Spent my first Christmas entirely alone. Leading up to this Merry holiday my dog developed a uterine infection which I suspected. Went to the vet where they charged me $450 to tell me as much and then quote me $2000 more for surgery. Drove the next morning at 6 AM instead to an excellent vet in Mexico who charged $625 for the same procedure. An early Christmas miracle!
Cut to 4 AM last night, Christmas Eve into Day, and my post-op pup desperately needs to take a shit but can't from the anesthesia and pain of using her muscles to bear down.
Rushed to emergency vet. Told them I was 99.9% sure she just needed to take a dump, and give her an enema. Nope, she needed pre- and post eval x-rays and IV fluids. Then they tell me: "so she's backed up and needs an enema." I'm shocked.
Waited at the ER vet parking lot huddled in my car on a rainy night. Had to drive 2 miles to go pee because the vet wouldn't let anyone in due to Covid. Finally at 5:45 AM they said she pooped and she was good as new. Final cost was $663.42. Got home and went to bed at 7:40.
$663.42 for shit, literally.
All in all ~$1740 spent this week. Good thing I have no one to buy gifts for! (Except my dogs, they got them early.)

Hi, our dogs have been at the Vets more times than we can count this year. Our old Collie has been diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia & our young Jack has been diagnosed with another hip problem too - so as you can imagine our small country vet has been busy with our two - and I, being the ever worried dog mother I am, have absolutely bombarded them with questions and concerns... now, I thought it might be a good idea to get our vet a Christmas gift, she’s just had a baby boy so I’m thinking some nice things for baby and a treat for her too? And our poor vets receptionist who’s put up with so many of my phone calls might like some ear plugs so she can’t hear the phone but also something lovely in the form of chocolate and some body shop brilliance - is this wierd, should I, shouldn’t I? I’m very awkward and not knowing whether to do this or not is playing on my mind - my autism can sometimes blur what is and isn’t appropriate, and this is one of those times that I’m questioning...

Another day, another earnings report. Today we look at Chewy, an ecommerce retailer of pet food, toys, and budding insurance/veterinary service provider. 3 months ago I wrote a DD about their last earnings. Today we deal with their Q3 earnings report, covering August – October 2021. Last quarter, they guided for USD 2.20-2.22 bn in revenue (23-25% yearly growth, 2.3% quarterly growth) and USD 8.9-9.0 in annual revenue (implying Q4 guidance of USD 2.44bn at the midpoints).
After they reiterated annual guidance on the last call despite disappointing customer numbers, I think there is a good chance that they will fall short this time and have to slightly cut Q4 and annual guidance.
Chewy is a high-flying Covid stock that is down almost exactly 50% from its all time high. Some level of deceleration is clearly priced in, which is a risk for this play. However I believe their earnings report might disappoint for a couple of reasons.
App downloads and customer numbers
The biggest and most obvious problem Chewy is facing is their newly added customers. Last quarters additions of 300k fell well short of expectation. Chewy is currently facing a cliff, as they added more customers than ever all throughout 2020. Their comp for this quarter is 1.2 million, slightly less than the 1.6 million they compared to last quarter, but still a very impressive number. As many customers churn around the 1-year mark, they might have problems adding enough gross customers to offset their churn.

One indication for this is the decline in their app rankings, both on iOS and Android. Apps are commonly (not always) downloaded by NEW customers, so they are a decent proxy for new customer additions. For both platforms, rankings are much lower than they have been since early 2019. There is a particularly pronounced drop on Android, starting around August 1 this year and extending until the current day (even though there was a small recovery). Android is a comparatively important platform for Chewy: while iOS is more popular overall in the USA, Chewy has an approximately equal number of downloads between the two platforms.

