It only became clear in hindsight, but when West Coast blew ladder-leading Fremantle away with seven goals to one in the first quarter of the monster western derby late in 2015, it was the moment that marked the beginning of the end for the Dockers’ greatest era.

Fremantle entered that hugely hyped round 20 match, pitting first versus second, two and a half games clear on top of the ladder with a commanding 16-2 record. They went 2-4 for the rest of the season including a preliminary final exit, and fell off a cliff the next year. The Dockers haven’t played finals since and the Eagles haven’t missed the finals since.

Because derby rivalries are as much about fan bases as the angst between the clubs themselves, the greatest victories are often the ones that damage your adversary the most.

The Saturday night special in the final round of the 2003 season remains criminally underrated and probably deserves to stand as the greatest derby of them all. Playing in the final round of the season brought the consequences into sharp focus, with the WA clubs among five teams locked on 52 points. The Eagles were in fifth and the Dockers eighth.

By the time Fremantle had won by 14 points on the back of three Paul Medhurst goals, the Dockers had cost their rivals a top-four finish and home final by dumping them all the way to seventh, while jumping to fifth themselves to book their first ever final in for Subiaco Oval. Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir played in that game, kicking two goals, and football boss Peter Bell starred with 27 touches.

While we’re a long way from the final round, they now have the chance to stick the knife in again. Leigh Matthews famously said 20 years ago: “If it bleeds, we can kill it.” The Eagles are bleeding and the Dockers’ task is to kill them off.

If Freo could drop West Coast to 3-4 with a poor percentage and long injury list, the Eagles’ top-four and premiership chances might be wounded irreparably.

Like in 2015, the fuller significance of what happens in Sunday’s western derby might not become clear for some time. The purple army will hope it’s time, at last, for another changing of the baton.

*: Un haeng il chi: 言行一致, a four-character idiom (sajaseong-eo) that is usually read together as a meaningful expression. The Chinese equivalent is Chengyu - sajaseongeo is very similar in that many expressions are derived from Chengyu, but there are Korean-specific hanja expressions as well. Unhaengilchi means ‘to act in accordance to what you say,’ or to be a person of your word, basically. ‘Ilchi’ (same hanja) is also a Korean word that means “match up,” so even though they repeat the ilchi part, the word can also stand alone.

The funeral director was asking us what we think Mum should wear in her casket.

Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.

The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:

"What's sarong with that?"

I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).

His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.
