James woke to the sound of a bell chiming besides him, and rubbed his eyes. Two o'clock... urgh, Nat had just put the twins back to sleep (again) an hour ago, and now this?

"Honey?"

"Yep, hang on." James reached over and turned off the alarm, then listened carefully. Sure enough, unhappy sounds began to emanate from one of the cribs. "Oh hell. I know what that tone was." He flicked on the bedside lamp and threw off the quilt. "It's linked to the Excalibur's long-range sensors," he explained. "Means something's entered the system."

Natalya scooped up the twins and smiled down at them. "There there, we're just going to go and see what the fuss is about. You'll get to see daddy's new spaceship too."

James led the way into the cellar, and then down a long, featureless corridor that sloped gently down as it left the house behind. After a minute of walking, Natalya shook her head and levitated herself off the floor, picking up speed as she passed by her husband. James did the same, and a few moments later they arrived at a set of thick, polished steel doors. They swung open as the four humans approached, and Natalya got her second look at the Excalibur.

In keeping with the source material for the Artemis, the Excalibur was a giant of a ship, ten thousand feet long and fifteen hundred in diameter, its hull a sparkling, transparent purple material, its ends tapering to needle-pointed prow and stern. No obvious engines were visible, though the entire hull was liberally covered in squat, snub-nosed ball turrets.

"I really should've copied the sensors and put them in the house somewhere," grumbled James as an airlock swung open silently and he raced down the corridor. The interior of the ship had been lined with polished white plastic and metal, as he'd reluctantly been forced to agree with Natalya that the sparkling purple walls were just too distracting and confusing.

The little family arrived in the control room, and James wasted no time in bringing up a schematic of the system on one of the larger monitors. "Damn, that's a lot of ship," he said out loud as his eyes scanned the readouts. "About two hundred point sources - that we can see, I might add - and estimated tonnage..." he whistled as he took in the figure. "We're gonna need a bigger boat."

James and Natalya hold a council of war, whilst unbeknownst to them, Shintarno's hunters are catching up...

"Aah - pbbbbbbt!"

Thomas squealed in pleasure as his father blew another raspberry on his tummy, his chubby Winston Churchill face beaming away and his eyes bright with joy as he gurgled and giggled away.

"Well, that's about the long and the short of it," James said, sitting his son up. "They long ago conquered or exterminated everyone else in the galaxy, so I don't think we can count on finding any allies. The trouble is that now that they can enter this Null Zone around Earth they can come for us whenever they want. They have enough of a technological edge to beat us even without all their psychic stuff, and frankly after what the two of us did they may just decide that lobbing a few asteroids in Earth's direction would be a good idea."

"So what's your plan? We can't go back - not easily, anyway."

"Well, if I thought I could make a jump drive that worked in the Null Zone I would, but it's new stuff, even for these guys. But we'd be missing our biggest advantage in this."

"Our own powers."

"Exactly. We're up there, Nat. I don't know what our limits are yet - I plan to do a lot of experimenting once I'm certain we're being left alone - but the fact is that there's only two of us, and we can't leave these two rascals unattended for long." He paused to rub his nose with Thomas's. "That ties us down no end."

"I understand," Natalya said. She did too - not just what James had said, but of the unstated fact that, interstellar war or no, the chance that he would leave her to raise the children was exactly zero. "But if we can't get to Earth, and there's nobody else out here, well I think even we might struggle to take down a galactic empire."

"True. However, I think we have two - no, three - advantages. First, this empire is run along feudal lines - bad ones. Everyone is at each other's throats, eager to seize any advantage and screw a rival over. People preferred to ally with a greater long-term threat to deal with more immediate threats at home in the past - look at the American Indian tribes, or the Indian rulers when the British arrived - and I'd be shocked if we can't play them off against one another the same way." He looked at her to make sure she understood, and she gave a nod. "Second, there must be some rebellious sentiments amongst civilians. #Special Operations submarines and their future within the Royal Australian Navy.

The RAN, and by extension the PIUSF, are faced with the need to patrol 37 million kilometre square of territory. Patrolling such a vast area is an incredibly complex task as even radar stations are unable to allow for the entire area to be monitored effectively. With current systems at the edge of capacity to just monitor known civil contacts, even an incredibly noisy narco sub could easily penetrate the defences of the PIU and engage in wanton destruction. Accordingly we need to develop special purpose assets that will allow for us to conduct covert operations in relative secrecy. Working off the hulls slated for delivery in 2027, we will be designing a total modification package to the submarine to allow for their use as our special operations submarines. Following the Order of the submarines we will launch our monitoring system program to allow us to cloak the program in cost overruns for this program

###Tangaroa Class Special Operations Submarine

Working off of the Ohio class hull form we will be conducted a major modification on the design to allow for it to transition from a SSBN into a Special Operations Submarine. The first modification(duh) will be the removal of the ballistic missile launching section and its replacement with a hull. Additional modifications will be conducted through the addition of additional thrusters to allow for the vessel to remain stationary within the water column on all axis, modification of the lower end of the former SLBM section to allow for the fitting of a regressed mounting for our midget submarines, Escape capsule mounted on the top, storage mountings on top for the carrying of payloads, expanded undersea communication array to allow for communication with undersea assets, 10m hull insert to allow for the storage of a dual UUV bay and hanger system.

These modifications will allow for the submarine to perform its tasks effectively and with minimal complications. Unfortunately these modifications due to their substantial nature will increase the cost of the vessels in the class and result in the vessels arriving into service later than planned. Despite this, the increase in operational flexibility and strategic secercy afforded by a covert nearly undetectable method of deploying assets onto the seafloor means that in the eyes of the government the investment is warranted.

Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.

The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:

I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).

His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.
