A list of puns related to "Veterinary Dental"
As the title says. I've always been very happy with AVG's care and I've had bad experiences at other vets, so I'm hesitant to switch. But pricing has become insane and it's time to consider an alternative. Are there any high quality vets in the area you recommend that don't price gouge? It seems their pricing has skyrocketed since they moved to the corner property on the street. Thanks!
Our dog needs some urgent dental work done and our vet is currently booking for mid January (!). Our vet is sending the contact for a vet that might be able to help, but I was wondering if any of you know of vets offices that offer dental care that may have space before Christmas?
I'm willing to take the day off and drive quite a ways if needed, if we can get it done quicker.
In the meantime he is on some sweet pain meds and antibiotics and enjoying the wet food :)
Thanks!
ETA - we are on the cancellation list at our vet, but they only do dental work once a week and highly suggested we look elsewhere to try and get it fixed faster.
ETA2 - For anyone else looking, all the vets I called to the north and west (Guelph, Aurora, Newmarket, Etobicoke) seem to be booking at least 2 to 3 months in advance, some are 4 months! Try looking east. The first vet I called in Scarborough, with very good reviews, had space in just a couple weeks.
For those of you in need, a schedule of clinics can be found on their website:
Anyone have a Dental/Oral surgery specialist they would recommend? I have an elderly dog with a heart murmur and a weak kidney. My Vet said he needs oral surgery but does not feel comfortable doing it.
It's been awhile since I've paid for a dental procedure on a dog, but my Mom just had a bad experience (maybe - please weigh-in!) and I got a puppy in July so it's only a matter of time before I'll be in the same shoes.
Last week my Mom took her Min Pin (12 years old) into the vet for a dental, expecting some extractions. They gave her a quote that ranged from $600 - $2,800 depending on time spent with a line specifically stating $300 per minute for extractions. They ended up extracting 9 teeth and the bill was about $2,200.
My Mom was really upset, although she acknowledged it was her own fault for not asking more questions about the total. She expected it would be much lower. She barely has the money to cover the expense so while I agree that she should have requested more clarity up front, I can sympathize with her and would like to try to avoid the same fate in the future.
Does this sound like a normal amount for a dental on an older dog? If not, will you please recommend places you take your pets for dental procedures?
Thank you very much, Indy!
All,
βBased on feedback I've received over the last year, we're going to run the MOS/Duty Threads back in 2021, providing a ~3 year update since the last round.
βThe MOS Discussion Threads are meant to be enduring threads where individuals with experience or insight in to particular CMFs or MOSes can give advice and tips. If you have any MOS resources, schools, etc, this would be a great place to share them. The previous series were fairly popular. They are referenced around reddit on a regular basis and many of them are first page google results when searching for information.
Threads on reddit are not archived - and can continue to be commented in - until 6 months. Each week I will keep the full listing/links to all previous threads in a mega-list below, for ease of reference. At the end of the series I will go back and ensure they all have completely navigable links. /USMCBoot has also run a similar 'Megathread' Series, and I will be linking to the equivalent CMF in each main thread, just for anyone looking to compare.
If you have specific questions about these MOSes, please feel free to ask here, but know that we are not forcing or re-directing all questions to these threads -- you can, and are encouraged, to still use the WQT. This isn't specifically an 'AMA', although if people would like to offer themselves up to answer questions, that would be great. A big "Thank You" to everyone who is willing to answer questions about the MOSes in question.
These only work with your participation and your feedback.
Common questions / information to share would include the followingβ
Day to Day Life
"What's a deployment like?"
Career Advancement/Growth Opportunities
Speed of Promotion
Best Duty Station for your MOS
Any 'tips' for MOS success
β The idea is to go week-to-week for the MOS Series, following the same order as the previous Megathread Series, and then do the Duty Stations after.
MOS Megathread Series -- CMF 63, 64, 65, 66 -- Dental, Veterinary, Medical Specialist, Nurse Corps -- 63A, 63B, 63D, 63E, 63F, 63H, 63K, 63M, 63N, 63P, 63R, 64A, 64B, 64C, 64D, 64E, 64F, 64Z, 640A, 65A, 65B, 65C, 65D, 65X, 66B, 66C, 66E, 66F, 66G, 66H, 66N, 66P, 66R, 66S, 66T

