This last week, I had the pleasure of binging Paul Simonβs uber-acclaimed work Graceland. I went in with practically no expectations other than βI expect this to be pretty good.β Wellβ¦ my expectations were completely blown out of the water, because Graceland is definitely one of the greatest albums Iβve ever heard. For those of you who havenβt heard the album or know relatively little about it, let me give you some background:
After Paul Simonβs stint as half of the singer-folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Simon went on to carve himself an incredibly respectable solo career. Graceland is a 1986 album by the singer-songwriter β his seventh. The album houses a plethora of musical roots, including pop, folk, rock, and zydeco South African music. The album is littered with African instruments, artists, and vocal styles, ultimately producing an incredibly rhythmic, unifying type of sound, while simultaneously maintaining a folk rock aesthetic. The lyricism and story-telling presented on Graceland are absolutely grand.
Paul Simon has a knack for creating sublime, aesthetically pleasing lyrical phrases that fit perfectly within the contexts of the unique stories he creates. Although of a definitively different, more melodic style, Paul Simonβs folk writing chops are comparable to Bob Dylanβs in their ingenuity and ability to capture and lure the listener into the world of the overarching story. Upon listening to Graceland for the first time, I was surprised by how similar some of the songs were to current critical darling Vampire Weekend. Iβd go so far to say that Vampire Weekend owes a huge deal to Graceland and Simon for their sound. Like honestly, the first time I heard βDiamonds on the Soles of her Shoesβ I had to double check and make sure that I wasnβt listening to Vampire Weekend.
Although Simonβs Graceland marked another of many Western/African crossover albums during the 80s, Simonβs may be the most enduring. Although the album is a definitively 80s work, it never falls into the tiring excesses and over the top production techniques that stylized a lot of rock of the day. The album is filled to the brim with jangling guitars, South African chants, driving rhythms, and Simonβs winding, engrossing lyricism. Below, Iβve posted a variety of links from the album:
Gumboots β definitely one of my favorites from the album. The accordionβ¦
