Tom Stoppard is perhaps the world’s leading, funniest and cleverest playwright. Ever since he hit the ground running in the 1960s with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, there has always been a streak of melancholy beneath the sparkling surface of his work. Now with his latest play, Leopoldstadt, he comes full circle and faces up to the pain and loss in his past. In this programme, he tells Alan Yentob his extraordinary story.

Lacan on Tom Stoppard's 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead'

While going through the transcript of a 1975 talk in London I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Lacan met and was an admirer of Tom Stoppard, even calling Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead "one of the most Lacanian texts I have ever seen."

>[W]hile I was preparing my presentation this time, I read Rosencrantz and Guildenstern by Tom Stoppard (whom I met and who promised me he would come; perhaps he is there among you). It is one of the most Lacanian texts I have ever seen, even if it affected me, even if it made me a little sick (Lacan becomes hoarse). Because I realized that in a story, mad as a psychoanalytic discourse, you are made to enter another world. (I had read it earlier; I was also occupied with Hamlet, as one must be when one is interested in Freud).
>
>It is enough to put Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in question –– in natural question –– to grasp that we are in the psychoanalytic world. For there is no opposition between nature and culture. Nature is an idea from culture; it is enough to put what we perceive in question to see that this has nothing to do with the real, these are designations from words, and this is what constitutes the thing, the thing that makes the world go round.

I was wondering what to make of Lacan's comment in the second paragraph. Any ideas? :-)

My record collection displayed in a pointless wannabe-artistic style completely unimportant because I wanted to ask a question. Is Tom Stoppard's Darkside any good? I've never listened to it.

If I like absurdist plays like Tom Stoppard's, "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead," what other plays would I like that have come out recently?

I'm huge into Samuel Beckett and absurdism and will take other suggestions from the time period. I just want to find some more contemporary stuff as well. Thanks!

Looking to watch a good, non-high school performance of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard online, however, I can not seem to find a professional performance anywhere online, if anyone knows where I could find a good performance online, it would be greatly appreciated. (Obviously will pay to watch if needed)

Says it all in the title.
