Both of the following games will be awarded to one (1) single winner. The rules are simple:

1. Method of Entry: Any post/comment made within this thread before the draw time will qualify as a valid entry as long as it and your account comply with r/RandomActsOfGaming's rules and the post is not offensive.
2. Selection Method: I will use redditraffler to draw from eligible participants.
3. Entry Period: Will be approximately 1 day. Will end on or after 12:15 AM CST on November 23rd (just after midnight CST).
4. The rule about rule #6: Follow the rules of your host. I used to waive this rule (which I thought was my lucky #7, but anyways) and would allow trades when it involved multiple games in a single giveaway so winners could pick and choose what they wanted to keep to prevent wasteful wins - but I don't condone breaking the rules so just keep it on the DL what you do with what you win.
5. These game keys were purchased in the USA. I don't think there will be any issues anywhere else (and you're not forbidden from trying), just understand if your country is restricted for some reason from using these keys - I won't replace them.

Hello guys, do you think I’ll enjoy Torchlight? I don’t really play games of its genre and it looks a little generic but it seems interesting and somewhat popular so I’m not sure really, afaik it’s 2 bucks for both games on Fanatical rn and I have only a few hours left to decide.

Also is Inscryption worth it for 15 bucks? I generally don’t buy games for prices like that or higher rn unless I really want them or the amount of content jusitifies the price but I just feel really tempted to get Inscryption. I don’t like roguelikes/lites anymore but fron what I’ve heard this game actually isn’t one. I’m afraid it won’t run well on my aged 4 GB RAM laptop with no dedicated graphics card. I played Pony Island from the same dev and really liked tho. Honestly the only thing keeping me from getting this game with no hesitation is the price and it only being 10% off although I get an extra discount with Humble Choice hence why it’s around 15 bucks.

I’m Peter Hu, a nearly 25+ year gaming industry vet. My past work includes creative director of Gazillion’s Marvel Heroes, founder and CTO at Runic Games (Torchlight I/II), founder and CTO at Flagship Studios (Hellgate: London), and programmer/designer/lead at Blizzard North (Diablo II/IIx). My first professional gig was as a programmer at 3DO (Army Men I/II).

Currently, I’m founder, programmer, and designer at Rhino Games, the San Francisco-based indie studio behind Mythgard, a f2p (“I wonder what stupid exploitative business model they’re going to come up with next”) CCG available on Steam, iOS and Android (please excuse the shameless plug).

In my time, I’ve worked with industry luminaries as well as a few certifiable idiots and loons. I’ve watched the gaming world go from exchanging floppy discs in plastic baggies in alleyways (or the suburban equivalent anyway) to billion-dollar companies with the ethics to match.

edit - Thanks everyone for participating in this AMA! If you have any other questions over the next few hours, I'll continue to try to answer them in a more lackadaisical fashion.

Interestingly, the order is both chronological and by time I spent on each game, most to least.

So staring off with Nioh (30-ish hours I guess?) - souls-like combat with RPG elements, sounds great, right? Except I'd say there's too much RPG added which dilutes the overall experience.

I've seen others complain about the skill-learning system, and I'd agree that it's a bit convoluted - either level up an attribute or find certain items to give you skill points, then spend those skill points to learn skills for specific weapons. Some of the skills may transfer from each weapon, mainly regarding stance changes and ki-charges. But overall you need to spend points on each weapon type to then use it effectively. So you're left with a shitty choice - learn a few skills for each weapon to try out, or spend everything on 1-2 weapons and ignore the rest.

My issue is mainly with the itemization. Rarity is almost arbitrary, the colour just represents the number of traits an item may have, and like in RPGs the item levels determine their overall power. So a lvl20 purple sword is weaker than a lvl30 green or blue sword. And while the game does offer "Soul Matching" - pay to increase the item-lvl of something - the costs of that become astronomical beyond a certain point, so you're better off just swapping out all of your gear every 2-3 levels.

Next, Torchlight II (8 hours).

I played on normal difficulty, but honestly it felt very much like easy mode, I guess I was being punished for being too thorough with the exploration (the maps were too large for their own good). I've had a few 100-stacks of health potions because there was never any urgency to use those. The first time I died was around that 8-hour mark purely because I got bored - seeing how far I could get just by right-clicking. I think you can finish the game with just the mouse easily if you could bind the potions to some additional buttons.

And Shadow Warrior 2 (not even 2 hours).

The gameplay seemed fine in regards to movement and combat, you could dash and had some spells on hand etc. But the Duke Nukem-esque humour didn't connect with me, in fact I turned the voice volumes down because I didn't want to listen to those shitty puns throughout.

Now, there's one over-arching issue with all 3 games which I hope is the root of the problem - micro-stat management. I'll give some examples for each game.
