I'm about to start a 2-year digital filmmaking course, and one of the extra-curricular activities I'm going to try is the planning (year 1) and execution (year 2) of a TV1-ready series. TV1 is basically Canada's approach to public access, and the majority of offerings on there are 6 10-minute episodes of non-fictional content. I've got a couple of ideas that would approximately par for the course of what's already on the platform (a cooking show showcasing regional cuisine, or a quick introduction to the Miκkmaq language). I've self-produced short films before so I know I can ultimately make the thing even if I can't rope in other students, and if for whatever reason TV1 isn't interested I could always throw it up on Youtube.
What I'm curious about is whether or not other people here have gone the public access route for projects, with an eye for either using it in their portfolio, or perhaps even trying to turn it into something that pays for itself and then some. If you've got some experience with this kind of distribution, what's the upside and the downside of it?

Why the hell aren't they showing us the full live press conferences. This is literally the most important times in our lives. The Q and A portion of the press conferences give answers that some NZers need and TV1 not showing it is abysmal. Look, I know you can watch it live in full on RNZ youtube but you know who doesn't use the internet that much and watches TV1? Old people. When they cut back to Coronation Street everyone probably thought that was it while the Q and A portion was still going on for like another 15 minutes. TV3 is doing a much better job they are still live as at 1:50pm and I think they are going to stay live until the PMs update at 3pm today.
It seems to me that tv three are pushing a view from the point of business and money And bashing the government for staying in levels to long. I wonder who butters their bread? Tv one is just as bad too, keeping very quiet when the government makes mistakes, we all know who butters their bread. One gets paid to tell the news by business and the other tells the news from the government. I'm not sure who is worse.
