line have suggestions of where to find further support, etc.

If you do have a bad conversation, don't be discouraged! You can call another one. And take it easy, calling a warmline is talking to another human being, so the conversations can very from call to call.

Warmline resource

Today was one of the hardest days of my life but I used a Warmline and I feel way better off than if I didn’t. For those that don’t know, it’s a non-emergency line you could call if you are emotionally distressed.

Often times we don’t talk openly about our problems and for some something like this might help. I highly recommend it, the counselors are very nice and will listen to you. There’s a stigma about needing mental help but we should normalize reaching out when you need help.

I use this from time to time and figured If just sharing this with the KF community might help someone’s day become better than it’s definitely worth talking about.

I used the Peer Run Warmline located in San Francisco: (855) 845-7415

There are many other numbers that might be more local if you google

If you are feeling suicidal or have suicidal thoughts please call: 1-800-273-8255

This is for the US, If any international best friends would like to comment with their country’s numbers please do so!
