A list of puns related to "Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe"
“An Oxford graduate takes up a job in a mental asylum, only to discover that the "revolutionary" new treatments are inhumane, and that there is more going on than meets the eye.”
Directed by Brad Anderson, this one belongs to the better half of his repertoire.
Sometimes it suffers a little from pacing issues, however the stellar cast, the eerie atmosphere and the story itself more than make up for it.
If it didn’t suffer constant comparison from Shutter Island, it would maybe be more appreciated.
I know that for me, it’s a solid 7.5/10.
Have you watched it? What’s your take?
Could someone verify that in the mid 1800's Virginia Dialect the following pairings would rhyme?
Daunted - Enchanted
Woods - Floods
Rode - God
Heaven - Even
Just ran across this with one of my English students.
Thanks in advance!

This guy graduated from West Point with Henry Clay's son (killed at Buena Vista) and George Turner, who retired and took up farming in Harper's Ferry, where he managed to get shot by John Brown's gang.
They would have been there at the Academy on the famous (apocryphal but good enough) occasion when Edgar Allen Poe showed up for parade drill stark naked.
This class went on to fight in the Black Hawk War, where they were very young officers and may well have come in contact with raw recruits like Abraham Lincoln, and then went on to have a major part in the Mexican War.
The students in this class were in their fifties when the Civil War broke out, so they were naturally involved in many command positions. Ammen took over for Bull Nelson after Nelson died. Of the West Point class of 1831, 12 served in the Civil War. 9 on the Union side, 3 for the CSA. One of the ones who served on the Confederate side was Albert Miller Lea, who famously captured a Union ship only to find his son, who had been fighting for the Union, mortally wounded inside.
It appears to have been a small class, and I wonder if it was in part because these are the children who would have been very young during 1816, the Year Without a Summer. They also would have been alive, but too young to understand, during the War of 1812 and the Great Earthquake of 1812. They would have been in their 30s during the religious revivals of the 1840s, and they would have been witness their entire lives to the growing tensions over slavery -- some of them served in Kansas, some in Texas.
It's certainly true that the West Point graduates from this period, and therefore the children from that time, saw more than their share of war. If you had been born in 1810, you would have spent your whole life within possibly the most violent period North America has ever known (that part's just my opinion, of course).
None of this is earth-shattering, just intriguing. This is my first post here, and I'm really looking forward to finding people to discuss the Civil War with! Thanks so much for reading.
In the wiki page of Virginia Clemm, there is a "References in music section", where there is no mention of a song titled "Virginia Clemm" by the artist "Statues in motion".
It is the first song in this album.

When I was a student at UVA, in part of the historical tour, they tell people that while Poe was a student there, he amassed some gambling debt, so like other students who were in big trouble, he was forced to make a trek to Monticello to receive a talking to by the old man himself, Thomas Jefferson.
However, my own research is split on whether the two of them ever met, let along did Poe receive a lecture from Thomas Jefferson.
Here are some links: This one says there is no evidence that the two men ever met.
Another article says that Poe visited with Jefferson during one of the former president's Sunday dinners.
Thanks.
- Morgan Freeman y E´Dena Hines.
- Franklin D. Roosevelt y Eleanor Roosevelt.
- Charles Darwin y Emma Wedgwood.
- Angelina Jolie y James Haven.
- Albert Einstein y Elsa Loewenthal.
- Woody Allen y Soon-Yi.
- Edgar Allan Poe y Virginia Eliza Clemm.
- Sergei Rachmaninov y Natalia Sátina.
- Igor Stravinsky y Yekaterina Nosenko.
- Johann Sebastian Bach y Maria Barbara Bach.
So Edgar Allen Poe married his 13-year-old first cousin. If you read the Wikipedia entry for her you can see that scholars don't agree on whether or not the marriage was scandalous, nor do they even agree on whether or not the two were earnestly lovers for more like brother sister.

what gives? Were they passionate lovers? Was this type of marriage seen as scandalous at the time?