What the organization is:
Vida travels to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala to provide free medical, dental, and veterinary care to rural communities that donβt have access to them. Itβs a really hands on experience where youβre actually doing things under physician, dentist, and vet supervision !
Follow @ Vida.ucr and fill out the form in their bio to join + get more information !
Hello!
I have a small (8-11 lb) older (10-11 yrs) but healthy dog that needs dental work. Iβm very anxious/paranoid that he will die on the table under anesthesia. Iβve gone through a ton of articles, I know that the chance of it happening is very small and they have a ton of tests to ensure the best chance. Logically it all makes sense and I have to do it for his health but I canβt stop worrying.
So Iβm looking for a vet that can ease my fears, talk me through the process, run all of the tests and most importantly make sure he will be taken care of and have the best chance of surviving the procedure.
If anyone has any recommendation or even clinics to avoid please let me know! Thank you!
Any good recommendations that wonβt totally break the bank?
Came home after a few days visiting family, left my pups at home, and upon return it appears my oldest dog has a tooth sticking out sideways. Need to visit a veterinary dentist. Any recommendations?
Im going to my first continuing ed/seminar. It will be one full day on dentistry in the veterinary field with the first half of the day lecture and the second half a wet lab focused on dental radiographs. My question....do I wear scrubs or street clothes?? If there was no wet lab I would just where normal clothing...but Im really not sure what I should do. Any advice would be appreciated since this is my first time learning anything outside of the workplace.
My parents have always had a 'just an animal' attitude about our cat. He has never had any sort of dental care, and has only been to the vet for neutering/shots after he was born, and for an infected abscess around a year ago. His diet has always been dry kibble, cream, and occasional treats/tuna/meat/etc.
Basically I'm wondering what I can do to make him more comfortable in his twilight years. He doesn't have any obvious issues and is still very active, but does have some sore areas on his back (arthritis I presume), very mild stress-related hair loss from having to go to the vet for his abscess (he's scared of strangers), and I assume he faces dental soreness as well.
What can I do as a broke/busy college student to increase his quality of life as he gets old?
I'm in the Medical District, so not somewhere 30 minutes away from here, ideally. :P
I think my rat terrier mix might have some dental issues, so it's time to get established with a local vet, but choosing one is so difficult!

Hi vets!
I am a dentist (of humans) and noticed tonight that my cat appears to never have lost his deciduous canines. His adult canines are fully erupted (as far as I could tell), but his deciduous canines are still present. The permanent canines are distal to the deciduous ones but seem to be in direct contact with them. I tried to see if the deciduous canines were mobile, but they didn't seem to be (this was about the point when he lost patience with me and started to bite). My question is: is there any treatment indicated? Should the deciduous canines be extracted, or should they be left the way they are? I know what I would do if it were a human child, but they teach you surprisingly little about veterinary dentistry in dental school LOL. I managed to get some photos but he fought me a bit, I hope they are adequate. Anyways, any advice that you could give me and my little man would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'm interested in hearing from those who have had tumors removed by local vets. Ie; did they take wide enough margins. Also, are there any dental specialists here?
All,
As a follow-up based on our EOY Census and previous solicited comments, we're going to try running an MOS Discussion/Megathread Series, very similar to how we did the Duty Station Series. I'd also, again, like to thank everyone who participated.
The MOS Discussion Threads are meant to be enduring threads where individuals with experience or insight in to particular CMFs or MOSes can leave/give advice and tips. If you have any MOS resources, schools, etc, this would be a great place to share them.
The hope is that these individual threads can serve as 'megathreads' on the posts in question, and we can get advice from experienced persons. Threads on reddit are not archived - and can continue to be commented in - until 6 months. Each week I will keep the full listing/links to all previous threads in a mega-list below, for ease of reference. At the end of the series I will go back and ensure they all have completely navigable links

This is not to be an 'AMA', although if people would like to offer themselves up to answer questions, that would be great. A big "Thank You" to everyone who is willing to answer questions about the MOSes in question, but the immediate preference would be for informational posts. These are meant to be enduring sources of information.
I currently expect to lump Os and Ws in to the CMF discussions. Going forward if it would be better to split them (and I will most likely chop up the Medical Series), please voice that opinion. If there are many MOSes, but extremely tiny/small density (like much of the 12 Series), I'm going to keep it as one. Yes, I'm also going to keep codes like for Senior Sergeant for the MOS (ie the Zulus).
These only work with your participation and your feedback.
Common questions / information to share would probably include the following;
The idea is to go week-to-week, but I may leave the initial up for 2 weeks just to iron any kinks out, and garner attention.
So, again, willing to answer questions is great, but if there's any infor
