How Effective was Vietnam during the Third Indochina War?

To what degree did decisions made by individual commanders impact the course of events?

How did the varying doctrines stand up against eachother?

If y'all know any good books on the subject, please recommend. Thanks!

[Socialists] In your eyes, who were the least evil in the Third Indochina War?

Summary from Wikipedia:

>The Third Indochina War was a series of interconnected armed conflicts, mainly among the various communist factions over strategic influence in Indochina after Communist victory in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in 1975. The conflict primarily started due to continued raids and incursions by the Khmer Rouge into Vietnamese territory that they sought to retake. These incursions would result in the Cambodian–Vietnamese War in which the newly unified Vietnam overthrew the Pol Pot regime and the Khmer Rouge, in turn ending the Cambodian genocide. Vietnam had installed a government led by many opponents of Pol Pot, including former Khmer Rouge most notably Hun Sen. This led to Vietnam's occupation of Cambodia for over a decade. The Vietnamese push to completely destroy the Khmer Rouge led to them conducting border raids in Thailand who had provided sanctuary. China strongly objected to the invasion of Cambodia. Chinese armed forces launched a punitive operation in Sino-Vietnamese War February 1979 and attacked Vietnam's northern provinces, determined to contain Soviet/Vietnamese influence and prevent territorial gains in the region.

Who was the least evil? Any articles that do a Marxist analysis of these events?

I would once against like to draw people's attention to Veronza Bowers Jr., especially people from the USA: http://veronza.org/

What was the extent of Soviet influence in the tactics and doctrine of the NVA during the Vietnam War and later the Third Indochina War?

One of the criticism that is often leveled against the Americans is that they molded the South Vietnamese Military in their own image, which was not exactly a good idea since South Vietnam couldn't sustain similar level of military expenditure since it wasn't an industrial and economic superpower like US, which lead into further dependency towards US aid.

That criticism lead me to wonder to what extent did the Soviet military influence how the North Vietnamese military organized itself and fought the war, especially as it starts to switch from fighting a guerilla war into a conventional one with armor and artillery after the Americans left.

About the Third Indochina War

Why did the war happen ? The Vietnamese had just done the bloody Vietnam War. They economy almost collapsed, and there were like millions of problems. Why did they join a fight like that for sure China would attack them ? And after many years now the Vietnamese don't have any involvements in Cambodia. So what was the point ? And the China-Vietnam conflict ? What was the result ? Who was the winner ? Maybe the Vietnamese, because they were isolated by the surrounding countries ?

[Communists] What can we learn from the Third Indochina War?

So, as I understand. The First Indochina War was against the French Empire (to hell with francafrique, while you're at it) and the Second Indochina War was the famous one with the USA.

However, TIL about the Third Indochina War, described by Wikipedia as a conflict between communist factions in Southeast Asia from 1975 to 1991. Some notable events include:

  • Removal of the Khmer Rouge from power
  • End of the Cambodian genocide
  • Pro-Vietnamese government installed in Cambodia
  • China withdraws from Vietnam after 27 days of fighting
  • Communist Party of Thailand abandons armed struggle
  • Vietnam withdraws from Cambodia in 1991
  • 1990 Chengdu summit leads to the normalization of relations between China and Vietnam
  • Restoration of the House of Norodom
  • Ongoing insurgency in Laos

What can we learn from this event?

Questions about Vietnam's War Against the Khemer Rouge (Third Indochina War)

I am seeking references in French, any Asian language, any European language, or English (unlikely to have been published) that covers Vietnams's war against the Khemer Rouge regime in Cambodia during the 70's and 80's. I consider the Sino-Vietnamese war of 1979 to part of this conflict. I am looking for a history that focuses on the military operations of all actors, to include border clashes between Vietnam and Thailand over Khemer Rouge sanctuaries in east Thailand. Did these land clashes result in aerial clashes between Thailand and Vietnam? Did any of these clashes potentially lead to outside covert intervention against Vietnam by China or the US?

I find it amazing that Thailand would support a communist movement in another country during the 1980's while it faced its own indigenous communist movement in its own country during the same period. Is there evidence of communication between Thai communists with Khemer Rouge elements in Thailand? Did the Khemer Rouge wither away simply because "the Cold War ended" and they were on their own, or because it was Thailand that pulled the plug? If so, why did they pull the plug? How many Khemer Rouge war criminals are hiding in Thailand? Did they re-implement some of their genocidal policies inside Cambodia within areas they controlled while fighting Vietnam?

Historiography Help (Cambodian-Vietnam War/Third Indochina War)

Hi, I was wondering whether anyone might have some good sources in mind pertaining to the precipitants leading up to the Third Indochina War (Pol Pot's war on Vietnam). Since Cambodia is still a very murky subject and tends to be overshadowed by the Vietnam War, I'm having a difficult time finding solid sources outside of Chandler, Kiernan, and the Phnom Penh Post. Any help offered would be most appreciated!