My usual disclaimers:
I already mentioned these might not be weekly, but just reiterating that here. I’ll do my very best. Again, I’ll do my best!
For sensitive topics, I won’t be adding any snark or attempting to do much recapping past the general events. I feel that these topics are too important for me to try and interpret fully, so I will always suggest you watch conversations with topics concerning race relations, SA, abuse, etc. in the context of the show. I will indicate these if and when they appear.
To piggyback off of the last point, I am merely a recapper! I will do my best to put things in context of the show, but please remember that this is like playing telephone. I’m going to inadvertently put my own spin on things. If I say something on here that makes you really angry at the show or a contestant, I highly recommend you watch the full clip or read a different recap to make sure I am not unfairly presenting the events.
These will probably be long because I’m opinionated and have lots of commentary. I’ll always do a very brief TLDR at the beginning for those of you who don’t have time to read it all. For those of you who do, I hope these are worth the time!
TLDR:
We meet Clayton and the women. Clayton is nervous. We meet some of the women. There are nurses and pilots and relators. One woman (Salley) was previously engaged and today was supposed to be her wedding day. She approaches Clayton before the limos and tells him she’s not ready to be in love yet. He tries to give her a rose anyway, but she rejects it. The rest of the women pull up in the limo. Claire tells people she doesn’t like Clayton (actually, she says she “hates him”) and he sends her home before the rose ceremony. Teddi gets the first impression rose. At the ceremony, roses are given to Serene, Susie, Eliza, Rachel, Ency, Sarah, Kate, Cassidy, Elizabeth, Kira, Shanae, Sierra, Mara, Marlena, Genevieve, Melina, Gabby, Jill, Lyndsey, Hunter, and Tessa.
· We start with a scene shot by Clayton himself, who is going to tell his mom some “exciting news”. I’m assuming it’s that he’s the Bachelor.
· He tells her and she screams and clutches her chest. I hope she’s just excited and not having a cardiac episode.
· We see a trailer. I’m not going to recap this.
· Jesse introduces himself. “I was the B
... keep reading on reddit ➡Tuberculosis, also known as consumption, or "the red death," is a disease that causes patients to cough up, or, in the final stages, throw up, yes throw up blood.
Edgar Allan Poe lost many to TB, including his beloved child bride Virginia. In his story Ligeia, a male narrator loses wives to consumption, each of them rising from the dead in the appearance of Ligeia. In death, all of his wives looked the same, which, let's face it, Poppy and Mars have been accused of many times.
Could it be that Titanic is like Poe, trying to find that perfect female companion-- chasing a replacement for poor young Virginia-- relentlessly pursuing that prototype of "angelic, saintly quality" (as Poe often referred to women), though he knows all too well their dreaded fate? If not by TB, then by the consumption of death itself?
Poe often wrote of finding a warm and compassionate woman with whom he could enter that great night (implying that he would kill himself when his next lover died). He tried fruitlessly for years to find such a companion (to die with)-- perhaps with the sad and beautiful intention of recreating the sensation of the passionate, loving bond he felt with Virginia (to feel it one last time). Poor Edgar, as cruel fate would have it, ended up dying alone and delirious. It was as though he was a great ship of many qualities and fineries, designed with romance and innovation, headed for a disaster caused mainly by the symptoms (the tip of) his expansive, ineffably deep sorrow.
Finally, Edgar saw himself as he saw all other men: as a demon. As some of us know, p-o-p-p-y-i-s-g-o-d, and in the video Lowlife, she (a goddess, as Poe saw women), is hatched from the same egg as the devil. Poe felt that to live a good life, he had to be yolked with a woman, to check and balance his evil manly nature with the "fine constitution" of womankind (paraphrasing). Titanic, like the devil, is eating a banana from the passive position of his director's chair, viewing a scene of the demon who
