A list of puns related to "Vinaya Pitaka"
Buddha said trans rights.
Also been reading about Buddhist practice a bit lately. Think it might be a path for me, any other folks have experience with Buddhism and Buddhist communities?
There are 227 restrictions for bhikkhus but 311 for bhikkhunis!
Hello Buddha Reddit community - I am looking for a translation of the Vinaya Pitaka. I am a layman who has been practicing for the last 3 years, taken my refuge vows, and read an array of various texts. Anyways, I am looking for a publication that is all-encompassing, accessible and effective for an English speaker (hence, the translation component), and also one in book form.
Thank you in advance
Edit: I am a bit surprised that this can be a controversial post, based on the ups and downs of the votes. (62% upvoted) I suspect those who downvoted just saw the picture below and didn't read. Read please. Or else don't simply vote. People who read said this is good.
Why study the history of the evolution of Buddhism? Why not just stick to the suttas and vinayas and not learn about history?
When people ask questions about the current forms of Buddhism, it makes most sense only when one has a rough idea at least of the history of how they arise. It also could affect the amount of faith one would place in this or that form of Buddhism one sees today.
There was a race of people called the Aryans who are likely the people who originated the Indo-European languages including Sanskrit, Pali (Malay and Singhalese borrowed many words from Pali), English, Germanic languages, Latin etc. Yes, these are the same Aryans which the Nazi identified themselves with, and now the terminology to call them is Indo-Iranian.
In ancient India, before the Buddha's time, there was Zoroastrianism. In that religion, Ahuras are the good gods, Daevas are the bad gods. Karen Armstrong in her books described that it's because the Aryans who migrated into northern India was a bunch of raiders, pillagers, nomads. They prefer war, and their gods are the daevas. The ones being stolen from are the agriculturists who worked hard on the land and cattle.
It's only later on that the Aryans settled down and established the caste system in India with them at the top castes, and the natives of India at the bottom rank. So their gods became the devas of Buddhism and the opposition ahuras became the asuras. A role reversal of the devas being the good gods now and the asuras being the demons. For the secularists, do note that even with such historical trace of the evolution of devas, there could still be possible that there does exist such beings as gods and demons, which is a standard faith for Buddhists.
Brahmanism is the mainstream religion of India back in Buddha's time, along with 6 heretical teachers. They represent the doctrines of Jainism, Agnosticism, Fatalism, Amoralism, Materialism, Eternalism.
Hinduism evolves out of Brahmanism's interaction with Buddhism, and they absorbed the figure of the [Buddha into one of the avatars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gautama_Buddha_in_Hinduis
... keep reading on reddit β‘It is my understanding that in modern Buddhism the PΔli canon β despite universal recognition as the oldest scriptural canon within Buddhism β only retains pride of place in the TheravΔda tradition, whilst Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism have their own canons, is that so? If it is, how greatly do these canons differ from the PΔli canon and one another and how are these contradictions dealt with?
Back to the PΔli canon itself, is there a particular translation which you prefer above others? It does not need to be in English, a good German translation would be of utility to me as well.
There was a post about monks misbehaving and I thought one of the main problems was the general publics lack of understanding the Vinaya to hold their local monks accountable. If you think they are misbehaving you should not be scared to walk up to him/her and ask them to clarify their behaviour in reference to the Vinaya. Hera are some of the 227 Laws expected of monks, there are another Set for nuns.
Read the entire Vinaya laws in English at https://suttacentral.net/pitaka/vinaya

Hello everyone!
I have been immersed into Buddhism for several years now, but I haven't read any Buddhist scriptures or texts yet, apart from commentaries and books, not sacred scriptures, about Buddhism. I recently decided to start reading directly what the early Buddhists themselves wrote, or in other words, the sacred scriptures of Buddhism. But I realized there are so many scriptures, like a whole library is needed probably, and it is not possible or clear, at least via the Internet, to know fully what all these scriptural texts are. The Tripitaka or The Pali Canon is said to be the main one if I got it right, but even the Pali Canon is composed of other books or texts, and here is where I need help. I need someone who is knowledgeable enough about the subject to tell me what are, in detail, the Buddhist scriptures, or at least refer me to fiable source where I could find the right information. I want to know what scripture I should read first. And if possible, where I can find these scriptures (unedited) in English online, since I do not live in the Far East, where it is much easier to find such sacred books.
Thank you very much πππ Peace be with you all π

