Squirrels keep cannon balling & drowning in my horses' water troughs. :( Help me rig the tanks!
I have two 100 gallon metal stock tanks for my herd animals. There is a group of squirrels that live nearby that come clean up grain scraps the animals drop on the ground.
Recently, the squirrels have started cannon-balling off the fence and tree above the tanks and into the water, for some reason. They obviously can't get back out if the water isn't at the brim. I have rescued them 3-4 times and have found two dead unfortunately from drowning. It also sucks because I have to bail out 80-90gal of water by bucket and bleach the tank, plus bury the squirrel to prevent vultures.
I tried leaving an old shovel handle in the trough but my donkey played with it and carried it off across the pasture.
Any ideas on how to rig the trough so the squirrels can get out?
Two of the horses are mischievous, so nothing they could potentially hurt themselves with. It also needs to be able to be washed/sanitized.
I need ideas. Thanks!

A large Napoleonic battle happens in a field by an important river. Men are buried, but what happens to the hundreds of dead horses? They're pretty hard to bury, but leaving them to rot hampers work in the fields and threatens to contaminate the water. Would armies bother to do something?
Or would they abandon populations to deal with the likely public health crisis they've just created? How would the locals even approach the situation?
A previous answer about horses injured in traffic accidents cites an article which says:
>Dead horses were extremely unwieldy, and although special horse removal vehicles were employed, the technology of the era could not easily move such a burden. As a result, street cleaners often waited for the corpses to putrefy so they could more easily be sawed into pieces and carted off.
I think the article concerns a later period; I doubt Napoleonic armies had "special horse removal vehicles". And by the time they putrefied, important agricultural work may have been missed and the water supply of cities may have been poisoned.
Was burial enough to prevent water contamination or did they have to be moved away from the rivers? What were the logistics of trying to bury/move that amount of large animals?

TIL In 1800 while traveling in S America, Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist, wanted to collect electric eels for study. His strategy was unorthodox. Local fishermen drove some 30 horses and mules into a pool of eels, which allegedly reared out of the water and attacked, killing two horses.
