A list of puns related to "Top Down Perspective"
Hi all - I'm looking to do research on 2d games that used both top-down and side-scrolling perspectives.
It doesn't matter whether the primary aspect was one or the other but more that there was a mixture of the two perspectives in the same game.
Some examples I already have on my list:
My examples are mostly "retro" but any modern examples are definitely welcome too.
Do you have any you would recommend I add to the list?
It was a game I would play on my parents laptop. I was pretty young and definitely didnβt understand what was going on but I remember there were two factions against each other in each match. One had plant/animal-type units and the other were fiery units. The objective was to destroy the opposing teamβs base. I think the name if the game was something very short (4 letter word or so) but Im not quite sure.
Platform: Flash game I played in my browser (the glorious days of internet explorer and flash). Could have been miniclip or kongregate or any of the more obscure sites I used to spend time on.
Time: I played it between 2006 and 2008.
Gameplay/Features: You basically played as a young boy entering a haunted mansion. Gameplay involved finding keys and pushing boxes around to open doors and progress further. Red was the main color scheme, and the art style was pretty distinctive IIRC.
I've been replaying some of the flash games I used to play, before it dies on 31st December. For some reason this game visually made an impression on me as a child and I'm interested to find out what it was. It had a horror like vibe with lots of red.
My friend took a photo of every town in the game the wiki page could use these I am sure:

I'm looking for this game since 2015, tried on TOMT but no response, so maybe this sub could try?...
Platform(s): PC online (most likley Flash) game
Genre: Vehicular combat
Estimated year of release: late 2000's / early 2010's
Graphics/art style: Top-down / Isometric view, war-style graphics (ex. tank games).
Notable characters: No characters, there were 4 cars.
Notable gameplay mechanics: You would have several maps to "race" around with 3 or 4 other AI vehicles. You could earn money from using weapons binded to your car (like guns or bombs) and buy better stuff to upgrade your car, i remember you could upgrade your car overall and the last upgrade was a tank.
Other details: I remember there were 4 racing tracks and it took a while to get enough cash to get to the next track (they were purchased with money as i remember). The first track was a dump you would race around and the second was possibly a desert of some sort. The cars had multiple colors and possibly you would shoot out of your wheels? I don't remember any sounds from the game but it's possible it had a soundtrack, and likley to have sound effects of weapons.
Some time ago i found out it's very similliar to an old game called Death Rally, however the view is a bit less top-down here and more isometric. Also the graphics are more advanced in the game, and i'm not sure if there was a leaderboard. You can see Death Rally here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdGters14Ps
I also must have remembered the name of the game previously because i played it on my grandad's slow computer which didn't save any search history or cache on browsers (causing all games to reset while i was going on them again). It was most likley a game which saved data aswell.
EDIT 1: Just found something a bit more similliar, it is a flash game, but still not what i'm looking for. It has kind of the view i was looking for though (except it's more zoomed out): Death Racers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfGqubJbl0A
i remember finding it in links awakening and pokemon red. you navigate a maze and when you lose the music makes you super depressed. the graphics are comprised of sprites from other games.it might not even be real, but i remember playing it once and i heard about a suicide linked to it. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GAME?!
Platform(s): PC
Genre: RTS
Estimated year of release: maybe around 2006-2008?
Graphics/art style: 2D, top-down view, sci-fi ground combat
Notable characters: The main enemy's theme color is glowing green and black
Notable gameplay mechanics: you can take over control of one of your unit and manually move/shoot
Other details: - the main (maybe only) mode this game has is the campaign mode.
- only have single type of resource called credit, showing in form of integer at the top of the screen, and there is no building mechanic in the game, no veterancy system
- get resources certainly by destroying small resource nodes/crates and enemy structures and maybe from destroying enemy units
- there is no infantry units, the main units that player can use are like modern era mechanical units, armed buggy, rockets mounted jeep, tanks, and attack helicopters.
- at the top of the screen there are two buttons, one allows you to do upgrade and one allows you to summon more reinforcement to the battlefield
- the upgrades allow unit either have better armour/health points or advance weapons, they cost a lot but the upgrade is permanent for the whole campaign. More upgrades are unlocked when the player progressed the campaign.
- reinforcement tab allows you to summon units on the field
- at each mission a preset army is given to the player to control, player have no control on what will be deployed before hand.
- most of the enemy structure will explode upon destroyed
- the enemy is using hover tech, shooting glowing green plasma bolt
The level appeared to be underground, you played as a person in some sort of sci-fi suit. There was a vehicle you could ride around in a certain room(s)/area(s), I believe this vehicle had guns. I think I remember the enemies being some kind of alien bug creatures. The objective of the "level" was to unlock a gateway or path by destroying 3 power sources, each one in a different room. It kinda felt like a Zelda dungeon.
