Elden Ring's deep connection to alchemy and the Ripley Scroll

https://preview.redd.it/ihq4qfkp4x881.jpg?width=743&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0881d3b9ca018db29e30a33df52fc807821e63e6

In a previous post I put forth a theory that Elden Ring is the Dark Souls of alchemy, adapting and literalizing concepts and symbols from the Hermetic tradition of alchemy, specifically the magnum opus or Great Work, to form the basis of its world and lore.

The release of the story trailer and recent Edge interview motivated me to revisit these connections and elaborate on my initial theories. The previous post can be found pinned in my profile, but I will recap some of the key points and sum up the additional points below:

The Elden Ring logo can be compared to alchemy-related diagrams such as the Ripley Scroll, which illustrates the achievement of the fabled philosophers’ stone.

  • The logo bears a strong resemblance to the Ripley Scroll’s image of a coiled dragon atop a globe (see the previous post for more on this).
  • Similarly, the ring of circles pattern seen in the giant’s eye from the Elden Ring gameplay reveal trailer and armor design motifs resembles the Ripley Scroll’s depiction of the philosophers’ stone as a ring of circles.

The player’s journey from lowly Tarnished to golden Lord corresponds to alchemy’s Great Work, where lead is literally or metaphorically turned to gold.

  • Just as the culmination of alchemy’s Great Work is the creation of the philosophers’ stone; the successful completion of the Long March could lead to the creation of the Elden Ring.
  • I believe Godfrey was the first to make a journey known in Elden Ring’s world as β€œthe Long March.” After uniting with Marika, the Lands Between experienced a time of balance and prosperity governed by the Golden Order.

The β€œbloody wolf” identity of the Tarnished mirrors that of alchemy’s β€œgrey wolf” (antimony), a β€œcooperative metal” capable of purifying gold.

  • The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine suggests the base material for the magnum opus be a β€œfierce grey wolf”. It describes a transformation from wolf to lion and ultimately king.

Various sections of the Ripley Scroll seem to correspond to key lore concepts in Elden Ring.

  • >!In the recent Edge interview, Miyazaki describes the Elden Ring as β€œmetaphysical” in nature, and says that the circles of the logo β€œrepresent the laws of the world, the rules and order.” This fits the scroll’s depiction of the philosopher’s stone as a ring uniting seven key princi

Reboot Series 22: William McKinley

Party: Republican

Home State: Ohio

Term: 1897-1901

McKinley's administration had often been viewed as a failed one until the 1950s when he was seen as successful and strong, however in recent times people have reevaluated him and mixed receptions have came out of it. Many consider him a man of great intellect and authority, who helped form the America we know today. Others consider him no better than a tyrant, one who had disdain for the constitution and overreached his power for political gain. Whichever one you fall in, I do not blame you. He is such a unique, interesting and controversial figure that has many negative and positive qualities, and an evaluation of him can be fair no matter the conclusion presented.

DOMESTIC POLICY

Economy

McKinley's tenure, besides the foreign entanglements, was characterized by several economics decisions and reforms which would prove controversial. He turned his attention to the tariff, bankruptcy, gold and silver.

His first initiative was a protective tariff. McKinley hoped a high tariff would help gain more revenue for the government and could put an end to the high deficits created by the Panic of 1893. He knew that the strong Democratic opposition to tariffs would be an obstacle to run over, but with congressional sessions underway, his hopes were high. McKinley's biggest proponent was Nelson Dingley Jr., who was in favor of high tariffs as well and proposed a new bill (Dingley Tariff) to institute a high tariff. The bill passed with relative ease and fulfilled McKinley's wish, however he had more ambitions.

Next he looked to monetary policy, in which he advocated for the gold standard and strongly lobbied for it. His lobbying was successful, as he passed and signed the Gold Standard Act of 1900, which established gold as the only standard for redeeming paper money, stopping bimetallism (which had allowed silver in exchange for gold). Initially, he supported both gold and silver in hopes of attracting more support, however after his proposal for an international conference to officially condone bimetallism (proposed by France, the UK and the US, defeated by the UK due to it's strong opposition).

During the Spanish conflict, he passed the Bankruptcy Act of 1898 which involved bankruptcy to give companies an option of being protected from creditors. He also signed the War Revenue Act of 1898, authorized a tax on a wide range of goods and services, including amusements, liquor, tea, and tobacco, and r

Why is distributism preferable to the social market economy (or Nordic model etc)

In what concrete ways does distributism benefit your average person more than the social market economy?

The social market economy is characterized by social protections in the form of social welfare policies to protect those less fortunate from economic hardship, strong unions to ensure a living wage and good working conditions and tripartite regulations to subordinate the economy as a whole to the common good.

I don’t necessarily understand the romanticism with small businesses. I have nothing against them, of course, but what I mean is that they don’t necessarily offer better wages, more benefits or better working conditions to their employees, not better products, prices etc to consumers. Small businesses also do nothing to help the unemployed, incapicated or homeless. Unions and taxation are still necessary.

Cooperatives don’t necessarily offer many advantages to regular unionized firms either. In fact, in some sectors cooperatives actually offer lower wages than conventional firms.

So in what ways small businesses and cooperatives benefit people more than a social market economy?

Public TV: you can reach Gyumri faster now that the North-South's Transh-3 Talin-Horom section is done. One side of the road has a new infrastructure.