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
I’ll go first.
I once worked for an animal hospital and the head veterinarian/owner would get into screaming matches with the other veterinarians and call them useless pieces of shit in front of everyone. She also never paid her bills on time. We had foreclosure notices on the front door monthly. She was $19,000 in debt with a pharmaceutical company and they wound up firing her as a client. She also stopped paying her monthly dues with the cremations company, and they fired her too. She brought her own freezer from home to use as a body freezer until she could find another cremations company that would accept her as a client (word got around quickly that doing business with her was a bad idea). I had clients calling me all day for weeks asking where their pet’s cremations were. I wasn’t even aware of the situation until a few weeks later when another vet tech spilled the tea. After I quit before Christmas, I guess the remaining employees that stayed were pissed off at her and quit too. Why? Because she sent everyone a mass email saying, “You are all a bunch of ungrateful bitches and you don’t deserve a Christmas bonus this year.” She lost her only 2 doctors, her practice manager, her receptionists—basically, everyone quit. It baffles me that her veterinary clinic is still open today.
Some cats have no desire to eat ribbons or yarn or anything like that. I'm starting with that statement, because that's what I knew of cats thanks to my previous cat. So when I saw advice about being careful with cats around string... I assumed it was because they can get themselves tangled in it.
That is not why.
Some cats EAT string (and yarn, ribbon etc). If this happens it is an emergency and veterinary attention is needed immediately.
Why?
Part of the string can get caught at the top of their digestive tract. The rest gets moved along... Meaning that eventually, it causes their intestines to become gathered up like ruffles around the stringy object, and that string can act like cheese wire on their insides.
This can be FATAL very quickly.
And they can get the stuff so quickly you wouldn't believe it. They are stealthy little hunters.
How did I learn that the risk isn't due to getting tangled? My 11 month old cat ate about ~60cm of yarn 3 weeks ago. I was finishing up a project, weaving in the ends of a knitted Christmas stocking and set aside a long bit to use for stitching on the name.
She was never unattended. This bears repeating and emphasis: I did not get up, walk away, leave the room, or play with the string with her. She was not alone with the scrap yarn.
Somehow, she managed to stealthily grab herself that long bit of yarn. I went to add the name and... Where's the yarn?
That's how we ended up in an emergency vet at 1am. We got lucky. She brought the yarn back up like a furball and the worst effects were that she felt a bit unwell for a day or two afterwards (had an anti-nausea injection from the vet to help). She's fine now, but she very well might not have been.
Please - be careful. They're fast and quiet and at this time of year, there tends to be a lot of stringy things lying around.
If they eat something stringy - act fast.
If they MIGHT have eaten it - act as though they have. Worst that happens is it costs a vet trip, but the alternative could cost their life.
I lost my baby of over 13 years on Christmas Day, just two days ago. My beautiful dachshund Ween was my soul dog. She was my husband’s soul dog too, and I feel so honored to have brought the two of them together. The sheer depth of our shared sadness is unbelievable.
Ween has been with me through every major milestone since I was a teenager. I’m now 30, and her big, thoughtful eyes bore witness to high school, college, and law school graduations. She watched my college boyfriend become my husband and she wore her Sunday best to our wedding (she insists that she was the bride). She and I met as a teenage girl struggling with mental health issues and a sassy little puppy ready to give that girl the kind of love that only a pet can. From our first day together to our last, our bond was unbreakable.
I’ve lost other pets in my life, but losing Ween feels like losing the best part of myself. My husband feels the same way. Ween was just so special, and she wasn’t one of those dogs who just loved everyone without question. She was always kind and ready for chin scratches from anyone who would give them, but she chose who she truly loved. It is such a privilege that she chose us.
Now that she is gone, my husband and I are struggling to see a way forward without her. Her medical history is not something I feel like laying out in great detail, but we spared absolutely no expense in giving her the best, happiest, healthiest life we could. We were thankfully successful until about two months ago when a confluence of multiple old-age health issues became too much for her body to bear.
She fought so hard for us, but on Christmas Day, she let us know that it was time to let her go. I thank god that her mind was still sharp as a tack until the end, which meant that she wasn’t confused or stressed. She was simply too tired to fight anymore and spent her final day surrounded by people who have loved her for years, me and my husband most of all. We gave her endless kisses, rubbed between her eyes like she loves, and I unwrapped her Christmas presents so that she could give them a few squeaks before we said goodbye.
She has been my tiny shoulder to lean on for the toughest moments of my life, and I was so honored to be that for her as we faced the end. Me, Brendon, and Ween. A family. So only other doctor besides me quit without notice two weeks before christmas. Our boss was therefore left completely on his own to cover 12h shifts on the week and 6h shifts on weekends. Christmas and NYE are always very busy in Veterinary so I hope he had a fun time. 😏
I also spoke to one of vet techs who still work there part time and things went to shit after I quit. Boss decided he was gonna let the other doctor, who had very little experience, to be completely on her own all the time and also work like I did - every other weekend on top of 5 days a week, so 12 days straight, weekend and then 12 days and so on. She got understandably frustrated as this was very stressul to her and she lasted only 5 months after I quit. I am a bit shocked he behaved like this because when I worked, he didn't let me do ANYTHING on my own besides the fact I got much more experience than the other doctor and he was constantly hovering over me and criticising me in front of clients, so leaving her completely alone when she couldn't genuinely handle it because of lack of experience was like 180. Ironically that was what I wanted him to do the whole time because I felt better working on my own but he was too controlling. He also payed her much less than me (barely above minimum wage). She understandably couldn't handle the stress so she quit.
I heard he also doesn't pay this other vet tech to cover shifts on weekends. Like forgets she worked that days. So she will also be probably leaving soon, leaving the boss with only one full time and one part time techs. Good luck for him.
I was struggling for so long thinking maybe I was the problem, I was entitled, that I should work so hard because that is what it is like in that field and I must just suck it up. But as this other girl quit so fast after taking my responsibilities made me finally realise I was not the problem. It was such a relief. And good luck now for our boss finding another doctor as he pays minimum wage to those straight out of vet school and doesn't want to hire someone more experienced because they demand more money but currently even fresh graduates are paid better everywhere else. I guess he will work himself to death on his own wish.