That is all I remember, my brother used to play it alot.
I'm creating a game in top-down perspective (3/4 perspective). This is not from the side and not from the top, but in between. You see both the side and the top from an angle.An example of this: Stardew Valley, Crossing Souls, the older Zelda games etc.
So imagine the player is at the top of a cliff on an island. I should only be able to see objects under the camera level (the cliff) and at a slight angle in front of the camera (a little bit of the water). So I can only see the water below the cliff, and not the horizon itself. If I understand it correctly, from a top-down perspective, the horizon is never visible.
Some games break the rules by having the horizon/skybox/background as a 2D side-view. This breaks the perspective a little, but it allows you to show the background/horizon/sky.Examples:
In the last example, you can see both the sky and the top of the bus, which should be impossible unless the bus is on a much higher vertical level.
Another option to fix this, would be to switch to a non-orthographic camera at that specific location, and gradually tilt the camera, to show the change in perspective. But this might look weird, as the rest of the game is played from a fixed angle.
So my question is, what solution do you prefer? It might be a nice solution to break the perspective rules and allow a nicer background for the scene instead of tilting the camera at specific locations.
Platform: PC
Genre: Was prob an adventure game
EYOF: Probably late 90's early 2000's
Graphics and Art: I remember it being pixelated like Corsairs but not as smudgy if that makes sense
Notable gameplay mechanics: I remember being able to fight other ships, dock and sell gold and materials, and going to island with like coconut trees and sandy beaches I think? Don't remember the end goal at all of the game though.
Thank you all in advance :)
I am looking for games that have a complete top down perspective, not from an angle but straight down. Some examples of games with this view are Heat Signature, Teleglitch, Door Kickers, Darkwood, Hotline Miami and Police Stories.
Do anyone here know more examples of such games? It is a + if they are pretty..
I probably first saw this game around 1993-1994. I think it was on a computer. It looked a bit like Asteroids where players controlled a spaceship from a top down perspective, but this game had color and better graphics. I think it was like a two-player battle game where each class or character had different bonuses/skills.
The one thing that always stuck with me was how one of the characters could launch their own crew members at an opponents ship and they would attack(or maybe assimilate like the Borg?). I think that character was some sort of necro-thing.
EDIT: I've gotten in touch with my cousin, and he's saying that the game was Escape Velocity Override. After looking at Star Control 2, I was sure that was it, but I guess not. I'll still call that the right answer, though, since it seems to me like that still might actually be right.
Literally just looking for ideas. Throw anything out there.
When doing a top down game like Link Between Worlds or Nation Red, like with these 3/4 perspectives, the characters appear longer vertically than they do horizontally. I am doing a game with 3D models where the player and enemies would be shooting projectiles like rockets at each other and I wanted to have the hitbox be the same dimensions vertically and horizontally.
However, if I were to have the hitbox be a simple 3D rectangle or cylinder in a 3/4 perspective, there could be some areas on the top areas of the characters you could aim at but not hit the character given the 3/4 perspective when they are horizontal to each other. This is a problem in League Of Legends where the hitboxes are on the character's feet and projectiles sometimes go past characters heads.
Does anyone have any ideas for how to avoid or minimize projectiles going past character heads given the 3/4 perspective and how did these games I linked avoid this issue? The player is going to be aiming at the center of body mass so if a projectile is aimed at the torso area it should register as a hit on the character.
hey there, so i just picked up an SP to mod and re shell. I've been looking to get to The legend of Zelda the minish Cap. any other suggestions for top-down perspective arpgs across the game boy consoles? any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.
I'm looking for arpgs because I get a little tired of playing turn-based top-down games. for example I love Pokemon for it top-down perspective but the gameplay gets stale after a while. I'm looking for more of a roguelike hack and slash top down or an action adventure top down maybe idk. like the minish cap, thanks again
Platform(s): Windows
Genre: SpaceSim RPG, with RTS missions
Estimated year of release: 2003-2006
Graphics/art style: bright and beautiful semi-realistic graphics, with top-down camera.
Notable characters: Different factions, or races, with unique appearance.
Notable gameplay mechanics: every action you take may affect your relationship with factions.
Other details: You may take a RTS missions to fight enemy on the unknown planet's surface.
In the deep space you may initiate a firefight with everyone, but it will affect your rating.
I can't remember the appearance of the main antagonist, though.
Good day.
I'll try to be clear because English is not my first language, also, my programming skills are still rusty.
I'm working on a Top-Down or 3/4 perspective platformer. Until now I've made jumping on 4 directions and skills use, also, collision with traps, water, holes and lava.