The road used to travel through Talin village. This is a new "bypass" road with a junction. 50km has been asphalted. Transh-2 construction begins next year. //

Construction workers complain that local residents regularly steal the STOP signs to use them as a lid for tonir. The most Armenianest problem.

##Parliament dismisses "media manipulations" and releases transcripts after a Russian Pravda journalist's attempts to defend Russia's perceived inaction during the 2020 war

Russian Komsomolskaya Pravda journalist defended the country's stance during the war. He confronted Parliament Speaker Alen Simonian during a meeting two weeks ago. The Parliament says the journalist's words were taken out of context by Armenian media, and that the journalist himself was manipulative.

The Parliament released the transcript of the conversation.

Reporter: you gave away Karabakh.

Simonyan: do you really think we handed over Karabakh?

Reporter: I think it was done to push Armenia's foreign policy direction away from Russia.

Simonyan: such "giveaway" ideas exist in Armenia, too. Part of the public believes that Russia gave Karabakh to Azerbaijan.

Reporter: do you agree with them?

Simonyan: what makes you think anyone gave away Karabakh? You are offending soldiers who fought and died in the war, and their families. Our people fought hard.

If we wanted to give away the lands, there were several options, including Lavrov's plan [ooooooooooof???]. So, to claim that someone has handed over something means not knowing what is happening in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh, and even Russia.

Reporter: in early October [2020] I was at Donbas volunteer meeting. Several thousand people were ready to help you but the leader told them not to travel because several of them had gone there and returned. Armenia adopted a law against foreign mercenaries which would apply to these volunteers

##Supreme Court issued a severe reprimand to judge in a case involving Pashinyan's daughter

Justice Ministry asked the Supreme Court to reprimand judge Zaruhi Nakhskaryan over two alleged ethic violations.

The first was about the judge rejecting a case relating to the authorities' attempt to recover a sum. The judge argued that the defendant is from Vanadzor so she (in Yerevan) can't preside over the trial. The Justice Ministry disagreed, citing the law. Today the Supreme Court sided with the judge and denied the motion to discipline.

The second was about the same judge refusing to recuse herself in Shushan Pashinyan (Premier's daughter) vs Narek Samsonyan (former regime media activist), amid bias complaints against the judge. The Supreme Court found that the judge violated ethics rules; she received a severe reprimand.

##discussions were held over a more comprehensive vetting in judicial to get rid of corrupt judges

Experts have been debating in recent years on how deep the judicial vetting can go under the current Constitution. Justice Ministry recently organized meetings with NGOs, legal experts, and Supreme Court to discuss the topic.

Justice Ministry concludes the meetings: we found that judges can be vetted in three ways:

  1. Form a brand new body with the necessary authority and rules.

  2. Initiate disciplinary proceedings against judges that violate rules.

  3. Set new standards for initiating disciplinary proceedings.

The first point can only be done if we amend Article 73 of the Constitution.

The second point is already being used today. The Corruption Prevention Commission, the Ethics Commission, and the Justice Ministry have been asking the Supreme Court to discipline judges. Some judges have been terminated.

The third point is about setting new standards within the existing Constitution. This can punish judges whose verdicts were overturned by the European Court for Human Rights, who have ties with the criminal underworld, or those that make politically-motivated verdicts. For this to be implemented, we need to amend some laws. We have launched intensive work in this direction.

We thank all the participants for their support in resolving this important issue. The public should know that two of these vetting methods can be done with legal reforms today, while one of them through a Constitutional amendment. //

This is your 20-minute Tusday briefing in 4898 words.

##interview with General Samvel Babayan

Babayan is a 1990s war commander and 2020 Artsakh Security Council chief.

Reporter: why did Shushi fall? Was it captured with weapons or by other means?

Babayan: all the flaws of our disorganized army command from the past 20 years were reflected in those 44 days. Doesn't matter if it's Shushi, Hadrut, or Kubatlu. The officers were unable to properly manage the army and form strategies. The troops panicked after airstrikes. They couldn't do the necessary psychological work to return them to the battlefield, etc.

Reporter: Pashinyan spoke about the right for Armenians to return and live in Shushi and Hadrut. Can we "return" these territories?

Babayan: I think we can return both cities and the lost territories in general. If Azeris truly want peace, they must return the Nagorno Karabakh territories that held a referendum.

Reporter: what was the Nov 9 statement about? Was it ceasefire or capitulation?

Babayan: ceasefire. It addressed the need to achieve a ceasefire. If Azerbaijan doesn't hold any more negotiations and claims "it's over, it's our land" that means they interpret it as capitulation. If they return to the OSCE Minsk group for negotiations, then it was a ceasefire. Hopefully, it was a ceasefire.

Reporter: in that case, does that help or harm Armenia's interests when we use the term "capitulation"? Why do we use this term, against what, and whom?

Babayan: I try not to use it. There were wars. Azerbaijan gave 30,000 deaths and lost 7 regions. In the second war, we lost 6 regions. I don't accept it as capitulation. I don't accept that our people lost, because it was our military command that failed to carry out the tasks. Time will come and you will learn the whole truth.

Reporter: will the war commission give us the answers?

Babayan: Yes. We will reveal the truth. The policies that we've seen towards our people in the past year, that spread fear and "capitulation", are simply immoral. You cannot blame the people for the mistakes of the few.

Today we are in a better position than we were in 1992 when we were losing. But we found the strength to recover and achieve victory. Don't dishearten the people.

Reporter: what do you expect to learn from the war commission?

Babayan: truth and justice. I don't think there are any war episodes that I'm not aware of. Ma
