In September I told my employer I was leaving in December (we have a 3 month notice period). He practically begged me to stay and said he'd speak to his accountant and see if they could stretch the budget to give me a pay rise. The offer was a joke.
I politely told him I couldn't stay at the company because they offer zero employee benefits and I was planning on starting a family in the next few years so I needed maternity pay (live in the UK). I also said I needed a job which had fixed hours whereas in this job "you can't finish until your task is done". He said I shouldn't worry and he would make sure I was looked after, and that the company was family friendly. I've since found out this is a lie and two girls left because he offered no flexibility for mothers. Anyway, I'd never take a risk like that based on a verbal promise.
However, in the 3 months since I did it, it's clear he's viewed me handing in my notice as rejection. He's been making petty jabs and even called me deceitful saying I was only joining a new company with a view of "having a baby on them". Firstly, I don't want a child in the next year or so and also, if I did, so what? That's why things like maternity pay are in place.
He's also said things along the lines of me not having ambition and wanting to give it all up for motherhood (as if that's a bad thing). In one conversation he then said he's going to ask women in interviews when they plan to have children so he knows not to hire them. I immediately said that was illegal and pointed out his wife had maternity leave for both of their children ( though not as direct as that). He replied saying he wouldn't get in trouble because he'd find a different way of asking them because he's "very clever".
I'm disgusted and have told my 2 female colleagues (we all hate him) not to make any decisions based on a verbal promise. I hate him and am so glad I'm leaving.
On a brighter note, today I had an interview with a company that is known for prioritising employee wellbeing and I felt it went great so fingers crossed.