However, I have a problem with the walls. Walking is not a problem, but jumping.
This is an example of the test room:
https://i.imgur.com/MoaJkaP.png
If I jump while going forward, and the character collisions with a wall, I get stucked.
It gets worse on the "top" walls. If I jump while standing, it just bumps against the wall, or gets stucked. Same happens while moving.
I don't have code made for it yet. It had, but got discarded because didn't worked. The most closer thing I had was this:
Collision event:
walk=0 if walk==1{ switch (dir){ case "r": sprite_index=Ahreel_walk_right image_speed=0.25
break;
case "l":
sprite_index=Ahreel_walk_left
image_speed=0.25
break
case "u":
sprite_index=Ahreel_walk_up
image_speed=0.25
break
case "d":
sprite_index=Ahreel_walk_down
image_speed=0.25
break
}
} else{ switch (dir){ case "r": sprite_index=Ahreel_idle_right image_speed=1/8
break;
case "l":
sprite_index=Ahreel_idle_left
image_speed=1/8
break
case "u":
sprite_index=Ahreel_idle_up
image_speed=1/8
break
case "d":
sprite_index=Ahreel_idle_down
image_speed=1/8
break
}
} if jump ==1{ hspeed=0 vspeed=4 gravity=1 }
Hope you can help me, and please, try to explain to me easy, because programming is not my strenght.
I'm using an older version of GM because of my very old PC and not having money to pay GMS 2.
I vaguely remember this game, and was never able to find it again, despite thorough research.
The game is, as the title states, played in a top down perspective. You're walking through a city filled with rectangular buildings, probably in a mostly black and blue color scheme (not 100% sure about this). Some NPCs would roam through the streets, and some of them would attack you with melee weapons or guns. You were able to pick up weapons yourself, and shoot your way through the streets. The buildings could be entered. Once inside, you would start "racing", meaning you would continuously move in one direction at high speed, unable to stop. All you could do was change directions, similar to pacman. In the buildings, you'd usually find NPCs moving in the same manner, and sometimes there would be items on the ground.
My memory is vague, so it's possible my description is not entirely accurate.
I played this game a few years ago and I really liked it but I lost my phone and the game was lost as well as I can't remember it's name or any initials. It was a Top-Down Perspective shooting game (kinda like enter the gungeon/soul knight) with different heroes, each with different set of skills and guns. I tried looking for it on the playstore but no clue. Helping this clueless gamer out will be highly appreciated :)
sorry for the run on sentence lol
I just can't enjoy the latter... I really just can't. When the experience is more refined like in the PS2 era I can enjoy them. But it feels like there's this strange middle ground between the two in and around the PSX era that I just can't enjoy. The camera is weird, aesthetics are odd, the graphics look like shit and aren't nearly as refined or polished as the SNES graphics. If I could get around it I would but I just can't. It just feels weird.
I stumbled upon a game on Steam a few days ago and can't remember (or find) it anymore.
You organize boxes of items and deliver them as requests come in at a large storage facility. You must also organize the items in the area as they are delivered to you and you can carry some of them at a time.
The graphics are very simple (and might be mostly black and white). It seemed veeery indie, and I think it came out recently, but I'm not sure.
One of the reviews described it as a Resident Evil 4 inventory management game and another one as an Amazon storage facility simulator.
Appreciate the help :)
I'd like to play open world games that can run on a laptop like Don't Starve, but with good looking pixel art in the vein of Stardew Valley...
My ideal game would be something like the adventure mode in Dwarf Fortress, where you can explore a huge randomly generated world and build your base anywhere, but with nice graphics and a balanced gameplay.
I know that asking for a Dwarf Fortress with better graphics is dreaming too much, but do you know any game that can fit the bill even remotely?
I don't know if it was a true isometric perspective but it had 3D modelled graphics at least, kinda busted looking in that early 2000s kinda way. I remember it being quite colorful, with vivid green grass and big, bright blue mushrooms you eat to gain health (or possibly mana/some other thing). There was several classes, one of them being a spearman with a saxon looking handlebar moustache who had a voiceline about 'something something shish kebab'. Don't remember much else, never made it past the first few hours of the game i think.
Any guesses? Thanks a bunch β€οΈ
If you've only played FPS games before and never a MOBA, you might not realize this. I got into basic MOBA games very late to understand the implication of positioning and abilities. I've just now realized how to describe it after talking with a friend. I hope this helps a few out there.
Overwatch characters move very consistently, think about these actual movements as chess pieces (the class symbols didn't mess up too much there).
What βenemyβ means in this case is up to interpretation.
