I'm curious, where they originate from?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. But I don't know what to call them other than "color coded MBTI character set", so I haven't had any luck with Google. Nor have I had any luck searching this subreddit for the same reason.
Iβve been rewatching Gilmore Girls for the 15th time (minimum, and I saw it for the first time two years ago) and itβs so interesting to see all of the characters who are clearly autistic but arenβt said to be.
To answer my own question, I think mine has to be Paris. Sheβs one of the most interesting characters to me and so many of her struggles are common for other autistic people, like her difficulty making friends, missing jokes, taking what others say so literally that it can go to extremes. And I love that she doesnβt change who she is in the end but just becomes confident in herself.
A coded character is a character that, for some reason or another, isn't allowed to exhibit certain characteristics, so the way creators get around that is by sneaking in certain details to hint at the desired characteristic. An example would be the Sidekick in Static Shock. The late writer Dwayne McDuffie stated that Richie was in fact Gay, but the creators weren't allowed to make him openly show this, so instead they implied it by making him over enthusiastically assert his heterosexuality whenever the topic of girls came up.
My example would be it took Knuckles, the Hard punching boxer character with dreadlocks, who's main musical thematic elements are Rap and Jazz, being played by Idris Elba to realise he might be a black guy.
Iβve only realised + diagnosed as autistic in the last few months and Iβm currently rewatching some of my favourite shows and itβs funny how all of my favourite characters are autistic/autistic coded! It makes me really happy. Formally I headcanoned all of my favourite characters as ADHD and whenever I went online I saw people saying βX is so autistic!!β and I was always so confused how people donβt headcanon them as ADHD, but now I understand haha It means so much to me to have characters in media that I can relate to :β)
Anyway my favourite autistic characters are: Zuko (ATLA), Data (ST:TNG), Julian Bashir (ST:DS9), Charlie (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Tom Hollands Peter Parker, Simon Snow (Carry On by Rainbow Rowell), Will Graham (Hannibal)
Mine is buddy from elf!
We all know that Gypsy and Michel are gay as hell but there's no way Taylor is straight
Iβve just finished watching Ghostbusters Afterlife and the character Phoebe is one of the best autistic-coded characters Iβve ever seen, sheβs exceptionally gifted in her special interests (mainly science) and socially very awkward, she even makes a comment βI feel emotions on the insideβ Anyway she was a really good character in an amazing film, which ties in very well with the first two.
I have read the books multiple times and I was surprised when I recently discovered that many people think Sirius and Lupin are queer coded characters. I never once realized this and to be honest still can't see it (and I'm part of the LGBTQIA+ community). So if anyone could explain why people think they are queer coded it would be great. The only argument I have seen is "oh because they lived together in book 5" and I don't think it's a very good one.
I recently went to go see βLast Night In Sohoβ (no spoilers. Although heavy TW for the actual movie. Deals with SA, forced sex work, and domestic abuse) and itβs so apparently obvious to me that the main character, Ellie, is autistic coded.
So hereβs a list why
-hyperfixations/ special interests in fashion and London in the 60s
-no social circle besides her caretaker (gran)
-uses headphones to avoid social interactions and drown out overwhelming noises
her tone of voice and therefore the meaning of her questions is often misinterpreted
clearly uncomfortable in social situations
-difficulty with understanding sarcasm and teasing
-masking
-inappropriate facial expressions
-responds to rhetorical questions without understanding theyβre rhetorical
slight stimming
mimics voices and sayings of people she idolizes
uncomfortable with flirting, or sexual advances even before things get bad
often misunderstands what people are saying
difficulty organizing thoughts and verbally expressing herself
pitch and tone of her voice isnβt very controlled, itβs either passionate or kind of flat
very strong moral values and sense of justice, even if that sense of right and wrong isnβt proper by βnormalβ standards
Long story short, this young woman is autistic and you can pry her from my cold dead hands.
What are some of your favorite autistic coded women or AFAB characters?
As somebody who often gets deeply immersed and imaginative when playing video games, I often attempt to use my imagination to play out scenarios in my head for the characters I'm with if I happen to have enough detail to work off of it. In general, likable personality traits and meaningful characterization is what draws me to games; I totally get the appeal of fighting games, MOBAs and so on, but given those kinds of games pretty much never actually allow any degree of freedom to play how you want and still be valid in playing it that way is something I personally have trouble with. Even RPGs aren't safe with this, given in the competitive scene a great deal of PokΓ©mon loved by many are outright dead-weight competitively speaking, with that alongside the ongoing power creep meaning some PokΓ©mon are going to do others' job better than others.
