Der gewaltige Betrug, den Daniel Ortega bei den Wahlen am 7. November begangen hat, war schon seit geraumer Zeit bekannt. In gewisser Weise stellt sie den Höhepunkt der im Jahr 2000 unterzeichneten Vereinbarung zwischen Ortega und dem der Korruption beschuldigten Arnoldo Alemán dar, der damals Präsident von Nicaragua und Vorsitzender der Liberalen Partei war. Dieser Pakt ermöglichte es der Sandinistischen Nationalen Befreiungsfront (FSLN) und der Liberalen Partei, die Kontrolle über alle staatlichen Institutionen zu übernehmen, vor allem auch über den Obersten Wahlrat. Eine Änderung des Wahlgesetzes führte dazu, dass bei den Parlamentswahlen 2001 fast alle Sitze in der Nationalversammlung an die Sandinisten und die Liberalen gingen. Von diesem Moment an begann der Prozess der Degradierung der beginnenden Demokratie Nicaraguas, ein Prozess, der 1990 seinen Höhepunkt erreichte, als Violeta Chamorro ihren überraschenden Sieg über Comandante Daniel Ortega errang, der nach fast einem Jahrzehnt interner Auseinandersetzungen mit den so genannten Contras an die Wahlurne gezwungen wurde.
Die Niederlage von 1990 und seine 15-jährige Abwesenheit von der Macht haben Ortega und seine sandinistischen Genossen gelehrt, dass sie die öffentlichen Institutionen beherrschen und die Wirtschaft ein wenig öffnen müssen, wenn sie an der Macht bleiben wollen. Der zweite Zyklus der Ortega-Ära begann 2006, als er bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen triumphierte, weil die Liberalen, die Wahlmehrheit, sich in zwei Sektoren aufgespalten hatten: die Nicaraguanische Liberale Allianz und die Nicaraguanische Liberale Partei. Der ehemalige Guerillakämpfer schlüpfte durch diesen Spalt und baute dann das Gerüst auf, das es ihm ermöglichte, für immer im Präsidentenpalast zu bleiben.
Am Sonntag, dem 7. November, gab es keine Überraschungen. Zuvor hatten Daniel Ortega und seine Frau Rosario Murillo - eine Art Lady Macbeth - Cristiana Chamorro, die in den Umfragen führende Politikerin, inhaftiert. Dann kam die Verfolgung und Entführung der anderen sechs Präsidentschaftskandidaten. I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) has as its patron the Nicaraguan revolutionary Augusto César Sandino. In the mid-twenties, Sandino led the popular army that fought the presence of United States military forces in Nicaragua, becoming a symbol of Nicaraguan nationalism and Latin American anti-imperialist resistance. In 1934, Sandino was captured and shot by the National Guard, a police force then commanded by Anastasio Somoza García. Two years later, Somoza engineered the overthrow of President Juan Bautista Sacasa and took over the government of Nicaragua, installing an autocratic dictatorship. Supported by the U.S. government, the Somoza family would remain in charge of Nicaragua until 1979, leading a regime marked by human rights abuses, repression of trade unionists and social movements, unbridled exploitation of the working class, and absolute subservience to U.S. foreign policy.
In 1961, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) was founded, composed of various leftist movements and organizations. The initiative brought together several exponents of the Nicaraguan left, and its founding members included names like Carlos Fonseca, Silvio Mayorga, Tomás Borge, and Casimiro Sotelo. Initially strongly influenced by the student movement, the organization's main centers of activity were the University of Leon and the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN) in Managua. The movement gradually expanded with the adhesion of representative groups from other sectors of society, gaining a more popular character. In the early 1970s, the FSLN began its first military campaigns.
The weak government response to the earthquake that devastated Managua in December 1972, killing more than 10,000 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless, fueled opposition to Anastasio Somoza Debayle's government. Much of the international humanitarian aid destined for the earthquake victims was diverted by the Nicaraguan dictatorship. The reconstruction of downtown Managua was neglected, while the main contractors hired to rebuild the buildings were linked to the Somoza family, extending the clan's control over the economy of the Nicaraguan capital. The dictator's personal wealth was estimated at 400 million dollars as early as 1974. Popular discontent with the dictatorship influenced the growth of popular support for the FSLN, which began to mount more assertive operations.
