He's the second dog we've lost, after all these years we've spent with them. The first was last April.
Thing is, both he and the one who passed last year are the younger ones. Our last dog is the oldest, and he's coming up on 14 next March. The ones that passed were both only 12.
I feel bad for this one though, because I wasn't at my home when it happened. I'm away for school. I'd visited on Monday and stayed the night, but two days after I left I got the news. He had died in my mom's arms.
He was a really nice dog, but I'm sad to say that in my younger years I wasn't really very good to him. I always got pretty cross with him and he deserved better from me. He had such a big heart overflowing with love.
My sister and I buried him next to our other one.
When I visited on Monday I knew his time was ticking. I apologized to him for all my harsh words that I never truly meant. I just feel guilty for ever being mean to him at all. He's had his fights with the other two over food but what can you do? That's just what dogs do. Natural instinct isn't something to be so angry about.
I miss him. It's only been a week.

Tuesday evening after work I drove down to my mom/stepdadβs house a couple of hours away to drive him to radiation treatment and also take their car to the shop to be serviced Wednesday morning. It is 12:55am on Thursday and my dog (who adores my stepdad) keeps waking up, running to the living room, and hopping in stepdadβs favorite chair. Itβs freaking me out because stepdad said he wasnβt feeling well earlier and went to bed. Iβm worried something is wrong with him and that the dog is sensing it somehow. My parents sleep with the bedroom door shut so I canβt go peek in to check on him. Itβs very unsettling and I just wanted to tell someone. Ugh.
Edited to add: my mom takes Ambien and would have no idea if stepdad was in distress.
Update: he seems to be okay this morning but noted he didnβt feel well or sleep well last night. Just glad heβs ok!

A middle-aged woman today who checked in last night came into the front desk this afternoon requesting to switch one of her two booked rooms with us. After stepping up the curb to get to the guest services, her walker chair rolls off the curb and the items stored in her chair seat fall out. A woman in her party accompanying her and I helped gather her things and get her walker chair in sorts and my co-worker βMβ held the door open for her.
Even with her mask on you can tell she is smiling. She lightheartedly blames the mishap on her not putting the brakes on her chair, even though it was actually the wind that pushed it off the curb. She joins us in guest services/front desk.
Today it is slow, so my manager βEβ joins us in the front to friendly greet the woman and engage in conversation. She explains that she came with her son, who has the second booked room, and her service dog (who is an adorable husky). She explains to us that she is loving her stay, but wants to get a room with more space for her service dog. She feels that her pup doesnβt have enough room and would be happier with more space.
She has terminal cancer with mere months left to live but prefaces this news with βI donβt want any sympathy, just giving some context...β and she giggled, and I thought it was funny. She has been staying here at [Local Beach Town Inn & Suites] for 25 yearsβthis year, her son (who is 27 years old) asked her if it was worth the money for the trip this year, and she insisted that she βwasnβt about to stop now.β
Our inn with just over 40 rooms has over 10 different room types, so we spend about ten minutes reviewing a couple of the suites with a good outdoor space for her pup to move into. She is so concerned with bothering other people with the presence of her well-behaved and certified service dog that she doesnβt want any of the ocean view rooms due to the balcony and outdoor spaces being shared. So, she decides on the most expensive suite (these suites are in a set of six suites in a beach house close by but not a part of all other rooms in the inn) despite our weekend rates kicking in and her remaining two nights going for around $599 a night for the suite she choseβand with a giggle, she insists four times throughout the payment authorization that she doesnβt want to hear the stay total or the difference in room price in comparison to her orig
