A list of puns related to "Tony Mullane"
Happy birthday, Tony Mullane! "The Apollo of the Box" was born January 30, 1859, in Cork County, Ireland -- 160 years ago today.
Most famously, long before Pat Venditte, Mullane an ambidextrous pitcher. Since players didn't wear fielding gloves in those days, Mullane would hold the ball in both hands while on the mound... the batter not knowing which side the pitch would come from until he started his wind-up!
Though born in Ireland, Mullane came to America as a toddler and grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he'd often ditch school to play baseball. At the age of 23, Mullane -- a member of the Louisville Eclipse -- threw the first no-hitter in American Association history on September 11, 1882, against the Cincinnati Reds.
His nickname "The Apollo of the Box" came from his handsome good looks. He was reputed to be quite the ladies' man.
Over his 13-year pro career, Mullane went 284-220 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.237 WHIP. He ranks 29th all time in wins, 10th in complete games (468), 24th in innings (4,531.1), and 65th among pitchers in bWAR (60.0). He holds the record in most wild pitches (343), followed by Nolan Ryan (277)... who pitched 855 more innings (and 14 more seasons).
He is the all-time leader in most bWAR by an Irish-born player with 65.67 (60.0 as a pitcher, 5.67 as a batter), just beating out fellow dead-ball era player Tommy Bond (60.86 bWAR -- 61.0 as a pitcher but -0.1 as a batter). The last Irish-born player in the majors was Joe Cleary, who played in one game with the Washington Senators in 1945 -- giving up seven runs while only recording one out. (But the one out was a strikeout!)
I was curious to see who was the best player born on each day of the year. It turned out to be a bit more of a struggle than I thought it was going to be, so I decided to simply sort it by WAR. Does that mean that sometimes a better player got left off the list for a player who simply had a longer career? Absolutely. But WAR is a nice simple stat. So, here's the list!

The more I've thought about it the more I've realized that the HOF should be about a third bigger. Most baseball writers and this reddit want a smaller hall. I originally agreed but the problem is that the Hall isn't a small hall and theres no way to remove people who got in. A good 40% of HOF inductees are not the elite of the elite of the game. So the difference between the hundred or so very good players who are in the Hall and the hundred or so very good players outside it is mostly just inconsistency. I'm not just talking about the truly terrible picks either. The Jesse Haines, High Pockets Kelly, and Rick Farrells of the world are worse than probably 200-300 players outside the hall. I'm talking about a lot of the picks. For every Derek Jeter, Roy Halladay, and Willie Mays in the hall there is a Harold Baines a Jimmy Collins or a Lefty Gomez.
I decided to look at the Hall of Fame for pitchers all the way back to the beginning and find how many pitchers are about as good as the lower third of HOF pitchers if we remove the really bad outliers?
In order of priority things I looked at were career bWAR, career ERA+, number of 4 and 5+ bWAR seasons, difference between ERA and FIP, number of 110 and 120 ERA+ seasons, SO/W ratio, batting, SO, post-season pitching.
I'll admit to a pretty strong preference for a pitcher being able to say he was one of the top 10 pitchers in the league for the peak of his career over a guy who was just above average for a long time. I don't think every single one of these pitchers necessarily deserves a spot in the HOF but given the standards as they exist, not as the BBWA wishes they were, I would vote for most of them.
I also feel pretty strongly no PED users/no black sox in the Hall. It sends a good message to prevent problems like that occurring in the future even if we can debate the fairness of letting a guy like Bud Selig in and not Barry Bonds.
Bold are for guys who were robbed of the HOF in that I think they're pretty close to the median HOFer and should make it in even if the hall were a small hall
Italics are for guys I think clearly meet the standards and are solidly better than the bottom 20% of the hall
Normal is for guys who make the standard but would be pretty indistinguishable from the bottom of the hall

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Some days you donβt want all the noise. Maybe youβre going through something. Maybe youβre in a self-reflective kind of mood. Hell, maybe youβre just panicking and trying to DJ acceptable background music for your parents.
The point is, sad music has its place. Cleaner guitar tones can soothe the soul, and mournful lyrics can honestly help you through some shit.
Just look at ...Like Clockwork, which is essentially depression put to tape. Speaking of that, Radiohead also exists.
Today weβre going to take a look at a man known for his melancholy sound. An incredibly talented artist who had more than his fair share of troubles in life. Buckle in, itβs time for some somber strumminβ.
Yep. Todayβs artist is none other than ELLIOTT SMITH
About them
If you are looking for a happy story, boy did you come to the wrong place. But if you want to hear about a great musician who Josh Homme holds in high esteem, then you should grab a beverage and settle in. It is time for you to learn about Elliott Smith. I guarantee that if you listen to this tale, and to his music, you will thank me...even if our protagonist has been dead for 18 years.
Yup. This story is over before it begins.
Letβs go back to the beginning anyway. Steven Paul Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1969. He was the firstborn of one Gary Smith, a student in Medical School, and Bunny Kay Berryman, an elementary music teacher. This marriage was flawless, and he grew up happy in the great state of Nebraska. Because we know that musicians who write sad songs had happy upbringings.
His parents divorced when he was 6 months old and Smith moved with his mother to the cozy city of Duncanville, Texas. He went on to have a phenomenal relationship with stepdad Charlie Welch. Because, you know, there is no trope out there about the evil step parent.
So shocker: Smith en

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Starting in 2017 I've tracked the voters and votes for the NBA MVP award in real time as an annual hobby. NBA media members make their votes public and I track them in a public spreadsheet of all the NBA Awards in an attempt to determine the MVP and other winners before the NBA Awards Show (is there one this year?).
My claim to fame is I determined Russell Westbrook's 2017 MVP victory over James Harden in the most hotly contested MVP race of the last five years. Now I track the award results on Reddit for fun. So here we go again.
This year we'll start tracking the NBA MVP award by trying to predict who the voters for the 2021 NBA MVP voters are going to be.
The NBA doesn't publicly disclose who the voting pool is until they release the All-NBA Teams during the playoffs. They presumably release the All-NBA teams during the playoffs, not at the NBA Awards Show, because of the contact implications and the need for teams who did not make the playoffs or were eliminated to plan for the offseason.
So here we go... Let's try to predict who the NBA MVP voters will be so the Denver Nuggets front office can address their care packages.
The first piece of this puzzle. Who gets to vote this year?
Since 2017 the NBA Awards have been voted on by a pool of one hundred media voters and an aggregated fan vote for eligible awards.
The best predictor for who votes for the MVP and end of year awards is who gets to vote for the NBA All-Star starters. Since 2017 the NBA gave the media a roll as voters in the All-Star starter action. Since then over 90% of those voters have then been NBA Awards voters:
While we can expect this trend to continue it's difficult to say who gets switched in and out between All-Star voting and end of the year voting. There's little discernable pattern to who gets added and dropped.
It may be the NBA intentionally changes out voters to keep it spicy. It may be that establish