So what about FE? The thing I've recognized what I like about this series so much is how the measuring stick for good or bad units are instead rooted based on tactical use as opposed to actual endgame potential; this is largely done because given the sheer brevy of ways to play the game and encouraging players to use their favorite characters that they're the most attached to, in the vast majority of games the players can make exceptional use out of them even when poised at a disadvantage to training them, and provided the player has enough persistence and will to use them, they can become army-clearing badasses if you choose to use them because you're attached to their character so much. Sure, it obviously doesn't change investing in an Armor being a pointless choice compared to a Wyvern, but if you want to do that regardless because you like the Armor personality-wise or design-wise you can and you are able to. That's something I love about FE: the design choice that while some tactical choices are vastly superior to others on the grounds of maneuvering, the fact anyone has the ability to do well based on your choice of usage of them if you really like their character. And the fact the actual number of unusable characters across the series are far more borderline than actually unusable (FE6's worst units, most of FE12's second half, most of FE13's on Lunatic) shows just how well-calibrated FE is in my mind for the most part to allow you to use who you like the most personality, playstyle or design wise and still be able to do well with them given enough effort.
It's especially important to me given I alwa

I.e: All the Can't Fear Your Own World Characters group together under a subheading or all the new SAFWY Beyond Bankai character versions together.
A good example of this can actually be seen in League of Legends when you look at your champion skins. They have a setting that puts them in groups based in the skin line such as Pentakill or Infernal.
I just want to see what Machine Society characters I have etc.
Basically the title. I want to get a proper character controller for my game. Opsive seems like the best one but it talks a lot about setting it up with their guns. I already have my own weapons set up and my own code for picking them up dropping them and special types of weapons. Can I use Opsive only as the movement controller and not have it run the guns. Also would anyone recommend a different character controller. Thanks in advance.
Just a forewarning, this is indeed a burner account in case anyone checks. I'm a writer, and a handful of people I know in real life follow my main account. I personally dislike publicly announcing writing projects until I'm certain I'll finish them, so I don't want to post on an account where they'll see it and trace it back to me. It's nothing to do with the content of my question; it's merely that I like to keep my projects under wrap in their early stages.
With that out of the way, I'm looking for advice on a character I've started to write for. The story is still in its early drafts, but a beta reader of mine noted that the character (let's call her Aya for simplicity's sake) shares certain motifs and themes with transgender characters. Now for context, I'm a straight, white male, but I have been exposed to a fair bit of the trans experience over the last few years. Two close friends of mine have transitioned (one NB and another MtF) since 2020, and I've another close friend (FtM) whose brain I've picked a lot after discovering ContraPoint's channel. Needless to say, I'm not surprised that some of these themes have shown up in my writing; after all, the process usually involves taking in what's around you. However, I'm worried that what I have done may be considered insensitive or insulting. After all, not all metaphors (intentional or not) really stick the landing. I'm looking at you Bright.
That being said, I think the only way for me to start is by briefly describing the character. The most noticeable aspect about Aya is that she's undead in a world that doesn't take too kindly to that fact. After a few years of being in the dirt, her story kicks off with her trying to return home to her husband. However, he- still distraught with grief- reacts poorly to her sudden appearance and refuses to accept she's still the same person. He doesn't want to sully the few surviving memories of her when she was alive with what she is now: rotting and decayed, to him a monster. In his perspective, he'd rather let the past remain buried.
This kicks off an existential crisis of identity for Aya and acts as the backbone for the story. Is she still the same person, and if so, does she still want to be? She cannot change what she is nor did she choose it. Early sections of the story also revolve a lot around fears of coming out to others (perhaps one of the more obvious parallels). Some characters respond well to learning she's undead, but others respond with dis

Iβve going through the subreddit and I havenβt seen anything mention it yet. They show very obvious traits of ASD and ADHD in the family and you could even break down the genetics of who got what and how. Iβm diagnosing any characters, but I have both and just see how much they all could benefit from being evaluated. Iβm only on s5 so that might change later but itβs been pretty consistent from what Iβve seen so far.