I was born female, but I’m a closeted transmasculine person. Though my friends have noticed signs in me years ago, I only realized this relatively recently, mostly because every time I’ve tried to express myself in a masculine way, like buying clothes or sitting in a certain posture, even in childhood, my family would shut it down. “Too bad, you’re born a girl, you need to deal with it,” etc. you know the drill.
My college friends had to convince me it’s ok to try new pronouns because I was raised thinking it’s unheard of to do so. Well, I’m really enjoying it, being referred to by he/them has made me feel the most myself in years. I’ve also been wearing men’s clothes and chest binders since I moved out. All without telling family. It’s refreshing and I want to take more steps, especially now that I moved onto professional school so I’m a full fledged adult.
I’ve planned to cut my hair short since early November, though I’ve been considering it far longer. I live 350 miles away from my parents but they still financially support me, from giving me grocery money to filling out food stamp/medicaid applications for me. My mom gets mad at me when I do any significant thing without telling her, so while I was driving over to visit family for thanksgiving I called my mom and said “I’m gonna cut my hair short, I just want to let you know so you’re in the know. I plan on saving what I cut so you can make extensions out of it” (she wears extensions and I have great quality hair, so prior to this I was growing it out, on my own accord, thinking it would be a nice gesture to give her my hair so someone can still get use of it).
She asked details about the haircut, like what style, where I plan to cut it, etc. I told her something like “short on the sides, something on top maybe, I’ll work with the barber because it’s my first time” and she went “barber…so you’re gonna cut it like a man?” And I said yes.

She panicked, telling me it would look ugly and we are going to see family, and that she does so much for me, the least I can do is not cut my hair for her. 🐶 Day 10 - Sava’s Safe Haven 🐶
For Day 10 Pawthereum made a donation of $10,000 to Sava's Safe Haven.
Sava’s was founded in 2012 by Oana Sava and her family, so it’s literally a family-run shelter. They work with local communities, assisting poor villages and animals that are living in horrible conditions.
They have no paid employees to help them — only four volunteers — yet they are able to provide a home to over 250 animals in need.
Despite their limitations, they have been able to rehome more than 1,500 pets to fantastic homes in countries across the world as well as providing free veterinary services to over 3,000 animals.