It starts out like a "guy walks into a bar joke" but it's actually really cool:
> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-sectarian_Buddhism#Teachings_of_earliest_Buddhism > Carol Anderson, following Lambert Schmithausen and K.R. Norman, notes that the four truths are missing in critical passages in the canon,[114] and states: > > ... the four noble truths were probably not part of the earliest strata of what came to be recognized as Buddhism, but that they emerged as a central teaching in a slightly later period that still preceded the final redactions of the various Buddhist canons.[115] > >** The four truths probably entered the Sutta Pitaka from the Vinaya, the rules for monastic order. They were first added to enlightenment-stories which contain the Four Jhanas, replacing terms for "liberating insight".** From there they were added to the biographical stories of the Buddha:[93] > > It is more likely that the four truths are an addition to the biographies of the Buddha and to the Dhammacakkappavattana-sutta.[116] > > According to both Bronkhorst and Anderson, the four truths became a substitution for prajna, or "liberating insight", in the suttas[117][93] in those texts where "liberating insight" was preceded by the four jhanas.[118] According to Bronkhorst, the four truths may not have been formulated in earliest Buddhism, and did not serve in earliest Buddhism as a description of "liberating insight".[119] Gotama's teachings may have been personal, "adjusted to the need of each person."[118] > > This replacement was probably caused by the influence and pressures of the wider Indian religious landscape, "which claimed that one can be released only by some truth or higher knowledge."[95] >

Welcome link; ewk comment: ^(who?) I believe the appropriate phrase is "neerer neener neener, Zen came before Buddhism".
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
Personal background: For the longest time I've been a pessimist. Ever since around the age of sixteen, when, in a desperate search to answer why to the anxieties of my life and the shitty things the people around me were going through, I over-read everything from neuroscience that proved human free will false (Libbet experiments, unconscious biases, genetic factors in personality, etc) to hobbesian like studies into violent human nature in history and evolutionary psychology to post modernism, Nietzsche, and pessimists like Schopenhauer and Cioran and Ligotti to recent studies on catastrophic climate change. I've been in a state of deep negativity and hopelessness and fatalism, declaring life not only bleak but actively malignant for it's asymmetry in pain and pleasure (anti-natalism, Benatar), even actively praising and contemplating suicide. and sometimes testing myself.
One of the subjects I over-read was Buddhism, thinking it would help me from all the self-help industry around it, and yet I found it's bleak archives on it's analysis of Dukkha to contribute to my nihilism.
For if it's analysis of Samsara (the cycle of suffering driven by aversion, clinging, and misperception) and Dukkha (how all conditional phenomenon/impermanent things are unreliable for happiness and dependence) was correct, and yet, thanks to modern science, where we know that there is no supernatural phenomenon, and so there is no rebirth nor nirvana, why not then kill ourselves if the ultimate goal of such a religion, as it seemed to me, was renunciation of the material world?
Oh sure there was compassion in staying back and helping others break free from the cycle of rebirth, but then the goal was still the same, rejection of being here (I understand Mahayana had a change in perception with it's Samsara is Nirvana and Bodhisattva ideal, however it's compassion was ringed with supernatural salvationism and faith in order for it to become the Greater Vehicle, almost like Catholicism idolatry vs Christ's asceticism) .
Furthermore, the Buddha himself was often portrayed as a superhuman figure, and yet he did some odd things like: Encouraging a man to abandon his family, telling his followers to treat food like eating a child's flesh, and [accidentally convincing a group of monks to kill themselves](https://www.wisdomlib.org/buddhism/b

The Story Of Ananda And Pakati - BUDDHA STORY
This is the Story of "Ananda & The Woman at The Well". There are multiple variations of this story, I believe however this variation has root from either the Vinaya or the Sutta Pitakas. There is a detailed variation of The story within a Mahayana text called The Sardulakarnavadana, where she falls in Love with Ananda & has her mother cast a spell of Love Magic upon him. She tempts him to go to her house (Note, Ananda as a bhikkhu swore an oath of celibacy. Though He is known to have been quite attractive), & she prepares to lay with him, though Ananda breaking free from the spell of temptation via requesting The Lord Buddha for assistance the seal of temptation became broken, & Ananda exited her house unstained & reported the matter to The Buddha. The woman (the version of Pakati in this variation) became embarrassed & felt that she had sinned therefore she sook Council from The Buddha. This version (from the Sardulakarnavadana) has her being ordained a bhikkhuni by both the Buddha & Ananda- as well the two Ananda & her becoming great friends & saw one another as siblings, though later in there days- went their separate ways. I also became aware of a separate rendition, or version, of this story- "Ananda & The Untouchable Girl at The Well" where in this version the girl is mentioned to be quite younger, & it is noted that there was a great mob gathering, As Ananda requested her for a pour of water, the crowd questioned him if he was delirious from his walking- by requesting something from a member of a lowly caste was considered taboo not to mention uncivil at that time (The caste system was well established). Though note that The Buddha himself as well his many followers by doctrine rejected the Caste system as well the un-equality of Man & Woman- as mentioned by the Cullavagga & The Bhikkhuni PΔαΉimokkha as contained in the SuttavibhaαΉ ga, a division of the Vinaya PiαΉaka derived in multiple renditions of Tipitaka cannon most notedly what is formed within The Pali Cannon. The crowd became concerned, though Ananda mentioned that upon the Buddha there is no Predestination of any kind, those who are destined to achieve & those who are destined to fail, those who are destined to be of the high standard & those who are destined to be of the lowly & the poor. You are how You may make Yourself based upon Yo

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
When I got home, they were still there.
