Ladies and gentlemen, my (Reddit) name is i_MiLK. I am proud to present to you all an analysis of the REIGNING, UNDISPUTED, CHAMPION OF THE ESPN EVENTS INVITATIONAL: THE. DAYTON. FLYERS.
In truth, this was actually going to be a post on Iona's win vs Alabama, but then the next day the Dayton Flyers pulled out a stunner of an upset over the AP top 5 Kansas Jayhawks en route to their championship in Orlando. Fitting that the last-second heroics of Mustapha Amzil sent students/alumni/fans etc. of the Catholic Marianist school into rapture, eh? These extraordinary upsets don't just occur out of nowhere however, so I'm going to go over a couple key points in the second half to show you all just how this upset happened. I will be splitting this section into 2 main parts: The start of the 2nd half where Dayton came back from a 10 point deficit at the break, and the late stages of the 2nd half during crunch time. As has been the norm with my previous posts, I will be going over offense rather than defense. I'll do one of these on someone's defense................................................................eventually.
COMEBACK
Transition baskets: 17:36 16:15
One of the first things you need in cooking up an upset is an easy way to score buckets. Kansas' transition defense was really lacking, they lacked focus and urgency in getting back and matching up. Both transitions baskets I've shown are a result of poor communication. Christian Braun gets caught cheating on the first one in trying to pressure Malachi Smith despite the fact that Remy Martin is in decent position to stop the ball. Ochai Agbaji is left with an impossible 2-on-1 as he's forced to take the cutter and leave Elijah Weaver for an open catch-n-shoot 3 that he splashes. The next one is another open Weaver 3, as Dajuan Harris inexplicably peels off of the sweet shooting southpaw to pick up Smith despite the fact that Braun is already there. E-dub gets to step into a shootaround 3 and the game is tied.
Kansas also matched UD size-for-size in the 2nd half after starting the game small with 4 guards/wings in the first half. Coach Bill Self went with the 6'8 combo forward Jalen Wilson at the 4 t
... keep reading on reddit β‘The cowards on the CFP committee and the AP and coaches poll need to know that we, the people, demand that the Kansas Jayhawks get ranked in the upcoming polls! The Jayhawks might not have the best record compared to a lot of other teams, but they beat Texas and we, as a nation, needed this to happen. We're in dark times, and when a group of young men work as hard as those Jayhawk football players did to give us all one big, collective ROFLcopter, they deserve recognition.
The cupcake games are over with... or are they? This week Baylor takes to the road to visit the Kansas Jayhawks, who are still recovering from a 49-22 thrashing by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. They may have a bit of a chip on their shoulder after that defeat, however. And who better to take it out on than fellow historical Big 12 cellar dweller Baylor? With this in mind, I ask you:
