In 2002, an old man committed suicide in Eastlake, Ohio, leaving behind $82,000 in his bank account. Calling himself Joseph Newton Chandler III, he'd worked as an electrical engineer, but mostly kept to himself, making little gadgets in his small apartment. When authorities attempted to contact next of kin, based on his birth certificate, they learned that he was not Joseph Newton Chandler - who died as a boy in Texas, in 1945.
Since 2002, authorities have been trying to figure out who this man was and why he had been living under a fake name for 25 years.
A couple years ago, investigators released new information about a trip this man took to the emergency room in 1989. He arrived in the ER with severe lacerations on his penis. The story he told doctors was that he cut himself while masturbating with a vacuum cleaner. The doctor made a note that he appeared older than his stated age.
Last year, the US Marshals announced that they tested Y-chromosome genetic information from the deceased man and now believe that the last name of his biological father was "Nicholas" or "Nichols."
Today, the U.S. Marshals sent me an updated poster for the man who called himself Joe Chandler.
Marshal Pete Elliott said they now believe the man came from the Tulsa, Oklahoma area or possibly Oklahoma City. His last name was almost surely Nicholas or Nichols.
It seems they're getting very close to figuring out who this guy was.

Two weeks ago, the U.S. Marshals, with the help of forensic genealogists Colleen Fitzpatrick and Margaret Press, announced the man's true identity - Robert Ivan Nichols.
As part of his press release, Marshal Pete Elliott, who heads the Cleveland office, thanked the Reddit community for the leads that have come in over the years. I spoke to him today and he's asked for help in identifying potential crimes Nichols may have committed.
Nichols, he says, had a temper that came out in frightening outbursts, sometimes. He once modified a toy BB gun into a fully-automatic weapon which he then used to destroy a collection of toy airplanes while his kids watched. During a birthday party he told his wife it was time to eat. She suggested they wait for everyone to arrive. Nichols responded by digging a fist into his child's cake and eating from his hands, saying, "We'll eat when I say we eat."
Marshals are most interested in what Nichols was doing between 1975 and 1978. They believe he may have been involved in crimes that occurred in New York and Florida (but for now will not elaborate). Nichols obtained Chandler's birth certificate from Buffalo City Hall. He lived under the name Nichols until 1976 before switching to Chandler in 1978.
Elliott also wants people to look at two photographs of items found in Nichols' apartment by investigators. The first is a camera lens from Japan. The second is a sticker dated 1965.

The most I have seen relating to the USMS is old westerns and some of the titular marshals use shotguns as their primary weapon which made me come here to this Reddit community to ask, do U.S Deputy Marshals get to choose their own primary weapon, like a shotgun? Or is that just something out of fiction?
This was in 2016, so it's a bit dated. The end of the video in the link states that there were 1200 to 1500 more arrests planned by the US Marshalls for Student Debt defaults.
Does anyone know of any follow up to this?
Being new to Texas, however, this blows my fucking mind. How are federal resources allowed to go after a 30 year old $1500 debt? Wouldn't arresting someone because of a debt be the equivalent of a debtors prison? Why aren't student debts dischargable after a certain number of years like other forms of debt?
Since this was in 2016, has there been more instances of this type of thing happening?