Do you know any characters that give off "Hmmm they might have HPD"-vibes?
Seinfeld is on Netflix now, and it's been quite the trip down memory lane. I've been abroad for many years, so I don't have a chance to watch reruns on TV and haven't seen the show in any capacity for about 15 years.
Having learned what what I've learned about autism and ADHD, I watched the first few episodes and thought "oh this dude is neurodivergent AF." A lot of Jerry Seinfeld's comedy in those days was based on his bafflement over various social rituals and his efforts to understand human interaction. On the show, he also seems to need things done in a particular way and has some intense interests in the Mets and Superman (though the way he expresses those interests are within the realm of "social acceptability"). So I went online to see if Jerry--the fictionalized version of Jerry Seinfeld himself as depicted in the show--is autistic in anyone else's head canon*.
What I found instead was that apparently Jerry Seinfeld the real-life actor and comedian mused back in 2015 about whether he might be on the spectrum, and it was met with a backlash that was so bad that he had to retract the statement. I think that's kind of sad because the backlash seemed to be coming not from the actual autistic community, but from "Puzzle Piece Organisation that Shall Not Be Named"-types who are all "my son who hits himself and can't use the toilet on his own is a Real Autistic, how DARE this successful comedian insinuate that he might be on the spectrum!"
I wonder what kind of response he'd have gotten if he made this statement now, because I will go out on a limb here and say that the "Jerry Seinfeld" character as depicted in the show Seinfeld, viewed from modern understanding of what autism can look like, is a ND-coded character.
*head canon-- if you're not familiar with the term, it means when a fictional character in a piece of media is never explicitly said to have some certain characteristic (ND, LGBT, etc.), but you and other fans think they might.
Subreddit for finding a place where you can set up a fictional fight between characters of different universes. Can be different genres, then people can give their thoughts of who would win the fight in the comments.
Mine are Murderbot in the Murderbot book series by Martha Wells (scifi), Grace in Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon (fantasy romance book), Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock in Elementary, and "Harry" in Resident Alien played by Alan Tudyk (scifi I guess? TV series).
Especially book recommendations are welcome and many many blessings upon your house if it's a book series because I need something new to read :)
People are obsessed and in love with characters like Sherlock, Luna Lovegood, the whole Big Bang Theory ensemble, every "quirky" side character or even really extreme and scary ones like The Joker or Harley Quinn... when in real life they would be just as socially shunned or actively avoided as they are in their fictional world. How is that? Like, I have no social skills and am mentally ill. Where are all my fans?
I was watching 'Grandmas Boy' with a friend of ours the other day and had a crisis over the antagonist character JP. He was just so obviously coded in the way he was written and directed, and we had a helluva time pointing out all the moments that made us go "oh my god that's relatable and they're playing it off as weird and cringy oh nooooooo" lol
are there any other tv/movie/book characters that you've thought were coded as having DID/OSDD?
So, I've had an original character that I made in about 2016 and I just recently noticed that he's very autistic-coded. Mainly probably because I was going through a lot of stuff at the time and was suppressing my own autistic traits so I think I projected them onto him without realizing.
The thing is, I've almost always treated him like a child even though he is 18. It probably doesn't help that he is really small. I have gotten better with actually imagining him as his age but idk I've just been worried that I may have been infantilizing an adult character with autistic traits since I saw a few posts about that kind of stuff.
As I said though, I have gotten better with it (probably because I actually finally thought his character out better now). Like now he acts like an almost typical adult but he still has his bad days where a few years ago I just made him act like an innocent and naΓ―ve child 24/7.
Idk this was just a big rant of what has been on my mind.
Iβm aro-spec too so I donβt really have crushes on characters, but for some reason I always like these kinds of characters the most. Probably because I find them relatable. Itβs also nice to watch/read about them because there arenβt any unnecessary sex scenes. While Iβm sex repulsed in reality, Iβm pretty indifferent when it comes to media, so itβs not that I mind it if itβs earned, but the rushed ones make my blood boil, so itβs great just to avoid that entirely. I guess what Iβm trying to say is that I wish I could be friends with these characters or with someone similar in real life. It would be so much easier to have someone who understands.
