According to an article by the BBC there were a total of 372 mass shootings in the United States in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870. There were 64 school shootings in 2015 as well. A US male between the ages 15-24 is 70 times more likely to be killed with a gun than any of their counter parts in the G-8, in 2010 the United States had a homicide rate that is 7 times higher than the average per capita rate in the OECD. Now the issue of gun control is a hot button topic between the differing views of the interpretation of the constitution because both sides will look to the commerce clause within the constitution. This clause gives the federal government the right to regulate interstate commerce, but maintains the states right to regulate commerce within its borders. And in the wake of media coverage of mass shootings we do see states taking their contested right to gun regulation and putting gun control measures in states.
So to start off we do see a measurable decrease in suicide rates in states that implement a mandatory waiting period, as well as other gun control measures such as mandatory back ground checks, restricted open carry, and gun lock requirements.
