Macbook recognizes USB Flash Drive, but not external storage hard drives

Hello folks,

I have some strange issues with my USB ports on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running on Big Sur 11.2.3 (20D91).

I have three external hard drives, none of them get recognized. They do get power from the laptop, but not showing up on drivers' lists.

I was almost sure that USB ports are broken. But then I tried to plug in a USB flash drive and it worked. I did however need to restart my computer until it showed on the drivers' list. This tactic did not help though to get the external HDD working.

What could be wrong with it?

can USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash thumb drive run games?

I was just wondering if a flash drive can run games if it's 3.2 Gen 1.
I know load times are slow but can they run them? or at least faster than a 5400rpm internal HDD? And will the stick burn out quick? I've heard that USB sticks are not designed for intensive I/O operations. Thanks a lot in advance.

Lost Files on USB flash drive after reinstalling Windows10

Hey guys,

I did a stupid mistake and I hope someone can help me.

Today we have received a new laptop for work but Win10 was preinstalled by the seller. To avoid security problems, I wanted to delete the current Win10 system and I created the file I needed to a USB flash drive so I could boot from the flash drive when starting the laptop and reinstall Win10.

Everything went fine until I was asked to select the partition where to install Win10. Of course, I chose the biggest one of the shown 3 partitions, but unfortunately this was not possible because the programm told me that (I try to translate it as best as I can) "The partitions on the selected disk do not follow the recommended order" ... I have never seen this error so I googled and found this page: (I know it is in German but you may figure out the main commands which were used)

https://www.easeus.de/partitionieren-tipps/gpt-festplatte-partitionen-entsprechen-der-empfohlenen-reihenfolge-nicht.html

I did everything and after I had refreshed the menu, I could only pick 1 partition now instead of the previous 3. And it worked. I was able to completely install windows. BUT when I wanted to delete the created file on the USB drive because it was not my drive but my boss's USB drive, the data which had been saved previously by my boss's son was gone. The only thing left on this drive was the data or backup or whatever I created in the first place and all his scans were gone.

I tried recuva, I tried EaseUS Data Recovery and even testdisk but without success. I have to admit, testdisk seems to be too advanced for me so I thought maybe anyone of you is able to help me with my problem? I really hope I can find those scans :(

Looking for a reliable and durable USB flash drive

I couldn't care less about capacity or read/write speeds. All I want is something reliable and durable. Something that has the lowest chance to fail. Whenever I look at a flash drive on Amazon, I see dozens of reviews of people saying their drive failed in like the first week. Which is the most reliable, tried and true brand? Samsung? SanDisk? Kingston? I also need it to be durable, something that can take a decent amount of abuse. Little dirt, little rain, being dropped, being stepped on, etc... Also would prefer one with a cap to protect the connector part. Thanks in advance!

Smallest (volume-wise) USB-C flash drive?

I'm looking for a USB-C drive I can keep plugged into my MacBook most of the time. So far this is the smallest I can find, but it still seems a bit bulky. I see tons of tiny USB-A drives, so I'm wondering if there are smaller USB-C ones.

Any suggestions?

Asking help to fixing flash drive that says "Please insert a disk into USB drive (x)"

Hello, I'm new member here.
I've problem with my USB flash drive/ flash disk that it turned to something like this https://ibb.co/hy4Rjt5
and when I double click on it, the window pops out says "Please insert a disk into USB drive".
I respectfully ask for help from this community to tell the way for recovering my flash drive, because it have some of my important files in it.

after knowing the problem, I tried several thing from internet to solve the problem. but i still cannot solve the problem. the following problem solving that i attempted was:

  1. go to device manager reinstall the drive, reinstall USB mass storage, then restart pc
it's not helping, I've tried it several time and it won't back to normal
  2. go to properties, tools, then error checking
when I clicked check, the windows pop out says "The disk check could not performed because windows can't access the disk" https://ibb.co/X2mNzbC
  3. go to disk management, change drive letter, then go CMD for "CHKDSK (x)/:R"
when I tried this, CMD reply with "Cannot open volume for direct access.". My guess is first, it can't because my windows can't access the disk. and second, when i go to disk management my flash drive tabs mentioned as "No Media" https://ibb.co/Qjr3JH9
  4. create new volume on disk management.
I can't attempt this, because the disk have no partition in the tab https://ibb.co/X8vd2Xr
  5. go to CMD for cleaning disk "disk part > list disk > select disk > clean".
when I attempt this, CMD reply with "There is no media in the device." i guess it was related to disk description in device management https://ibb.co/gW2yr9x

I began to lost my confidence after tried these, this post was my last hope for recovering my flash drive. I again respectfully ask for help from this community to cover this problem

thanks
hope you all doing well
